Thank you for posting this video!! It inspired me to make my own. I wasn't very lucky making one this size. So I down sized the whole thing. I used an aluminum rod that fit in my drill so I could cut the notch evenly and it worked great. Total cost was around $5.
Again thanks for posting this. Check out my video of the small piston.
Very cool. I do have one comment about the spray paint. Spray paint is highly flammable I would be careful with using spray paint if you get some on the very end, it might ignite.
@zj79000 Dried paint isn't a concern. Everything will burn....but its the vapors from the aerosol (or base that the pigment is dissolved into). once its dry, its not an issue. Try lighting dried gasoline on fire, nothings gonna happen.
@longtall2010. Hardwood has tighter grain and therefor easier to make air tight using some kind of sealant. the O' ring is from lowe's plumbing section #83 Danco
Thanks for the video! I followed your instructions and made a piston that works far better than the second generation POS that my brother bought on Ebay. Good information and great presentation.
KAU what?? Auto spell checkers suck it was UK before the iPod changed for me! Anyway you got some good knowledge passing skills there sir, I thank you for sharing
Excellent teaching method I will be trying this one, might come close to beating my old magnesium strip! And I'm an ex military manuKAU who won't waste time on fools errands. But this looks sweet!
I tried polyurathene and it worked for a while but then started loosing comprestion now I am trying crazy glue !!! i did not realize you only had to seal the end I put poly on every square inch of the plunger !!!! Will see how crazy glue works . Hope for the best !!!!!!!!!
@hattyuk thanks for your comments. In answer to your question. I have sold a couple of pistons here in the states, however, I know nothing about shipping overseas. my main objective is to teach you how to do it yourself.
Jeez I've been tryin to make one for a few days now and holy hell it isn't as easy as you make it seem haha I've gone through about 9ft worth of hardwood dowels and I'd say 12 o rings
@Koldazsno I'd say you are doing something wrong! there is only one thing that will keep this from working and that is air leakage. either your dowel rod is not sealed or the fit of the o'ring is too loose. if after applying vasoline the piston does not have any bounce to it when compressed quickly you have a leakage problem.
@buckshot752 I just got it to work!!! but it figures i finally get the technique down and my piston broke, nothin un-fixable but still a pain. it seems as though you NEED to use vasaline cuz i tried everything else and it wouldnt work. Also i put a nice finish on it with provincial pine minwax and got it all sealed up with birchwood casey gun stock oil and stock wax, and ill tel ya it made one hell of a tight seal. thanks for the video it was very helpful!!!
@Koldazsno way to go I never thought of using gun stock oil but I guess if it seals the wood that good now go and enjoy your new toy and amaze your friends oh by the way it is still a viable option for starting fires in the wild if you can use flint and steel you can use a fire piston
@791bigdaddy 1/2" oak dowel rod, 1/2" O'ring from Danco #83, 1/2" stubout cut to 4.5-5.0". wooden drawer knob, krazy clue or clear coat sealant. knife and small file.
I enjoyed your video! I would like to try to make one. Even if not for survival it would be great to show friends who came to your house. Thanks a lot.
Buckshot, I watched your vid about 8 hours ago and I have made one already. Works every time!!! It is not as nice looking as yours but it works!!! Thanks again!
@cheekyfumes I am so glad you were Successful. Looks will come later. The important thing is that you made the effort. I hope you will become very adept at using it. Many people believe it is just a novalty item, since the fire steel and other fire producing gadgets came along. I believe it is another tool that anyone interested in bushcraft should become very familure with. Besides, you can have alot of fun with you friends with it. Good luck and thanks for watching my vids.
Hey Buckshot752 I made a fire piston using your instructions. I had a great time making it, but it's so hard to use. I have gotten it to work like 4 or 5 time out of like 100 lolol. It's air tight used tube but it so hard to plunge. what can i do short of buying one? Great vid by the way, ya sound like you should be doing commercials
@loverher sorry I didn't answer sooner I've been having some issues latley. I have made another fire Piston since, a little smaller and take alot less effort to plunge. I have found that there are a few folks that have trouble when it comes to plunging the piston all the way down with enough force to cause combustion. you have to use enough vasoline to make the plunger easy to slide with little friction. Given this, you then really have to hit the plunger hard and all the way down(no hesitation
Buckshot sent me a couple of his pistons.. and I want to commend him on his craftsmanship and functionability of the pistons. Incredible work Bro.. They work great! Thanks so much for your contribution to the bushcraft community!
@BushcraftOnFire Thank you for you comments and ratings. It is my pleasure to repay to the Bushcraft Community for all the knowledge I have gained from good folks like you.. I expressly would like to thank those of you who put this knowledge out there at no cost. I believe Living knowledge should be shared, otherwise we all suffer the lose.
I tell you what. That's about the niftiest thing I ever did see. Always did want myself one and now I can make it. Thank you ever so much!

@zj79000 there is no paint on the end of the plunger, just the knob.
buckshot752 7 months ago
@buckshot752 He's referring to the Krylon clear that you sealed the dowel with . Once that's dry there's nothing to really worry about .

@zj79000 spray paint is not really flamable. the PAINT FUMES are flamable. once it is dry and cured its not a safety concern

@PAsurvival Chuga, anything that will catch a spark and hold it. charcloth is by far the best.
