  • It's too bad the Volvo was turned on with the computer being wet. At any rate, you might take the computer out and drop it into a container filled with alcohol. The more pure the better. 70-91% will do fine. Roll it around until the bubbles stop coming out and leave it there for a couple days. If the alcohol looks dirty at any point, replace it. Then take it out and let it dry. It may work fine afterwards. If not, all you're out is a a few dollars, but chances are good it will.

  • @Jakstr1981 yea, but the computer was just the tip of the iceberg, all the electronics were crapping out on this old volvo. It's resting in a field now with a bunch of older cars waiting to be reanimated.

  • Holly shit you live in houston!

  • would you leave the injectors plugged in when trying to start it.

  • @380gb if it's really flooded out, you'd unplug em to start it first.

  • What would that normally look like, if there was no water? Would there be liquid gas? or just gasous gas. (lol)

  • @freakin1random just invisible gas unless it was flooded out with gasoline, then it would be liquid gas.

  • Scotty. I saw a 95 Olds Cutless with 3100 engine at used car lot, 99k miles. It had the usual blown LIM gasket with "milkshake" oil in the crankcase. They let me crank it and the engine sounded ok, no noises, ran smooth. I know how to replace the gasket, but I wonder if this car worth is taking a chance(?) Not holding you to anything, just wanted your opinion. Thanks.

  • @wtawhite I would only take it if the car was free. No saying what kind of damage exists inside the engine. You'd never know until taking it apart.

  • man id be trying to find a computer second hand or otherwise for that. My dads friend had a volvo wagon and it was one solid car! and a few years back there was a story in the local news of a couple teenagers stole a volvo wagon, went joy riding, lost control and smashed it into the brick wall of a tim hortons in halifax, when they showed the cops backing the car out, other than a few scratches and the headlight there were no dents even bricks laying on the hood. Volvos = Swedish tanks

  • @moogmanXanders there's a LOT more wrong with that old volvo than a wet computer, the whole electronic system got damaged, tons more than the worth of the car to fix it correctly. It was towed away by a guy who collects old cars and sits on em decades before he sometimes fixes a few of em.

  • @scottykilmer Ouch, a sad end to a tough car. I remember they used to take it off the beaten path all the time to get to fishing spots and it would roll through anything, even had that weird reverse where you pulled the collar of the shifter up and put it in i think it was either 5th or 1st to get reverse.

  • shame about the volvo, wqould outlast the toyboata...

  • umm scotty how fix it?..or can i take my car to any regular mecanic,? thanks

  • scotty my honda accord 2000 has the "check the engine " lights on and i took it to auto zone and it gave me code p0505? what does it means? and my car when i put my car on parking the motor makes a noise as it was stuck or loosing power..can u help me or give me an advice thanks.

  • @xona02 505 is idle speed control system problem. In those, often a bad IAC valve or a clogged up one.

  • Wow scotty that pulling the spark plugs out and cranking it over thing worked man. You are my hero thank you.

  • Cool video. Always wondered how you get the water out of your engine.

  • Scotty, i've been working a 88 Chrysler lebaron and while replacing the thermostat coolant got all over the engine, and now every time i start it in the morning it idels real rough for about 30 seconds, like water got in the spark plugs, is it to late to take out the spark plugs and get all the water out?

  • @MrBunsX I would do that and pray it didn't damage other electronics.

  • Poor Volvo. It would most likely be fine if the wet ECU was replaced with a good used one.

  • i learn alot from you...

  • Scotty your here in Houston?

  • @Bouzoukiellas yep, you can e mail me for appointments monday thru friday when I'm working, I do work on them of course.

  • Scotty you are really quite a character. Enjoyed the vids.

  • Scotty i see u drive older toyotas, what kind do u an your wife drive? im wanting to buy a 2nd car a 94 celica

  • To hell with that. I'd save a Volvo 740 over a Camry any day.

    Cool vid, though.

  • @TheNormalberries I'm pretty sure that Volvo was a 240 xD

  • @AnytimeMinutes It's a post facelift (1990 - 1992) 740.

  • Also do you do any body work to cars?

  • Do you restore old classic cars? Like camaro's? Please respond :D

  • @CamaroBrony yes, it's fun to drive then when someone else pays for it.

  • seriusly that looks like a volvo 740 or 940 even if the engine has been flooded no oil and shot those cars will still start...my volvo 740 has over 380k and still going strong...

  • Or call the insurance so they can total it.

