  • Anaar, Tempesta, love it although I don't know the meaning of this ritual I think that I could pick some information on the subconscious level. I'm a draconian priest and some of your movement are very similar to the ascended sacred serpent ritual that we practice. I'm going to learn belly dancing as my last step on our hierarchy. May the cycle of life and death protect you.

  • Among other things, Anaar actually IS a ritual dancer, as is Tempest. Real dance, real rites, real deal. No prob here!

  • This is very entrancing, well done and captivating.....I think all the hateful comments are just from the unenlightened and shouldn't be regarded as anything more than ignorance of our genre of dance. It is a ritualistic dance and let its beauty be in the eye of the beholder. I teach dance, I do rituals, and even if just for entertainment...I enjoyed.

  • wonderful performance - I enjoyed their original interpretation

  • shwoah. they really pulled me in on this dance, the story or ritual or whatever was captivating, i totally wanted to know what was in the bundle. a little heavy on the arm movements but it blew my mind at the end and how it fit into the song. very cool.

  • Stupid question... Which one of the dancers is which?

  • Anaar is in red, Tempest is in blue.

  • Thank you.

  • every movement has its own level of skill. moving your body doesn't mean dancing, means moving your body. Tempest is in my opinion an overstimated "body mover", she has great ideas, but she doesn't know how to make them look good.

  • Define "good".

  • good is defined, controlled, deep movements that impress, catch attention not only because they're sorrounded from impressive music and great costuming, that's not a fashion parade, it's a DANCE PERFORMANCE. You can put everything you want on yourself, say whatever on the meaning of the things you're doing, but quality of movements must remain always high, if you have high claims. she looks goofy most of the time. she has a good potential, i like her in the end. she's just not a good dancer.

  • So you're not really saying she's not a good dancer; you're saying that the definition of her dance is incomprehensible to you. You're also defining tribal dance (if you notice, this was tribal fest) must have "deep" movements in order to be "good". Finally, you're defining good dance in tribal style as not including costuming and music. Correct?

  • i'm just saying that a good dance is visible. something that if you meet that person doing that movements in the middle of a forest without music, is still interesting. even if that dancer wears very simple things (i love urban tribal for that). the rest is OF COURSE important, but not the thing on wich you have to found your dance on, because it's still of dance we're talking about. and of course tribal must have DEEP movements! correct, shaped, skilled movements!

  • Ah, I see your problem: you believe there is a single correctness in tribal. I recommend to your reading "In the Neolithic Age" by Rudyard Kipling, it will give you more insight into the basic nature of tribal. Since YouTube won't let me post a link, simply google the phrase

    in the neolithic age kipling

and you can find the poem easily.

  • there's not a correctness on "tribal" itself, cause she is on a stage, not in a temple. and anyway i was not talking about that.

  • Since rites in a temple *are* sacred theatre, I think you have a good deal of learning to do before you use words like tribal, temple, and "good" in general relation to dance.

  • Anyone know what the music is?

  • Waving your arms around a deer skull? Oh please. What d'you think it's gonna do, talk with an unearthly voice and predict that Morgaine Le Fay will be reborn?

  • Art? They wish. These two take themselves far too seriously. Come on girls, smile and lighten up; no need to think you're druids/holy women incarnate or performing ancient rituals

  • It's a performance with a mood and a story, staying in character is perfectly appropriate and enhances the dance. Of course they're going to act as if they're truly performing a ritual, it's a stage presentation, that's one of the main aspects.

I pity you and your closed mind.

  • Actually, it probably is a ritual. Anaar is known for her ritual dance. This is actually sacred art, and (while not a druid) Anaar is a holy woman, and last I checked, they both had bodies so I suppose that also makes them incarnate. If you want to see smiling, then pop in a Shirley Temple flick. If you expect to find it in all places you look, then don't bother with looking at art.

  • As a matter of fact, Anaar is a holy woman incarnate and the leader of a major Witchcraft tradition in the United States. And they're performing -modern- rituals, some of which draws from ancient rituals. One might as well point out that dancing has existed for thousands of years and therefore should no longer be performed because it is ancient.

"Et antiquum documentum / Novo cedat ritui", indeed.

  • Anaar is amazing <3

  • Sweet!!! :)

  • This is completely and utterly mesmorizing.

  • WOW!! Absolutely amazing...I love ritualistic dances, and I think its safe to say this one is such. I love how it wasn't just one woman either, and how they had like a dance off, totally awesome, I wish I could do a dance like this someday. All I can say is "WOW!" lol.

  • for me, it´s just dancing, but not belly dancing. btw, do you know the "magic fingers" from the movie "girls united" XD haha theirs remind me of that XD

  • And going over what you said. This particular show is billed as Gothic. I am referring when you go to a hafla where there are diffrent styles being represented and there is no explanation of what the diffrent style are. So I am not say one style is better than another. Just why not educate the public.

