hm looks like ryan could've finished that heel hook if he cranked with more aggression but he probably knew cobrinha would have too much ego to tap and who wants to be known as the dick who broke cobrinha's leg? even if you get the win, the whole bjj community would hate on u...
@aomasakid Ryan wouldn't have finished the hook. Cobrinha and Mendes both have rubber feet. If you look at the toehold and heel hook exchanges from both during their ADCC match, their faces looked as chill as if they were doing warmup stretches, all in a situation that would send most people to surgery. Cant explain it. I do know that Cobrinha doesn't have an ACL in one of his knees. His supporting tendons are so strong that he is fine without it.
When this fight happened, Cobrinha hadn't been beaten in his weight class in years. An even better fight than this happened in the finals - against Rick Macauley. Cobrinha pulled out a miracle armbar in the final seconds when down on points.

ryan hall is good and everything but if he didnt play 50/50 guard every chance he got then he would be god awful. i have seen matches where he cant get the 50/50 guard and he got passed and dominated the whole time. his 50/50 guard is amazing but the rest of his game is only on a purple belt level which is still very good but the only reason he ever competes with a legit black belt is 50/50 guard...
@carlsongracieteam I guess you missed the first two matches at the Mundial this year where he submitted both opponents in a total of 4 minutes. And you missed Abu Dhabi in 2009. And the 2009 ADCC trials. And the 2008 Mundial. And the 2009 Mundial.

