They were obviously influenced by New Order to the point of ripping off this song for their sound, but to cover it in this way and ruin it is ridiculous. They've totally ruined this song, fucking canadian wankers...
Get a second opinion chaps if in future you decide to rape the back catalogues of the great and the good, get that second opinion from someone who's not a sycophantic brown nose as well. The clapping is utter, misguided bollocks.
Honestly I really like the version they did at Rock en Seine of this song. It basically just doesn't have the god awful claps, and way better sound. You might be surprised how much the claps make it sound like utter shit
I really like Arcade Fire in general but their covers are consistently horrendous. Between this and Magnetic Fields' "Born on a Train" cover, I don't know which is worse...
Makes a change to see a crap pub band do a cover of a new order song rather than the usual shit pity it's a fucking abortion though. Mind you for a bunch of guys who probably have full time jobs they seem to have pulled in maybe 20 or 30 people not bad.
God forbid a band takes a break from a grueling touring schedule and a pretty small repertoire (at the time) and plays a cover for shits and grins. I think with the other 16 songs they played that night, the audience got more than their money's worth.
Terrible. Why do these guys get so many accolades and press? Reminds me of a really, really bad Dave Matthews-ish version of what was a GREAT New Order song. Amateur hour.

Ok. I don't know whether to like Arcade Fire or not. I really try to, but half the time on Funeral, except for Rebellion Lies, I just end up thinking "well, this one sounds like Joy Division""ok, now this one sounds like Talking Heads""Oh, ok, now this one sounds like another brooding, punk artist from the early 80's. bowie?" Their influences are clear. So much so, I didn't bother buying their next album. Did they find their own sound? Or do the songs still sound like rip offs of other bands?
I like 'em enough... It just felt like before writing or recording each of the songs, they musta just finished listening to one of the bands/artists above. Wondered if they matured into their own unique sound on neon bible, or if I was gonna keep thinking "wow, this is ridiculously similar to early so and so"
@doma3333: I'm beginning to realize that we are demanding too much. I was born in '70 so, I too, feel like I've heard it all. It's really hard to come up with something completely new these days. How do you create something nobody has ever heard after Revolver, Substance, Stop Making Sense, Unforgettable Fire, Doolittle, Doppleganger or Loveless?
@skrason: You stop referencing the same sources, use your influences as inspiration and not a template, utilize and /or creatively misuse what new technology is available to you, experiment, and think about it in terms of WHAT you want to sound like not WHO...... the kinds of things the bands who wrote those albums did. The problem is that the majority of the "indie world" these days is so focused on emulating the past rather than really trying to make something new; the attitude is the issue.
Everyone has been saying that since the beginning of time. Everything has been said before, everything has been played before, yet masterpieces keep coming out.
@doma3333: *sort of continued from the last comment I posted* And for Arcade Fire's part, while their sound is heavily influenced, they push it a step beyond what any of those bands did with the orchestral/anthemic grandeur of it all and freely mix their influences; to me they never seem to borrow too heavily from one source.
And frankly when there's other bands out there like CYHSY, White Lies, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, etc., calling AF out for sounding like older stuff seems silly.
WTF is up with the THREE hand claps?? Check the original - Morris only hits the snare twice, and plays the beat around three times as fast. I totally dig Arcade Fire but this borders on travesty.
There are three emphases before the fade-out in the original, so I can see where Arcade Fire got their idea from.... but for the love of music, make them stop!
I dont think that you people understand that yes it is true to us sitting here it doesnt sound good, but the real fact is that they were there and they could feel the energy of the show.
being able to be there would have been magnificent.
Don't get me wrong, I love Arcade Fire and think they're a breath of fresh air in music today what with their creativeness... but this is horrid. Whatever they tried to do... didn't work at all. Win looks stoned :|
first of all Joy Division did the 'original' but theres few versions of them doing it because Ian killed himself before they could record it. New Order does the song in tribute to Ian.