  • i thought he meant the carb

  • yeah I guess. Jmoyet, 22 years is pretty good, what car do you have? I have a 97 Lancer and 2000 Land Rover Freelander. The Japanese made Lancer just seems to run fine without any hassles ever. Yesterday I flushed the cooling system and changed the engine oil.

  • @jascokovacevic a 94 toyota celica is my work car, used to be an 81 corolla SR5, but the wife made me sell it.

  • lmfao what the shit, for some reason I felt the need to tell Scotty he's the man, seems enough other people have beat me to it this past week looking at the comments...

    awesome, as always scott (:

  • your the man keep making vids. showing more Dodge dakotas would be nice.

  • Kids also wind up hydrolocking an engine and bending a connecting rod, cracking rings, etc due to driving through water with a low mounted cold air intake

  • or pull another computer matching computer from a junk yard save your car from becoming the next car being taken apart at the junk yard

  • @jmoyet you can only do that on old cars, cause now they are all programmed for your individual car and keys, they would never start up a different car.

  • @scottykilmer Which is why i prefer older vehicles. Seems that new vehicles are being made so Do-it-yourself mechanics cant do as much anymore without having to go to a dealer and spending hundreds.

  • @scottykilmer Incorrect. Well, for people without a laptop. I have had to replace the pcm in my 94 T/A and my 04 silverado. For the 94, Even with its VATS system, It dropped right in and worked. Was not a issue at all on my truck, Even if it was, it takes 2 mins to disabled the vats systems.

  • @jmoyet With the 20 year old Volvo in the video, better not to get it going & better for the junk yard as chances are, the original clutch plate (if it's a standard manual transmission) & the original brake pads, would probably have been made out of asbestos.

  • @jascokovacevic think those would of been replace many times in the last 20 years. my car is 22 years old still runs great

  • Scotty kilmer you are the man!

  • Scotty, in this vid you say the pistons can bend if you try to start the engine. I think it's the rods which get damaged in the event of a hydrolock.

Sorry if someone has pointed this out before.

  • @Taunuslunatic yes, the piston rods if you want to be more precise, they can bend, but the pistons themselves also can be damaged by breaking the wrist pins.

  • We get alot of flooding here in CA, iv gone through 7 cars do to hydrolock within 4 years... its a nightmare. This'll come in handy for whenever we get floods down here in San Fransisco.

  • @staircast You don't need to get rid of cars from hydrolock, take all the spark plugs out of the engine and turn the engines over until it spits all the water out of the plug holes and put in new spark plugs and pour a little bit of oil in the cylinder before putting in the new plugs and see if it runs

  • Just want to say if you don't like Scotty's vids then don't watch them but I do, it is excellent advice from someone in the know. 5 dislikes - 5 people lost their cars in a lake lol

  • Hey scotty, do you ground the plugs when you're turning the engine over?

  • @pvongphachanh Na, I don't bother, but you can if you want. Only long extended cranking would do any damage.

  • scotty = bias to volvos. quit hatin lol. you can easily buy a new computer for it on the internet for cheap, or even try a junkyard.... that was a classic volvo

  • @DaBossk sure, but the computer isn't going to be the only electrical part shot on that car, it would be an endless chasing the dragon on that thing, water got over the seats, ALL insurance companies will total such a car anyway.

  • love your Videos Scotty, You present auto repairs in a logical way that i can follow.

Also, my problem, ( perhaps You can answer ) i have a 94 Ford F-150 truck. 4.9 engine

What can i put in the oil , and gas to make sure i pass smog here in Calif.

  • @Garybe441 just have clean oil in the engine, but if it fails the test, try a gallon of lacquer thinner in half a tank of gas and drive it 100 miles to clean things out

  • @scottykilmer Does automatic transmission fluid work too? I heard old schoolers used to use that as a means to clean the engine like how kids these days buy when they "Seafoam" their engine. My engine overhaul teacher mentioned that, so I was just asking. Then again, they would use that transmission fluid and have to drive 500 miles to break down all the gunky oil in the engine vs 100 miles with the lacquer.

  • @24okay NO, never use auto fluid in a modern car, it will ruin the cat and oxygen sensors.

  • @scottykilmer Oh ok good to know. I didn't consider all those other emission parts. Thanks Scotty! BTW, I shared your videos with people on my facebook, and they absolutely LOVE your channel. I got so many thank yous, it's not even funny.