@carlsongracieteam Sooooo...what you're saying is that entering the 50/50 at some point and then taking someone down, passing the guard, and finishing from the back invalidates everything else they did? Brilliant.
@jeanetteflann what? i said ryan hall's 50/50 guard is amazing but the rest of his game is only on a purple/brown belt level lol? watch a match where he fails to get 50/50 guard he gets his guard passed he gets mounted and he gets subbed...
@carlsongracieteam Dude. You would have a hard time being more wrong. This is not "idolization," it's reality. I defy you to show me a single match from 2008 forward where that happens. This match was is over 2 years old and is against the best featherweight of the last decade. I'm not sure how losing to Cobrinha as a purple belt is somehow embarassing.
@onetwo1285 I never said it was embarasing i am not even saying ryan hall is bad your the one that is getting defensive i was just saying he is not on the same as level as some of the world class competitiors in his weight class. and if it werent for the 50/50 guard you wouldn't even know who ryan hall is. and that is something you cannot deny.
@carlsongracieteam Out of curiosity, where are these matches where he lost that way? I'm willing to bet there are a lot of black belts who would disagree with you.
@onetwo1285 lol just find a match where he fails to get the 50/50 guard. I know you probably idolize this guy but to be completely honest without the 50/50 he really isn't an extremely high level competitor, good yes but not on the same level as a guy like cobrinha. this match was a good example after cobrinha got out of the 50/50 guard he passed took his back, got the choke lol.
@carlsongracieteam Speaking of "lol," LOL at some random 20-year old nobody from youtube attempting to demean someone who is a mundial champion (at purple, 3rd at brown) and ADCC medalist.
@onetwo1285 I never claimed i could beat him and I am not a 20 year old nobody I am the youngest blue belt in the carlson gracie team in illinois. I am 16 and I have competed in many major tournaments like naga arnold, naga worlds, pan am's, and next year I am going to compete as an adult in the mundials in venice beach. But leave me out of this All i was saying is Ryan hall's overall game is just at a purple belt level the 50/50 guard is what allows him to win.
@carlsongracieteam Your age is listed as 20. So...a juvenile blue belt is now questioning the level of someone so far beyond himself (and likely everyone he trains with) that it's not even funny. All this in spite of mounds of evidence that show that he is completely incorrect. I love the internet. lol
@onetwo1285 my age is listed at 20 so i can watch all the videos on youtube because you have to be 18+ to watch some like bloody mma fights and stuff. so yes I just picked the year i was born 1990 even though i was born in 1994. and if you dont believe my bjj rank than we can talk de le riva guard, x-guard, turtle guard, s-mount, spider guard, modifed s-mount, boston crab, ezekiel's, quarter guard, butter fly guard anything. I will be at the international bjj open in chicago august 22nd.
@onetwo1285 so if you want to watch me compete or compete against me then i will see you there many of the best in the world will be there and i will be willing to compete in a absolute bracket so i can face you. or where ever you are located i can almost guranteed there are tournaments coming up around you and i would be more than happy to ride up and compete against you even if it at naga or something.
@onetwo1285 yeah i dont compete in the teen division either because there isnt a teen division in ibjjf. there is a juvenile 16/17 but i don't compete in that either once again good call.
@carlsongracieteam I just want to respectfully disagree with you. Ryan Hall has an elite black belt level game. I have watched some of his instructionals and he explains the mechanics behind the technique in a way that I have rarely seen from anyone. He understands leverage and mechanics that underly the technique. I used to think that Ryan's game was just crazy flexibility and the triangle, but after watching him a bit its very apparent that he has a lot more than that going for him.
@myfavxmanisgambit I agree with you, Ryan hall has a very good upside down guard, and open guard in general, and he is world class to a point, but watch him and marcelo roll, it's amazing that marcelo makes ryan tap so many times. but yes if ryan can make you play his game, and play into his 50/50, and upside down guards than he will most likely beat you.
@myfavxmanisgambit I know it is crazy, ryan can play around with normal black belts, and marcelo can play around with him. Ryan is still a few steps below the elite, but he will get their, he is still very young and getting better all the time.
Who do you think you are to disagree with the vast experience of a 16 yr old child who isn't capable of ascertaining whether or not someone of a much higher level than him possesses or not the skills that said 16 yr old can't comprehend.
at 2:30, look in the background,to the rihgt of center screen. guy in the red rashgurad and blue shorts got rejected big time! just thought it was funny:) replay if you agree
Cobrinha true master! Ryan Hall drives meet nuts, he is good but my biggest pet pev is when guys sit right of the start of a match and he does it every time
Cobrinha is a beast, I watch him roll 3 days a week, for about 3 hrs each of those days, and im still amazed at what he can do. Seems like every counter you put on him he has 10 counters to your counter. Simply amazing.
heel hooks really piss me off. I had my ACL torn really quickly and was out for 6 months from a heel hook and there wasnt even time to tap. Its the one move you can catcch a world champion with. It takes away from the technique because theres such a high risk of injury noone wants to take a chance
AGREED!!! i was out for a bit because of a heel hook too. only i had time to tap and was just to stupid to do so in time. wont make that mistake again though:)
hyan has good sub skills and that 50/50 position is his best shot but cobrinha is specialized on stopping that position since he has faced bruno frazatto in 3 finals already ...brunno and the mendes brothers are masters on the 50/50 position. the diference in their leves is clear...once cobra passes it doesnt take much for the sub...if they were in a gi tornament it would be even easier!
