I believe you came to my school when I was in 4th grade (2004-2005) to coach us in some sort of play. Lincoln School in massachusetts. I enjoyed the experience if I remember correctly, interesting to learn of your musical endeavors!
Man, you rock sir. I bet ol' Chet is tappin' his toes in Heaven. Thanks for sharing your talent. I've been playing since 7 and I'm 54 and still learning. I finger pick but for songwriting only; I don't posess your skill level. I have a Raimudo classical with a solid cedar top. Best guitar I've owned, and had lots of them. Keep posting. Thanks. :-)
This is one of the guitar videos on YT i like very much. OMG, how cool he play this, and than the words at the end..... an absolut master Guy van Duser.!!
I can remember me. 25Years ago i was in jazz club karslruhe (Schlachthof-gaststätte) Duke Baker and John Renborn gave a concert there. After the concert i ask Duke Baker.. äääh.. i have forgot what i ask him..... he he he he Cheers
I had the pleasure of working with guy in a music store in Ridgewood in the 60's. At the time Guy worked the counter & did meanial stuff (you have to remember he was just a kid back then). He would pick up a guitar & start playing & the whole place would stop & come listen. I introduced Guy to another great Ragtime Guitarist; Rick Schoenfeld who also worked there & they eventually did an album together. He is truly a genius ... JKudos Guy!
@DogCatchersBand I'm glad He wasn't there at Berklee when I attended in the 70's.What pathetic drivel, lifeless, soulless, music? When I went to Berklee it was strictly a Jazz school.Period!I thank the lord every day that my playing "swings".
I found his book in La Central Library years ago with a casset tape attached and learned how to play fingerstyle all because of the things I learned in that book. I would love to see him and Emanuel jam together.
For some reason my comment didn't "stick" to IhsanThe Mighty's comment. I guess I'm the fifth person to click on this thinking it was an Entombed song. I wonder how many people clicked on Entombed thinking it was going to be this. Hmm.
The debate about what is Jazz and what is ragtime is covered in the Wikipedia article on Jellyroll Morton. It comes to semantics. A Lomax went there. Figure the first recorded music was in the nineteenth century on piano scrolls, then TEA's wax ones. If Morton had a card calling himself "the originator of Jazz", more power to him. I like the raw sound of Guy's rendition. Berklee also can teach you how to improve a track. What do you want from YouTube? Guys recordings are high quality. Buy them!
I have to differ on the nomenclature. There are many major blues out there which are a bit bouncy like "The Empty Pocket Blues" of Pete Seeger. Blues come in both the major variety and the minor variety. If there is a predominantly major quality about it - listen to the subtlety of chord changes. Some of them are relatively minor whether it exhorts crying in one's beer over a post jelly roll depression, or if you happen to find it more wistful. Some of us have been enjoying this Guy since WOBC.
"Some of us have been enjoying this Guy since WOBC "
I hope you don't think I was being negative in any way about his playing. The first thing I said was "excellent playing" - and I did enjoy it. It just sounded more 'rag time' to me than most of the blues I have heard. You have me curious now - so I'm going to do some research on ' rag time ' and see if I can trace its roots.
In my private message I meant to say, you can find the link to Chet Atkins' Stars and Stripes here on this page. I re-iterate that I think Guy's rendition of that one perhaps outdoes Chet Atkins but I don't think the Van Duser version is on YouTube. To say anything outdoes Chet Atkins is saying a lot.
I live in the Nashville area. I heard Chet 'back in the day' when he first played it. Chet gave credit where due and mentioned who he got the arrangement from. I was amazed at the performance.
I first heard Guy Van Duser when we both played on WOBC in 1967. New at this? I can't claim to have heard Chet Atkins up close. I did hear him play live on t.v once. I'm old enough to remember some of his work when it was fresh on 50's radio. His variations on Elizabeth Cotton's Freight Train are astounding. Andy Stein from Prairie Home companion band taught me a shortened version of that. I'm not a player like any of those "guys." At it a while? That I can say. Me a kidder? Why bother?
I have Guy's "Stride Guitar" album from many years ago. He and Chet are the only players that I've heard do "The Stars and Stripes Forever" on the guitar. Glad to know that Guy is still out there making such great music.
guy can be the self appointed inventor of awesomeness

excellent playing.
This 'blues' title seems wrong.
Blues are 'sad'.
Ragtime is happy.
Let's rename it "Ragtime Wolvorine "
This song is definitely 'happy' - quick, bouncy, lite -makes you want to dance the
"Charleston" , not cry in your beer.