  • Once again Scotty, your video very informative and entertaining. Great job explaining mechanical spects. I watch your videos because a lot of mechanics cant be trusted and dont know what they are talking about. I can trust what you say.

  • Can u please make a video "what to do if your airbag / abs lamp is on " my airbag lamp is on and i have no idea what to do.

  • @Hypnotisk sure, but basically you have to see a mechanic, cause you need a dealer level scan tool to work and repair such systems. I have one, but most people don't.

  • Hi scotty is it normal that when I put my 07 Ranger on the 4x4 that I have hard time to make tight turn ??? it shakes a little and it look like i was on diff lock

    Thanks for your help !

  • @evadvalcourt

I have a 96 GMC that does the same thing. According to what I'm reading its normal behavior in 4wd on 'high traction' surface. The front and rear axles are actually locked with each other in 4wd so it basically is diff lock.

If I'm wrong I'd like to know.

  • Great videos scotty, only have 1 negative thing to say about. Calm down and loose the freak out - style. Awesome videos. - fan from finland.

  • @bujashaka NO, I refuse to be boring. but that may be your culture, I've seen a few movies from Finland and man, did they put me to sleep.

  • @scottykilmer Ok, so it's a culture behaviour thingy. I've noticed that in most american films and tv shows they speak fast and furious ;)

    Making me dizzy.

  • @espy6148

more than likely a blown head gasket. does the exhaust smell sweet? is the oil grey/milky? does your truck overheat?

  • You should be able to save the computer too if you remove it and dry it all out.

  • @ventureelect Nope, not on this old volvo, it's all shorted out, they stay live and power and dirty water ruin them when mixed.

  • Hey I need help. I wanted to get a Mazda RX8. 04-05 I need help whether or not to get it. Help :( thanks if you do reply! :)

  • @batcab52 Nice looking car, but known for problems. I wouldn't buy one myself.

  • is it ok to buy a flood damage car? they change the engine?

  • @danielc49102 I would not, too many things can go bad in the long run. Unless it was Really cheap

  • I have a bucket with R-134a fittings on the lid. You can pull moisture out of a computer by putting it in such a bucket and putting vacuum on it and then leaving it overnight. Sometimes a bucket of rice will absorb out the moisture as well.

  • @briansmobile1 Yes that rice or any grain trick works also for cell phones and other

  • @briansmobile1 ....the vacuum does't 'pull' the moisture out. the drop in pressure decreases the boiling point of the water in the computer, and the water simply evaporates. Reverse effect of an engine cooling system. cheers.

  • what about the tranny oil on that toyota skotty?

toyota is the strongest car on the road

  • Hi Scotty, this has nothing to do with the video but i have a question. We have a 2008 Nissan Versa, and it is time for a transmission flush. I have the factory service manual and all it says to do is release the plug on the bottom of the pan and refill the fluid to the proper level. This is a CVT transmission, so I know it is very sensitive to proper fluid. My question is even though the manual says nothing about changing a filter, I feel uneasy not changing it after its break in. Any advice?

  • @BJCN100 just drain and fill, that's fine for any CVT tranny.

  • @BJCN100 the CVT is more simpler than any regular auto bettter too

  • Back in in the early 70s I worked as a parts runner for jasper engine trans in Louisville ky . some guy towed in a 69 mustang with a 390 duel 4 . It had water injection I am sure you have heard of it. It had malfunctioned and dumped water in the carbs . He thought the engine was blown . The guys pulled out the plugs and did the same as you did . After that the car ran like a top . Funny thing he kept the water injection.

  • good vid by the way.

  • You also should have disconnected the fuel line of Volvo as you wasted some fuel while you cranked the engine.

  • @SuperStigiBoi didn't waste anything, that was flooded fuel from a bad main computer that stopped the whole process in its tracks, sent it to the yard.

  • What part of Houston is this? I live in Houston and would like you to be the mechanic for my Honda S2000 when something goes bad.

  • @Jorge228272 downtown houston, just e mail me for appointment when you need one, I work M-F

  • is there a lot of rain in your part of the country.??

  • @Liamautomechanic we had the biggest drought in 100 years last year, but normally it rains like mad in spurts.

  • @scottykilmer it rains a lot,in ireland, i guess thats why every thing is green.

  • must be a respone video to the flash flood that happened here in houston not too long ago

  • That spark plug thing looks fun. That's actually what they did to the Toyota Hellux on Top Gear when they pulled it out of the ocean. That Volvo really need to go to the junkyard Scotty? Ain't there anything you could do or couldn't the owner keep driving it? If their driving a 20 year old car it's probably emotional attachment or out of necessity after all.