@xabovethisworldx no one disagrees. ryan always impresses. i think he surprised himself by catching up that inv heel hook. even more impressive is cob getting out of it... and that's why he's the man.
@xabovethisworldx I agree, I think Cobrinha got his blackbelt by then.....it only took him 6 years I think too, I got to talk to him a few months ago when i visited alliance, I mean hes a great guy, but I didnt like the attitude i got when i went...They wernt friendly at all
Ryan hall is a beast, but he had NOTHING for Cobrinha.
And heel hooks are by no means pussy, but when you have to dive for them like ryan did it shows you are outclassed and are grasping for any way to fin the match.
ryan hall is a beast but cobrinha is just so experienced. remember, this kid aint even black belt yet. ive watched alot of ryans vidoes on youtube. this kids the future.
Everyone uses them. You need to train more if you think that. Cobrinha uses them in the 2008 Grapplers Quest. Is he a coward? Is Royler and BJ Penn? Or do you just not like because you cannot understand them?
I'm suprised Cob even got involved with that 50/50 mess. Tricky. The one thing that seems to negate all the other skills and positions of jiu jitsu are the heel hooks and ankle locks. I've heel hooked some guys way better than me. They are just easier to go for than arms and chokes I think.
It's more that traditionally not a lot of time/effort is put into working leg locks in general because they were considered lower class techs back in the day and now it's wayyyy riskier to have a beginner train heel hooks/use them rolling than armbars/triangles etc. Some newer dudes are very quick to slap on dangerous heelhooks to more experienced guys and just crank because they don't understand, or they have it put on them and they roll the wrong way which is a huge huge risk.
It's not that surprising, seeing as the 50/50 is part of Cobrinha's game. He dominates his gi divisions with 50/50 sweeps.
Ankle locks? Right now I can think of only one ADCC level no-gi fight and no gi fight worth mentioning that has ended in an ankle lock, they aren't exactly effective at a high level. More of a backup plan.
its cause most ppl are decent enough not to go for breaks durring free rolling and tournaments, im sure if people actually went for the break they would win but ryan and ppllik him arent lik that, ryan would ahve won if he just went to break cors knee
I have to disagree. It was never close, he secured the position, not the submission, and as far as going for the break, I have seen Ryan destroying knees before, not to say with malicious intent mind you, but if he could have finished that he would have, and I don't think Cobrinha's victory could be credited to any holding back on Ryan's part. He simply got outplayed by someone on an entirely different level.
You also seem to think the "break" was threat of an ankle breaking there, he was attempting a heel hook, not an ankle lock, I have never seen Ryan attempt a straight ankle lock.
yea i wasnt dissing ryan, its his job to pursue the submission. "andrew 7913" said that ryan could have finished cobrinha if he had been trying to hurt him, i was simply saying that it hasnt stopped him before.
If you secure the leg properly there is no more of an effective lock than the ankle lock, the pain is immediate and the damage can last a lifetime......what on Gods green earth are you talking about!
Then again not many people win Mundial BB or ADCC so not to say Fowler isn't very good. He'd beat me without too much effort but I'm not talking about how great I am b/c I'm just pretty good lol. Rafael Lovato Jr. was only the second American outside of BJ Penn to win gold at Mundials. Moriarty will be the third.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
froggy good looking out man ryan i know 1000 people that have better bjj than ryan hall i do give him credit for being creative he makes techniques up and creates a reation to open up but the carlson gracie basics will dominated dont make mistakes and you wont get caught he lost to nate diaz my friend from carlsons he compeates alot thats why he has a name i know much better people that cant afford bjj tournaments cobrinah is great started bjj at 21 and picked it up fast alliance jacare real bjj
You know 1000 people who have fought at ADCC as a purple belt, won the mundial, medaled at the Brasiliero, and beaten a bunch of world class black belts by submission? Impressive. It must be nice to have so many talented friends.
Hall was a very good purple but not on the caliber to compete with the top browns and blacks, as we've seen here. But he's a new brown so after a couple of years I'm sure his game will open up more. You can't be a champion brown or black and only work guard. Hope he doesn't get promoted to black too soon as did Fowler (I don't hear his name anymore at all for some reason). The caliber of blacks and top browns is on a whole different level. Time will tell. Nice match Cob. See you in class
Yeah my teammate Chris advanced further in the bracket than Fowler did and Chris was and still is a brown belt. I think Kron got promoted too fast also. Look what Sergio did to him. The level of black belts has a range as wide as blue to brown, if not more so. So yeah he didn't even place. I don't think you should get promoted unless your instructor thinks you can win at that belt level. That's just how it's done at my school.
Sure but those guys are several years past prime. Now had you said Marcello Garcia and Xande Ribeiro I would not make that statement. Had he placed at CBJJ or Mundials or ADCC I would not make my comment. He did very well competitively through brown, but black is a whole different animal and his competitive results as a black belt at TOP competitition did not follow the same pace as his success at purple and brown. I don't see him ever winning ADCC or Mundials as a black. Only time will tell
You do realize that Rickson Gracie (and Lloyd Irvin) know a LOT more than you about Jiu-Jitsu and progression of an athlete, right? You're entitled to your opinion for sure, but to question their decisions when their understanding of Jiu-Jitsu is so far superior to yours in just silly.
Yeah I do realize they know a lot more than me. I also saw Fowler getting owned in Mundials and Sergio mauled Kron in the most atrocious manner. I'm going to keep my personal opinions of the grappling gameplan and the overall attitudes of the Gracies to myself and just let the matches speak for themselves. Great match Sergio and see you in class on Monday Cobrinha. You don't have to respond anymore. I'm done
