Wow! I'm pretty sure that was an Elk! Awesome rack on that guy!!! My son and I hiked around the canyon last fall (Nov 2009), and we saw elk, mule deer, bighorn sheep, coyote, condors - the place is loaded with wildlife. A ranger told us there were mountain lions around, but very few people ever see them.
@planot171 Wow, I didn't realize they got that big. One of the funnier things I saw on my GC trip last Thanksgiving - wish I had gotten a pic of it - was mule deer eating the feed inside the mule corral near the backcountry office. Then later int he trip I saw the same thing down by the NPS corral at Phantom Ranch.