  • @nightpwner owner didn't want to spend any money ona car she got free from her parents, and the damage electronically was severe.

  • @nightpwner I would recommend donating it to charity, at least that way chances are it would get fixed up and made drivable again

  • Hi Scotty I have a question. How do screws and bolts get rusted so fast in cars these days? Why don't manufacturers use stainless steel or better quality screws and bolts? Every time I try to change a part in my car a screw gets stripped or rounded. It's very frustrating.

  • @saquibs20 Because everything's made so cheaply these days, do like me, drive old cars.

  • fuck keeping that newer toyota thats been flooded, I suspect you'll run into mold, electrical reliability problems in the future. file a claim with your insurance and wash your hands on a potential problems!

  • Mr. Plow licence plate.

  • VERY NICE, I SUBSCRIBE NOW

  • Even at the bottom of the ocean water only compresses by about 5%.. considering the massive weight of water on top of it, that's impressive.

  • :( my sister 2012 mustang got flooded in the flood in Houston a couple of days ago.

  • My rear windows in my car aren't working properly, what should I do?

its like going down for an inch or 2 and thats it

its a 2001 ford focus and my car didn't have the factory window motors it only had those hanles so I guess my car's previous owners changed that

  • @LPWWE06 you need new window regulator assemblies then, pretty expensive, you might leave it alone

  • What about the ABS and Airbag ECUs for the Camry I think those are on the floor did they get soaking wet too?

  • @sm2by they're not on the floor in this model.

  • What's your stance on putting as much money into a car as it's worth? I'm talking about cars that are probably worth about a grand.

  • @mariofreak91 I never do it, but I buy toyotas and they run forever if you take care of em, I don't care what the "value" is in the book for em.

  • Comment removed

  • Hi scotty can you check out my video on my car troubles, any advice is greatly appreciated. Go Scotty! /watch?v=c_Jli5K__qE&feature=youtu.be

  • Scott, I love all your video. I learn a lot and it's so fun to learn because you are heck of fun teacher. Thanks so much for taking time put up the video.

  • Great video - one thing I wanted to add about the computer, I'm a retired electronics tech and many a time on ckt boards when covered in pop or water or ? a good cleaning with a ckt board cleaner from your local radio shack and some drying time solves most troubles, unless of course the ckt board was used when still wet and then the possibility of damage parts comes into play, but a try at a $9.00 can of cleaner is worth it verses a computer module replacement, especially on a 20 year old car:)

  • great if only he posted this video earlier -_- my car was flooded on the 1/12/12

  • Hi Scotty, how about , don't start the car first, remove the ECU (computer) dry it with air compressor and hair dryer, leave under the sun for half and hour , then remove the water from the engine?

  • @axenz1 thats probably not a safe bet there pal, it will have residual power in it already no doubt and the water crosses the points on the circuit board acting as a dull wire . and there is probably a 10percent chance your method might save the cpu i'd say.

  • whole time Im thinking he meant the car was flood in engine terms.

  • @J90lude Ah, the english language. Scotty

  • MR PLOW

  • Scotty you're the man, subbed.

  • Another great Video Scotty, Much appreciated.

  • @scottykilmer i have a 2000 Honda civic ex and when ur stop at a red light the car wants to shut down but it doesn't.. its like stutters something like that. its only happens at a red light.. no engine light.. what could it be??

  • @sail2boat11 watch my other vid "how to fix a car that idles poorly"

  • Hey i work for RAC in the uk. went out to a brand new BMW 530d m-sport that went through deep water and cut out. what happend you may ask......car is scrapmetal in few days ins will write it off

  • @scottykilmer I have. The thing is, I HAD an oil leak. When I took care of that, the remaining oil that had dripped somewhere in the engine would heat up and you could smell the oil inside the cabin. The burning oil smell is gone now, but the car is running poorly.

  • I'm in UK and Scotty is great, it don't matter what country you in cause Scotty's videos are aimed at most cars. Cheers Scotty.

  • Scotty rules man!!

  • Ur a smart man Scotty

  • IMO modern car that has been swimmed so bad, is junk immediately. All the connections, ECUs, wiring and and electrical stuff won't necessarily get damaged immeadiately, but over time it will cause nothing but troubles. Changing them costs a fortune and is not reasoble. This is why you have insurance.

  • How can you bend a piston ?