Yeah me also. Anyone is fortunate to win. 12-2 is what it is however. Nearly is only good in hand grenades and horseshoes. I've nearly been choked out several times but I won all those matches.
My first NAGA match as blue I was competing against my old teammate in which I got triangled one minute in and remained in it for four minutes. Not fun. But I finally got out and passed guard with thirty seconds left and won. THAT I would say is very fortunate. The volume went out at least seven times that match. Yay brain cells
its all good cause its all jiujitsu where is the humbleness, everyone always talk about,in jiujitsu. keep that in mind in my country we say "on top of every rooster there is another rooster"ryan is good not perfect! who is?instead, encourage him in his journey that we always hear about. so please people keep the love thanks to brasil thanks to america who embrassed it fully and by the way thanks to japan how about that.allez people ciao and stay good, arrogance is a disease.
American's IN GENERAL can never catch up! Brazilians do it cos they believe JJ can improve their quality of life. Most of em are poor n look to JJ as a career. Brazilians will always want it more!
Sorry buddy, keep living in your fantasy. If you've been to Brazil, you'd know. Most of the guys in Brazil don't have enough money to compete in the mundials since they changed it to the states. Wonder why so many Brazilians dominated when it was in Brazil?
There will always b exceptions..and those BJJ guys you named above are few of them. Keep living in a dream.
wanna see them win the worlds down there in brasil...bj is the only one...much respect!!! the USA new generation is great... it only makes everybody better.. but when u see all the black belts results u can really see what still going on!
he markets him self to look great and hes is good but hes not solid bad top game and he looks for tricks cause his basics are not as strong as alot of guys when you have a solid game he will have a hard time catching you he make dumbass post and he fakes sweep and when u post throws up triangles trust me we train with the best miguel torres carlson gracie rip my friend train a few months and we trained to watch out for that and he smashed him respect the original gangsters in bjj
my friend from carlson gracie beat ryan hall smashed him in the pan am as blue blets he didnt place which is fine but people are dumb when the say how great he is hes tricky but his game is not solid trust me my friend is good in judo and did not train bjj long and beat him thats cause carlson is great and we master the basics when you have tight passing and good posture tall flexable guys will get smashed and pinned diaz beat him @ purple he does not clear his divison @ alot of gi tournaments
to the idiots who are saying Americans are catching up using Ryan Hall as an example.. Ryan Hall did nothing relevant at Purple belt... he just got eliminated in the quarter finals in the Brasileiro! The only think he won was the European Mundials, but it had no Brazilians at purple belt.. Ryan beat some random cat from Portugal and from France to get gold.. Brazilians still are better and don't need to use all these leglocks, they use beautifull and efficient technique.. and I am an American!
You fucking moron. Ryan won the no-gi Mundial at purple (beating a Brasiliero champ in the final), took 3rd this weekend at the Brasiliero in purple leve (beating the pan am champ and 2 Brazilians on the way before losing a bogus ref decision in the semi-final), beat Gordinho (black belt mundial champ) at ADCC, and has submitted NUMEROUS black belts.
Does it hurt to be as stupid as you are or do you just get used to it after a while? You may want to suicide yourself now. Go, my son.
To me the americans play a different style of bjj to the Brazillians and this is a perfect example. Can't beat the technical efficiency of the brazillian game with flashy guards like that I'm afraid. Hall would still whip my ass, I am in no denial about that.
I think Ryan is a excellent purple belt, and in my opinion he did a fairly good job defending against Rubens(the 2X black belt world champion and No-Gi World champion)attacks. I'm Brazilian, but I believe that U.S jiu jitsu is catching up the Brazilian's level and Ryan is a example of it.
What are you guys talking about. Ryan was totally dominated in this video, with the exception of some very good ground movement, he had no real offense. A weak attempt at a foot lock that Rueben rolled out of. He may be good fighting American cats but what happens when he has to fight the top guys from Brazil. From this video all I see is a guy with a wirery guard that can catch you if not careful, he's gonna need substance, substance is what Rueben used to beat him. He needs to dominate and tap
What are YOU talking about? That looked like a close footlock to me. The same one he has used to finish Scott Bieri, Rafael "Gordinho," Daniel Tavares, Jon Stutzman, and a TON of other guys. Cobrinha is definitely better right now, but what the hell do you expect? He's the freaking world champion at the black belt level at Ryan's weight.
Look closely he never had the correct leverage on that foot. Whether Rubin is a world champion or not the foot lock wasn't in, because if it were he would have gotten the tap. Ryan is good but only time will tell if he's great, and he has to tighten up his guard play. The big boys and if Ryan wants to be amongst them will walk through that guard. The Rogers, Krons, Leo's Garcia's Terere's will trash that guard play and get the tap all the time.
Anyway, i still think, he posseses at least brown belt grappling and techniques.
also you dont have to get a medal in the mundials to get promoted thats proposterus, then only 3 guys a year in every weight class should be promoted ?
I don't think Ryan is at a black belt level for world class Gi competition. Grappling wise, he's definitely ADCC level, but he didn't even get a medal at the Mundials for purples 2007, and notice you never see any Gi fights of his against black belts. I think Lloyd won't promote him until he thinks he can dominate his division. Don't get me wrong, I admire the guy, I just think that's the reason...
this is gonna be a fun rematch at ADCC... i hope... Ryan is way better and been preparing with Marcelo Garcia. SO EXCITED!

