This was one of Keef's country influenced song after he had been hanging out with Gram Parsons. Keef admits he pumped Gram for eveything he knew about country. Good song.
It is odd, then, that Townes attributes it to the Stones and recorded it on an album that is all covers (Roadsongs). Does this rumor comes from the video where Townes joked about it being his? You are misinformed. I will say, though, that I think the Junies version owes a lot to Townes' cover.
not the best cover of this song i've heard but i love cowboy junkies & consider this more of a re-working of this song rather than a cover, they took ALL of the rolling stones out of this song & made it just another great cowboy junkies song. the only reason this works for me is becuz i love both bands.
I normally like the Cowboy Junkies, but I am gonna have to go ahead and say that I really don't think this is such a great cover. I just don't think it was meant to be slowed down this much or to have such a soft feminine voice singing it. I think this song is supposed to have a little bite to it and this cover totally lacks that.
I love this version of the song and have been looking everywhere on cd. It was played on a radio station in Texas about 12 years or so, ago. I have looked since then to hear it again. This is absolutely great. Thanks so much for posting it!
The Cowboy Junkies can play any song and make it great, This is a good example of that...they take an already great song like Dead Flowers...put their own unique spin on it and suddenly you have another fantastic song...
This is beautiful! I'm the first to comment. Two thumbs up, for having great taste in music, great recording (sound is amazing), and 10* for posting such a great song! Roses :)

This is a Townes Van Zandt song that was covered by the Stones. It's not their song..

@deuceman9450 How do you figure? The Stones wrote it and they recorded in 1970.

@matadormitten Totally agree. If a sister sings it, it should sound like this: watch?v=vKOAryfQSqo
This is what a cover of this song should sound like. Just sayin'.