  • @Vappi94 gasoline vapors and air mixing in the engine compress by the pistons. But water getting into the engine does not compress much at all, it's hard. So the piston rods bend and break instead.

  • @Vappi94 a piston dont bend but a connecting rod will because liquids dont compress and air does and vapor does removeing a spark plug will save a rod from bending when any liquid is in a closed space

  • What about Transmition do you need to change the Oil? i had this problem and I change Engine, Diferential but didn't change the transmition and after a month it started to slip Locky for me Waranty cover the transmition Overhole.

  • @karattini Yes, any fluid that had water in it needs changing. These didn't get wet so they didnt' need it, no water was inside.

  • Hey Scotty,

My hyundai accent's central locking has stopped working, and so too has the power windows. I am planning to open the side panel soon, but don't know what I am looking for that might not be working. Could you please help?

  • @69sico96 first, check all the fuses and pray it's just that. Then check the relays if it's not that, and pray it's not a wiring or computer problem.

  • Scotty; If you had unplugged all submerged electrical conectors and blowen them dry. Removed the computer module blown it dry and soaked it in a solvent then let it dry out do you think it could have saved that Volvo computer and if not then why not? Many say a water submerged cell phone can be saved this way.

  • @bfenti NO, it was too far gone soaking for a few days. As volvos have power to the computer all the time, it was shot for good.

  • @scottykilmer Scotty; Would it be wise if there is any danger of your car flooding and you can't get it to higher ground to disconect the battery before abandoning it?

  • @bfenti I think that if that Volvo's owner had done that, the electronics wouldn't be badly damaged.

  • I love You, and I'm a man

  • These vids are all so awesome from the camera angles to the editing to Scotty's enthusiasm. Gotta love it!

  • 2.44 MR PLOW lol

  • Your the best scotty u honestly should have like ur own dvds ur productions are so interesting and fun and the facts are there and simple keep it up!

  • I learned something more today, Scotty. Thanks.

  • I continue to ask myself if I'm watching these videos for education or entertainment! They never get old, thanks for all the info Scotty!

  • When are you going to do a video on resurfacing rotors?

  • @doctorken2k I never do that anymore, just replace em. modern rotors are so cheap, they warp when resurfaced, or warp soon after from hard braking

  • OK Scotty love the license plate on the van Mr plow. LOL guess what do u know there is really blinker fluid it is in the gauge cluster yeah if it has a liquid crystal display so there is fluid for blikners LOL and there is a muffler bearing its that graphite doughnut gasket it acts like a bearing

  • Hey Scotty, my dad's Hyundai accent(09) was flooded this past fall. He didnt have any engine issues, but the airbag light is on. Assuming the airbag module is under the seat and got flooded, would I be able to simply replace that module to make the light go off?

  • @nadman009 there are airbag electronics all over the place, and you need a dealer level scan tool to analyze the stupid things. I don't mess with em myself.

  • I like the new van double door outro lol

  • dam who would ever thought of this , only scotty can. thank you

  • Nice info. Thanks!

  • Thanks, Scotty

  • Rain in Texas, yeah the drought is over. Cars as submarines that sucks. I guess here in Oregon will start seeing newscast stories on the pitfalls of buying a used car that been flooded.

  • "What To Do If Your Car Is Flooded"

    - Sell It Right after you fix it

  • Great....I learned something new today...Thank you!!

  • Hey scotty any chance you doing a video on flushing the heater core and maybe the fuel tank?

  • What about the gas tank, can water get in there?

  • @TypicalUser7 the gas cap is sealed shut. so nope

  • @TypicalUser7 not if the cap is on tight, it's a sealed system.

  • You are a real gangster Scotty yeayya!! Great video

  • You need to refill the headlight fluid.

  • Scotty a long time ago I was stuck by a flood and I drove up into a gas station and stayed there with other drivers waiting for it to go down. A lady there couldn’t wait and she decided to drive in the water and it came up ½ way up her door. After that there was a debate of how to drive in water. I said you had to step on the brake the whole time to build up pressure and someone else said you didn’t have to do that. If under the gun, how do you drive in deep water?

  • @moofushu it's impossible for a car to drive in deep water. like Scotty said in the video, the engine will suck up the water from the air filter.

  • @moofushu Na, don't touch the brakes and go Slow, then pump em after getting out of the water if you make it.

  • Scotty, by far the best video you've made so far! Thanks for the knowledge over the years.

  • awsome Volvo spit