Cobrinha true master! Ryan Hall drives meet nuts, he is good but my biggest pet pev is when guys sit right of the start of a match and he does it every time
BgSchulzy 2 years ago
Cobrinha is a beast, I watch him roll 3 days a week, for about 3 hrs each of those days, and im still amazed at what he can do. Seems like every counter you put on him he has 10 counters to your counter. Simply amazing.

Well, Ryan has only been doing jiu jitsu for like five years so i'd assume that he gets better at a higher pace.

heel hooks really piss me off. I had my ACL torn really quickly and was out for 6 months from a heel hook and there wasnt even time to tap. Its the one move you can catcch a world champion with. It takes away from the technique because theres such a high risk of injury noone wants to take a chance
ilanchico 2 years ago 3
AGREED!!! i was out for a bit because of a heel hook too. only i had time to tap and was just to stupid to do so in time. wont make that mistake again though:)
kijafa2003 2 years ago
hyan has good sub skills and that 50/50 position is his best shot but cobrinha is specialized on stopping that position since he has faced bruno frazatto in 3 finals already ...brunno and the mendes brothers are masters on the 50/50 position. the diference in their leves is clear...once cobra passes it doesnt take much for the sub...if they were in a gi tornament it would be even easier!
necoZL 2 years ago 3
we could have a rematch in a few days at ADCC. Would be interesting I'm sure ryan's watched this tape 1000 times.

ryan had him in that 50 50 heel hook.
jmil147 2 years ago
@xabovethisworldx no one disagrees. ryan always impresses. i think he surprised himself by catching up that inv heel hook. even more impressive is cob getting out of it... and that's why he's the man.
gavin32 1 year ago
@xabovethisworldx I agree, I think Cobrinha got his blackbelt by then.....it only took him 6 years I think too, I got to talk to him a few months ago when i visited alliance, I mean hes a great guy, but I didnt like the attitude i got when i went...They wernt friendly at all

@xabovethisworldx True, but not much different. He hung in there for a lot longer than most.

Ryan hall is a beast, but he had NOTHING for Cobrinha.
And heel hooks are by no means pussy, but when you have to dive for them like ryan did it shows you are outclassed and are grasping for any way to fin the match.

Everyone uses them. You need to train more if you think that. Cobrinha uses them in the 2008 Grapplers Quest. Is he a coward? Is Royler and BJ Penn? Or do you just not like because you cannot understand them?

