Actually when the series started, the possibilities were endless, so the storylines veered a lot. Some were good, some, not so much. In the furst few seasons they introduced the four ancient races concept, but by the time the nox, asguard and acients were laid out, the show got bigger and other stoylines took precedence. I loved how the 200th episode payed tribbute to the series origins, even though continuity ended around the fifth season.
You also have to take in to account that when Silverman left, he had copyright on his ideas and concepts. BW and TPTB on the show didn't want to pay royalties so certain Silverman generated story lines were dropped or ignored.