Some of you are mixed up. You are mistaking this song with Ceremony which is a song written by Joy Division but Ian Curtis killed himself before the band could record it in studio. I thinks its okays...ot great...they were being subtle and honring the nuancy nature of the song...Covers are tough...they didn't quite make it their own as much as they were enjoying playing it .
I thought this was incredibly good, actually. I've heard their older cover from 2005 and it sounds quite different--a lot closer to the original. I thought this was nice, though; the atmosphere of the song is really intense here. I kind of like the clapping because they're stressing the right beats; those would be the snare hits in the original. But everyone to their own, I guess.
The guy to Win's right (Richard) is playing the synth melody from the original, although it's really faint.
Oh come on, Arcade Fire is a very good band. As a New Order fan, I'm glad that such a good band is covering my favourite band, it shows that New Order had an impact on future bands.
This version is fine, they played it a little differently and that's commendable; not everything always works out but I certainly respect novel interpretations. As for the clapping, I suspect the audience found it agreeable, otherwise they wouldn't have continued to clap. If it's not for the audience what's the point?
I would agree, the clapping is really fucking annoying. The original is my favorite song of all time. Most amazing thing I have ever heard. And this is a pretty good live cover of it.
I like Arcade Fire, I really do, but I suggest that everyone who've never heard the original from New Order to check it out NOW, it's beautiful. This cover is kind of annoying with the clapping and is not as refined.
I like what they did with the song. Of course they wouldn't be able to replicate it New Order style, nor should they. It was a nice break from the flow when they performed this midway-early in the set I was at.
I like this band. Age of Consent has always been one of my favourite New Order tracks so if it introduces a new generation to the song..brilliant. Check out the original though...it's sublime. No, I don't get the handclaps either but what the hell, a lot of people seem to like it and that's what counts I suppose.
I hate all the little conversations going on in the background. Why can't people just shut up during a concert? It was the exact same deal when I saw them in Chicago.
wow this is pretty bad. i am amazed at how easily people convince themselves that something is good just because they like the performer. i hate the dude to butler's immediate right, he contributes nothing to the band. i think these guys are a decent band but they are really overrated. people shit themselves over these guys. i dont get it. what is so special about them? what is unique? what is groundbreaking? it is all very formulaic and a little boring. also the claps are lame.
claps are borring, if you want an incredible cover, go on your right and watch the same song in "rock en seine"... It's incredible even if it's just a part of that song.
Beautiful :) thank you for posting this video. Really nice quality too and I almost break a tear at the end, I remember singing parts of the song. Very magical!
you're more than welcome.. i am very glad i managed to capture the entire thing myself. and i'm more than happy that the sound quality turned out so fine as well. :)
would be cool if someone made it into an mp3 and cleared the noise a little (if possible).. i'd definitely listen to it a lot.
Yow! This sux!

As for the clapping, I suspect the audience found it agreeable, otherwise they wouldn't have continued to clap. If it's not for the audience what's the point?

no offense but that bassist really LOOKS like a hooky wannabe
he doesnt play like him though

It was the exact same deal when I saw them in Chicago.

wow this is pretty bad. i am amazed at how easily people convince themselves that something is good just because they like the performer. i hate the dude to butler's immediate right, he contributes nothing to the band. i think these guys are a decent band but they are really overrated. people shit themselves over these guys. i dont get it. what is so special about them? what is unique? what is groundbreaking? it is all very formulaic and a little boring. also the claps are lame.

agree with the claps. ;)
sorry if you don't see the beauty in Arcade Fire's music, people all have different taste.
''i hate the dude to butler's immediate right, he contributes nothing to the band.''
that was totally uneccessary. wtf?
anyway.

claps are borring, if you want an incredible cover, go on your right and watch the same song in "rock en seine"... It's incredible even if it's just a part of that song.
sorry for my bad english i'm french

you're more than welcome.. i am very glad i managed to capture the entire thing myself. and i'm more than happy that the sound quality turned out so fine as well. :)
would be cool if someone made it into an mp3 and cleared the noise a little (if possible).. i'd definitely listen to it a lot.