splinter182 3 years ago
I'm suprised Cob even got involved with that 50/50 mess. Tricky. The one thing that seems to negate all the other skills and positions of jiu jitsu are the heel hooks and ankle locks. I've heel hooked some guys way better than me. They are just easier to go for than arms and chokes I think.
straightflushnuts 3 years ago
It's more that traditionally not a lot of time/effort is put into working leg locks in general because they were considered lower class techs back in the day and now it's wayyyy riskier to have a beginner train heel hooks/use them rolling than armbars/triangles etc. Some newer dudes are very quick to slap on dangerous heelhooks to more experienced guys and just crank because they don't understand, or they have it put on them and they roll the wrong way which is a huge huge risk.
tohst 3 years ago 4
It's not that surprising, seeing as the 50/50 is part of Cobrinha's game. He dominates his gi divisions with 50/50 sweeps.
Ankle locks? Right now I can think of only one ADCC level no-gi fight and no gi fight worth mentioning that has ended in an ankle lock, they aren't exactly effective at a high level. More of a backup plan.
ATec04 2 years ago
Dean Lister v Saulo, Mike Fowler v. Saulo, Ricco Rodruquez v. Noguiera, to name 3.
cerebralassassin78 2 years ago 2
Let me clarify, "straight ankle locks". While I guess the toehold is technically an ankle lock, I only ever tap to it due to pressure on the knee.
ATec04 2 years ago
its cause most ppl are decent enough not to go for breaks durring free rolling and tournaments, im sure if people actually went for the break they would win but ryan and ppllik him arent lik that, ryan would ahve won if he just went to break cors knee
andrew7913 2 years ago
I have to disagree. It was never close, he secured the position, not the submission, and as far as going for the break, I have seen Ryan destroying knees before, not to say with malicious intent mind you, but if he could have finished that he would have, and I don't think Cobrinha's victory could be credited to any holding back on Ryan's part. He simply got outplayed by someone on an entirely different level.
ATec04 2 years ago 2
You also seem to think the "break" was threat of an ankle breaking there, he was attempting a heel hook, not an ankle lock, I have never seen Ryan attempt a straight ankle lock.
ATec04 2 years ago
i def said knee, and i never said it was close?
andrew7913 2 years ago
ryan has injured people with heel hooks in tourneys
jmil147 2 years ago
Should have tapped then, shouldn't they?
WestCoastLegend90 2 years ago
yea i wasnt dissing ryan, its his job to pursue the submission. "andrew 7913" said that ryan could have finished cobrinha if he had been trying to hurt him, i was simply saying that it hasnt stopped him before.
jmil147 2 years ago
Umm, how about Dave Terrell vs. Ricardo Almeida. An example of a quick ADCC ankle lock submission would be Andre Galvao vs. Mark Bocek.
NOCDIB 2 years ago
If you secure the leg properly there is no more of an effective lock than the ankle lock, the pain is immediate and the damage can last a lifetime......what on Gods green earth are you talking about!
vincespell 2 years ago
i agree...heel hooks are the great equalizer
jmil147 2 years ago
Cobrinha does what is very difficult against Hall and that is achieve side control, you can learn a lot at the 2:50 mark.
inventiontension 3 years ago 2
Then again not many people win Mundial BB or ADCC so not to say Fowler isn't very good. He'd beat me without too much effort but I'm not talking about how great I am b/c I'm just pretty good lol. Rafael Lovato Jr. was only the second American outside of BJ Penn to win gold at Mundials. Moriarty will be the third.

See you in class
straightflushnuts 3 years ago
is it just me but it seems Ryan just uses his flexibility as his only offense when it comes to his matches
vitorshaolin 3 years ago
I totally agree, a example of brown belt world class level is the Mendes brothers, they have amazing technique from guard to top position.
preal10 3 years ago
You think Fowler got promoted too soon? Did you see ADCC 2007???
ParamountBJJ 3 years ago 2
Yeah my teammate Chris advanced further in the bracket than Fowler did and Chris was and still is a brown belt. I think Kron got promoted too fast also. Look what Sergio did to him. The level of black belts has a range as wide as blue to brown, if not more so. So yeah he didn't even place. I don't think you should get promoted unless your instructor thinks you can win at that belt level. That's just how it's done at my school.
straightflushnuts 3 years ago
So you saw Fowler beat Renzo Gracie and submit 6x Black Belt World Champion Saulo Ribeiro.
ParamountBJJ 3 years ago
Sure but those guys are several years past prime. Now had you said Marcello Garcia and Xande Ribeiro I would not make that statement. Had he placed at CBJJ or Mundials or ADCC I would not make my comment. He did very well competitively through brown, but black is a whole different animal and his competitive results as a black belt at TOP competitition did not follow the same pace as his success at purple and brown. I don't see him ever winning ADCC or Mundials as a black. Only time will tell
straightflushnuts 3 years ago
"I think Kron got promoted too fast also."
ParamountBJJ 3 years ago 3
Yeah I do realize they know a lot more than me. I also saw Fowler getting owned in Mundials and Sergio mauled Kron in the most atrocious manner. I'm going to keep my personal opinions of the grappling gameplan and the overall attitudes of the Gracies to myself and just let the matches speak for themselves. Great match Sergio and see you in class on Monday Cobrinha. You don't have to respond anymore. I'm done
straightflushnuts 3 years ago
sergio nearly got choked out by a cross choke. he was very fortunate to have won. i was there.
spleenbuster 3 years ago
Yeah me also. Anyone is fortunate to win. 12-2 is what it is however. Nearly is only good in hand grenades and horseshoes. I've nearly been choked out several times but I won all those matches.
straightflushnuts 3 years ago 3
My first NAGA match as blue I was competing against my old teammate in which I got triangled one minute in and remained in it for four minutes. Not fun. But I finally got out and passed guard with thirty seconds left and won. THAT I would say is very fortunate. The volume went out at least seven times that match. Yay brain cells

