i think that if i had written this song i wouldve had to give myself a congratulatory blowjob. seriously tho... some songs just grab yer heart and sqeeze till ya cry. this is one of em. by the way if anyone knows how to play this version on guitar id love to be able to sing n play this song. johnnys version is just a lot better than any of the others.
Try finding the video of mr. Hartford himself performing it solo on banjo. I believe the title is "Learning to smile - Gentle on my mind". He's the one who wrote it. I just love Cash, and this version, but Johns own is the very best IMO.
There's something about this song, that I find very amazing. It really can't be heard on the YouTube version here. However, I have the "Unearthed" 5-CD set by Johnny Cash where the song resides. Listening to the song on my MP3 player with ear buds really brings out the detail of Johnny's voice. His voice has a wavering emotion to it. I don't here this much on his older music. Though, I can hear it on the latest albums produced by Rick Rubin in recent years. Rock on, Johnny!
this is just like sitting in his living room and listening to him sing this song for you. no band just simple sincere singing. i was truly surprized. i listen to it everyday. tom, ps dont worry too much about my spelling. i dont due corrections. lol!

Nice nice nice. Where would I be without The Man in Black? Untouched memory of my youth and always -albeit subconsciously- on my mind.