  • actually its gothic belly dance..a type of fusion..anything goes with a fusion..sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

  • obviously, this is not middle eastern belly dance. It is American Belly Dance. But it absolutely is belly dance. Just a different kind, which is cool. :)

  • "Obviously this is not middle eastern bellydance."

Bellydance IS middle eastern dance. I would say its an American version of Middle Eastern Dance.

  • Discovered this by clicking on a random link in a forum, and I love it! Very inspirational, very beautiful.

I like the music too. Can anyone tell me who the artist is?

  • The term belly dance is such a broad term. And yes dance does evolve. It is hard when it is someones culutre not to cringe a little when it seems so taken out of context. As much as you want to be creative. Just remember that for some of us it is part of a cultural heritage. My grandfather would have hated it. Personally I like it. I just wish there was a way to educate the public. That this type of bellydance does not represent the culture. That this is a creative outlet instead.

  • It is not billed as Turkish Belly Dance.

It is not billed as Romanian Belly Dance.

It is not billed as Arabic Belly Dance.

It is not billed as Persian Belly Dance.

It is simply billed as Belly Dance. And yes it is a broad term. And the Turkish interpretation differs from the Rom, which differs from the Arab, which differs from the Persian, none of which disrespect any other.

  • C'est vraiment plate

  • It was nice but I didn't really enjoy it as much as the other performances of tribe fest.

  • yes, much more of a ritual, but very beautiful and meaningful at the same time.

  • My goodness! Such hateful comments! The hidebound conservatism of much of the bellydance community never ceases to amaze and amuse me. It's like you want every dance to be exactly the same. Is there no room for creativity and originality in your world? Can't you enjoy this piece for what it is, instead of trying to project your insecurities upon it? This is a beautiful, meditative ritual dance (& of course it's bellydance!), and I thank and bless Tempest and Anaar for presenting it.

  • I think one problem is that some of the "bellydance community" wants to preserve what scraps there are of belly dance, and put it in a museum - rather than use it for its obvious design for a continual act of a new creation by each dancer.

  • Dance is interpertive. Someones culture, not really except by the person born to that culture. I love Gothic Bellydance. But I do get tired of people asking me is that how they dance in Egypt. You could argue that it is not the dancers responsibility to educate the public wheather thier dance represents the culture that this dance origanally came from.

  • Just tell them that it is a dance style from hundreds of cultures ranging from North Africa to southwestern Asia. Because it is. It may not even have "originated" in any one place, but rather simultaneously developed in many places. When you get really tired, just ask the person if they ever heard of Google. ;>

  • Tribes differ from each other in their mythologies, their syncretism, and their interpretations of the myths and syncretism. This is an interpretive presentation of one tribe's Weltanschauung. If all belly dance were the same, it could not be in any tribal gathering events, as it would be a herd activity rather than tribal.

  • It more of a Ritual I agree but still this IS belly dance

  • Belly Dance - like ALL dance - is ritual. When dance, like any ritual, does not evolve, it becomes a stagnant, meaningless form;

    "a tale

Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,

    Signifying nothing."

Anaar and Tempest's performance is a dance told by creative minds combining older and more modern ritual dance terms, signifying something to modern minds.

  • Yeah, Thanks for the reply

  • A lot of people were critical of this performance, but I thought it was gorgeous and dramatic myself. I'm not normally a Tempest fan, but she did beautifully here :)

  • Comment removed

  • well, they're not Wiccans, but they are Witches, if you read their websites. So it looks like they're using aspects of THEIR religion in their performance, not borrowing others willynilly.

  • I talked to Tempest I believe and she explained it to me. Now I've changed my mind knowing that.

  • I think I can understand where you were comeing from though Obabear2. :)

  • Top hides their stomach movement so costumes seem to be restricting them..

  • Yes 9 minutes of meditation with my eyes CLOSED. HAHA.

  • lol had to comment again

  • this is scarier than f*ck, but DEAR GOD I LOVE IT!!!!

  • I think some people must have computer issues (or personal ones), cause there's nothing choppy about this clip on my screen. I like to watch this clip when I am having a bad day - its soothing and VERY fluid. Almost like a 9 minute-long meditation. Thanks again for sharing this magic!

  • this message is for all yall haters, dissn there performance..Tempest is the gothic belly dance Queen..and U will, learn more proper manners before you comment, you barbarians..I am the Queen Lindsey Hadarah and whatever I say is word..and I say tempest is the best gothic belly dancer/artist I ever seen.... SO PISS OFF!

  • I'm glad that I live in a democracy and thus am entitled to my own opinion.

  • they lack fluidity so it doesnt really work

  • Wow, I really wish these two werent so choppy, I've seen them dance before and with their stage presence, costuming and music choices they could be good. They are just not good dancers IMO.

  • I agree with you. I think Tempest is very creative, I love their costuming, props, and the concepts behind their performances (in this case ritual dance) and they definitely have strong stage presence, but this dance is very stiff. I would like to see more fluidity and emphasis on hip, chest, and abdominal movements - this performance seemed topheavy and virtually all of the movement was in the arms.