Keep living in a dream.

my friend from carlson gracie beat ryan hall smashed him in the pan am as blue blets he didnt place which is fine but people are dumb when the say how great he is hes tricky but his game is not solid trust me my friend is good in judo and did not train bjj long and beat him thats cause carlson is great and we master the basics when you have tight passing and good posture tall flexable guys will get smashed and pinned diaz beat him @ purple he does not clear his divison @ alot of gi tournaments

to the idiots who are saying Americans are catching up using Ryan Hall as an example.. Ryan Hall did nothing relevant at Purple belt... he just got eliminated in the quarter finals in the Brasileiro! The only think he won was the European Mundials, but it had no Brazilians at purple belt.. Ryan beat some random cat from Portugal and from France to get gold.. Brazilians still are better and don't need to use all these leglocks, they use beautifull and efficient technique.. and I am an American!
killerdogmenor 3 years ago
You fucking moron. Ryan won the no-gi Mundial at purple (beating a Brasiliero champ in the final), took 3rd this weekend at the Brasiliero in purple leve (beating the pan am champ and 2 Brazilians on the way before losing a bogus ref decision in the semi-final), beat Gordinho (black belt mundial champ) at ADCC, and has submitted NUMEROUS black belts.
Does it hurt to be as stupid as you are or do you just get used to it after a while? You may want to suicide yourself now. Go, my son.

And LOL at "all these leglocks." What are you? A white belt?

onetwo1285 3 years ago
To me the americans play a different style of bjj to the Brazillians and this is a perfect example. Can't beat the technical efficiency of the brazillian game with flashy guards like that I'm afraid. Hall would still whip my ass, I am in no denial about that.
tonkachow 3 years ago
I think Ryan is a excellent purple belt, and in my opinion he did a fairly good job defending against Rubens(the 2X black belt world champion and No-Gi World champion)attacks. I'm Brazilian, but I believe that U.S jiu jitsu is catching up the Brazilian's level and Ryan is a example of it.
preal10 3 years ago 2
i think ryan should be a brown atleast
admbjj 3 years ago
What are you guys talking about. Ryan was totally dominated in this video, with the exception of some very good ground movement, he had no real offense. A weak attempt at a foot lock that Rueben rolled out of. He may be good fighting American cats but what happens when he has to fight the top guys from Brazil. From this video all I see is a guy with a wirery guard that can catch you if not careful, he's gonna need substance, substance is what Rueben used to beat him. He needs to dominate and tap
vincespell 3 years ago
What are YOU talking about? That looked like a close footlock to me. The same one he has used to finish Scott Bieri, Rafael "Gordinho," Daniel Tavares, Jon Stutzman, and a TON of other guys. Cobrinha is definitely better right now, but what the hell do you expect? He's the freaking world champion at the black belt level at Ryan's weight.
Morons...
onetwo1285 3 years ago
Look closely he never had the correct leverage on that foot. Whether Rubin is a world champion or not the foot lock wasn't in, because if it were he would have gotten the tap. Ryan is good but only time will tell if he's great, and he has to tighten up his guard play. The big boys and if Ryan wants to be amongst them will walk through that guard. The Rogers, Krons, Leo's Garcia's Terere's will trash that guard play and get the tap all the time.
vincespell 3 years ago
Anyway, i still think, he posseses at least brown belt grappling and techniques.
also you dont have to get a medal in the mundials to get promoted thats proposterus, then only 3 guys a year in every weight class should be promoted ?
but i understand your thinking..
i still think hes Fu*****g fenomenal.
sibic500 3 years ago
Its an absolute shame and a slap in the face for black belts world wide that Ryan is not a Black belt..
Does his team mate fowler ever submitt him during traning ??
does lloyd submitt him ??
how many black belts does he have to beat to recive his black belt ??
sibic500 3 years ago
I don't think Ryan is at a black belt level for world class Gi competition. Grappling wise, he's definitely ADCC level, but he didn't even get a medal at the Mundials for purples 2007, and notice you never see any Gi fights of his against black belts. I think Lloyd won't promote him until he thinks he can dominate his division. Don't get me wrong, I admire the guy, I just think that's the reason...
