I've done this exact training simulator in Groton, CT, USA and yes, the drop is light and the water is warm but it's still scary as hell. I was terrified especially getting rolled upside down and having to escape the pilot's set in different situations but it was the best "pilot" training I ever had.
1st April 2009 wasnt. 16 men went 2000 ft like a stone to their deaths, RIP lads. They had no chance, but this is in the case of a controlled ditching- you do haVe a chance in this scenario
i have just done this training at this test center at Falck nutec, on my bosiet, and im glad i have done it because if you have a controled ditch i now know how to use my rebreather.
Awesome video. I dream of being an offshore helicopter pilot one day, and would love to go through this training. Especially if the waters nice and warm.
Although, I figured they would drop you in from about ten feet above the water, and have you roll at least one rotation, just to mess with your mind. If it's just like that, then I think I would do just fine!
I would do this training a hundred times over, its great! Another good course for offshore if you can get on it is the Combined firefighting and helideck training, about 6 days, lots to remember and so much fun. I wouldnt recommend going out on the piss through the duration though lads, you wont survive!
Offshore survival training is for insurance purposes only, face it a chopper 2000 ft above the ocean decides it's going to spaz out & crash in the sea, what do you think your chances of survival are, very slim NIL more like, if it's a serious rotar problem the chances are you'll get a broken neck & know nothing more about it. The majority of the time ppl survive are on a controlled decent into the ocean, it hits the water fairly hard but most of the time all onboard survive.
I agree for most bad crashes. But if spending just a few days will increase your chances of survival by just 10%, it's worth it. As you may know, the North Sea alone has several crashes a year. Most of the people on board survive. I imagine the ratio would be a lot less if you take any random bus or boat passenger and throw them in that situation.
I did my recertification today. This is sooo much fun it's not funny! I can't understand how anybody gets freaked out by this, like one of my co-workers. From the time I hit the water and this stuff starts it's like being on a Disney ride. I'm only sorry I couldn't do more! I love it when we get flipped upside-down. It's so James Bondish. Really cool stuff.
Right on man! Glad to hear someone enjoyed it like I did! I thought it was a paid vacation! Did you go through the fire training too? Where did you go for class?
I am an HUET instructor and I love that I can go underwater every time with the group, Its like free ride at the carnival every week... :)
And also men are feeling embarrassed when they see me go in as if am going for groceries and they do not want go because they are afraid.....LOVE HUET training
Heh, that's pretty cool. This class was one of the most fun I've ever had taking training for work. Although my recent close quarter combat class came in at a close second. :-)
Before this, they tell me the water used to be cold to simulate the North Sea. But now it's nice and warm. The dunk used to go faster, now it's a gentle submerging...
If you crash, you're going to get eaten by sharks anyways.
Sound so ill just have to pay atention eh? my mate failed nine times cause he could nt get in the helicopter. How long you hold your breath for? Just hope i get a job are you offshore yet?
If I remember correctly, they tell you to hold your breadth for about 10 seconds before you're supposed to unbuckle. But as you can see most ppl get out earlier than that.
Apparently some ppl freaked out so much, they added another person inside just to make sure the students wouldn't grab onto each other. As a matter of fact, during the first "dunk", they got the water up to your face only and then back down to see who got nervous.
i hated this part of the course the most. when they turn the 'chopper' upside down it's a bit of a nightmare getting out, you completely lose your bearings and it's easy for panic to set in.
To me, this course was like a paid vacation. But there were some students that were extremely upset over the water coming up slowly part. But the folks at NUTEC were professional and had plenty of divers ready to help you out in case you get stuck.
First of all it looks like it was taken at NUTEC in Dyce, aberdeen. Secondly, it didnt capsize. Thats the run you do before you do the upside down escape. And beadwacker, I did this and waited 3 years and nothing. Then did my Banking and slinging at Onsite training services in Dyce and had an interview inside a week... Rigging ticket is a good one too... Good luck..
The part that freaks most people out is when you're strapped in and they lower the capsule and the water slowly comes up. Most people would rather it be a quick dunk but they've changed that part of the class for safety reasons (hmmmm...).
I know you have to for the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. I'm not sure about other places but it's likely you do. From what the offshore folks tell me, there is a push for an international standard for offshore safety training so that you can be certified in major areas.
i did this training at warsash maritime center in the south of england. the one we used was in the dark had a lot of noise and turned upside down before they let you out.
but still it wasnt cold (although i was working in warm waters anyway) but in a real life situation they guy next to you will probably be kicking you in the face in a blind panic to save his own skin.
If I'm to learn how to make my way out of the crew cabin, I should at least experience what a landing may feel like in cold water. That surprise may cost me valuable moments.
It's no surprise really, it's the North Sea, it's cold.. if you really need to feel what it's like, stick your head into a bucket of cold water.
I'd be more worried about not having been made to breath real smoke, without a BA set in your fire escape drill (the other video you posted). This used to be a requirement and was a real trial (it takes a lot of concentration to avoid panic as you choke on the fumes.)

How much is it to do this.

I did this course in Newfoundland, Canada and I loved this part the best. The dunk tank was even shaped like a helicopter.
angelgirl2248 9 months ago
@angelgirl2248 THAT would be neat to see. I didn't think any of these places went out of their way for a helicopter shaped module.

that hardly simulates a real life crash... a real chopper wud fall much faster than that
It goes at the speed of like one of this chair lifts old people use lol

Hey iv just got mines booked is the course hard or what? what are the chance or what do they generally fail you on?
muzza6984 3 years ago
They have a pretty low failure rate. You'd have to just not pay attention and miss a lot of classes to do poorly.

The point is not to simulate a crash but to show how to egress out of a downed helicopter or aircraft once it has ditched