  • Oh Tempest is superb

  • they look unsure in their moves and they look sad. belly dasncing isnt grim its a happy traditional thing look alive

  • I really enjoyed this performance...the costuming was great too! Never fear expression

  • love the music, but i'm still not quite sure what they're doing

  • When Anaar is involved, if you think you know what she's doing, you probably really don't.

The Tao which can be perceived is not the true Tao. ;>

  • Horrible, unappealing and unartistic.

  • wonderful and creepy

    love it

  • Lovely dance! Very different. I love the costuming too.

  • I love the spirit of this piece. Very spiritual and full of life and energy.

Anaar and Tempest are beautiful dancers.

  • lame little goth rats are not usually published authors.

  • screw you, your not dancing, so you dont know the creativity of their work, its art

  • you do not have to be a dancer to see that this is art. I do not dance (my wife does belly dancing), I can't dance, I prefer making music but Istill can see that this is real art. You do not have to be a good singer or musician to apreciate music for example.

  • Elle, dear, learn to read an entire thread before you make comments. If you were intelligent enough to do that, you'd see I was ridiculing nalini75's calling them "lame little goth rats". Anaar is, in fact, a published author, and I have been fortunate enough to take workshops with each of them. I do indeed know the creativity of Tempest quite well, both in dance and in ritual design.

Now go piss off, you idiot.

  • All the harsh comments, but the reality is this is an art form as with all dancing. Some is good, others is bad, but deviation from the norm is allowed. This I think is beautiful because its intention is to be ritualistic, and the dance and music conveys just that nicely. Sure it's not perfect, but thier interaction was strong and beautiful.

  • Yay!! Somebody who gets it.

  • i love other tempest performance, but this one is bored!!! they make only things with their hands, always the same...

  • No, you're a troll because you use ad hominems such as "Tempest is a horribly ugly woman" in supposedly critiquing an art performance.

  • While I respect your Arab culture and know that you know belly dance... understand this is a fusion, and it's okay to play with styles. No where does this claim to be "traditional belly dance". You show me where they claim that, and then you can speak... but even then, you have no business personally insulting them.

  • I really like the flow of this piece. :)

  • Good job...I've been corresponding with the singer, Sharynne, of The Moors. She really liked what you ladies did with this. Of course, the moment the video started, I recognized the location. It's a small world.

Hollywood Ballet will be dancing The Moors' song Guth Na Torrain...modern ballet with an Irish flavor.

The Moors have signed the deal to re-release the CD. Long overdue, I love her voice and the guitar.

  • Just because you may not like it, doesn't mean everyone else feels the same. You are welcome to voice your own opinions, but it would be nice if people could be a bit more tactful about it.

  • Love it! Looks largely improvised which is both a pro and a con, but I enjoyed the performance regardless. It is Transfixing.

  • thanks, it actually was entirely improv, just 2 dancers who know each other well and work by energy.

  • I agree this was not bellydance. But when I look at it as an art form unrelated to bellydance, I can like it. Btw if you find her ugly that's a matter of taste, but it has nothing to do with her dancing.

  • I met Tempest- seen her dance as well, I can say that she is a sweet, beautiful artist and person and CAN and DOES bellydance. As in really Bellydance - in her movements are the roots, the basis of what Bellydance is all about. She is an artist, respects the roots of the dance and where it comes from, but as an artist she has a right to express herself artistically in any way shape and form. I judge by your comment here that you are hateful and ugly, a real YouTube Ogre or Troll...

  • My Comment was directed at Ethnic Arts Promotions Troll down there...

  • What's the matter? Jealous much?

  • While I personally don't consider it *belly*dance - this is certainly a form of dance and thus a form of art and performance. If Duchamp's "Fountain" can be art, there is certainly no reason why this cannot be. Also, it's well within your right to express your opinions, but resorting to insulting Tempest as an "ugly woman" is just plain mean and not truly relevant to her skills as a dancer. I believe you were being called a troll for that insult, not simply for your opinion of their dance.

  • This is beautiful. It gives a very mystic feel to it

  • Does anyone know the name of the song they used? It's a wonderful piece.

  • It's a song by "The Moors" called "The Hunter". Supposed to be re-released in a near future (it's out of print for the moment)

  • I have no idea what they are thinking. How can you call this dance? Or even a performance?

  • the real question is, are YOU thinking? Both dance and performance are celebrations of life...and this piece looks to be exactly like that..maybe not YOUR life, but certainly theirs.

  • How do you define dance, Nimrodelelf? How do you define performance?

  • Very nice work! Nice use of the horned skull too. I can see why these dancers were inspired by the song, a very good fit for this sort of dance. Thanks for sharing (and crediting the band!) :)

  • fantastic, in all senses of that word.

  • I love tribal!!!and I love Tempest estetic and performances.

  • Very Nice floor work, love the theatrics.
