@KillSwitch66627 You're named after a band which does not even deserve to be referenced in the presence of Sir Loomis. These are just demonstrations of parts in the song, mainly for people who are looking into learning the song on guitar rather than for entertainment, or both.
Anyone attempting the diminished string skipping part, don't do it. You'll stretch your hand too much and turn it into a flattened pancake or something. That technique fucks up your hand and it's only something Jeff can do. I don't know how he does it but he just does.
not having a 7-string is not an excuse for not learning this solo. the only time he uses the 6th and the 7th string is in the end of the phrygian run and in the minor sweep. just improvise or figure something out based on the same scales! shut up and PLAY!
Ugh, people suggesting he plays in a screamo band... No.! death metal, sure, melodic, ect. Anything except for the genre of "screamo" Keep in mind just because they scream doesn't make it screamo.
His amazing technique is something every guitarist should aspire to, weather they play blue, metalcore, jazz, or whatever. That dude plays fucking CLEAN
All the young music listeners theese days, thinks they are experts on putting bands in genres. Its really funny and stupid. I see every band different, besides the one who try put themself in a genre on purpose. You should write music on behalf of your inspirations and personal playstyle. Bashing Jeff Loomis is without any purpose. None of the trolls on that behalf can do better than him, both on guitar and at musical success
a big finger stretch (at 3:54)? that's a bit beyond big... I have a hell of a time just barely making that on a 25.5" scale neck, never mind on 26.5" :(
@MrNeosantana because my hands are too small to comfortably make a 7 fret stretch you assume that I've 'obviously never watched Brendan Small or Paul Gilbert play'?? ...give me some of what you're smokin
@MrNeosantana no insult taken... i've seen paul gilbert play many MANY times, and i've never noticed him do stretches larger then 7 frets (near the nut end of the neck)(not saying he hasn't, but i'd love to see it, if u can provide a link) in fact, i'd love for you to show me a vid of anyone doing 8 fret stretches (again from the 4th fret or up)... Jeff Loomis is a pretty big guy, and such has pretty big hands and from this video, it looks like he'd be struggling to make an 8 fret stretch...
Yeah man also take into account that those Schecter 7 stringers have pretty big frets, i own the hellraiser and damien. That makes stretches even bigger =O
@Namnrax if you're meaning the distance bewteen them (via scale length) then I know what u mean... the neck is an inch longer overall then most guits (26.5" vs 25.5" scale)
@MrNeosantana What many call Middle Eastern flavor since Blackmore brought them on the spotlight is nothing but a Phrygian scale most of the time. It would be foolish to think that all these guys listened to any Middle Eastern music or melody during their lives ;-/ I wonder how he came up with that big stretch idea though ;) Nobody in his right mind would say "Yeah, let's just try that" :)
@Ningirsutyr I know that he probably never even heard a not from a Middle Eastern track, but nevertheless it sounds familiar to the Oud or Qanoon.
But Randy Rhoads for example played the entire solo in "Diary Of A Madman" in the Algerian Scale, But if you go to something like Maiden, It's sometimes the Augmented 5th
@MrNeosantana :O I didn't know that about Diary of a Madman! What is exactly the Algerian scale actually? :/ In any case, it's hard to translate a real Middle Eastern melody to the standard Western notation system since there is no substitution for the 2nd minors between two notes ;)
@HuberttXXX17 Honestly mate, nothing thrash about nevermore and they didnt define shit, new wave thrash like evile decapitator warpath gama bomb municiple waste are defined by the old school stuff, nevermore has nothing in common with thrash or new wave thrash WHATSOEVER, id be amazed if youd even know what thrash metal is apart from metallica..
@wakeandbakelol so what genre Nevermore is? This is Progressive Metal with thrashing. Have you ever listened to Termination Proclamation, Seed Awakening, Born, Enemies Of Reality or Obsidian Conspiracy? I don't like metallica and I don't want to talk about that. If Nevermore ain't thrash metal you know more then all the people on this planet. Tell me your secret...
@HuberttXXX17 I have no idea what genre this is and I wouldn't want to know either. You say progrssive metal with "thrashing"? you are also not adding reference points to thrashing for me to easily understand what you are talking about as I can perceive it in many ways, also I am unable to find any evidence of thrashing going on. I have listened a few times through Obsidian Conspiracy and felt it was not to my liking. and Nevermore aint thrash metal.... not now not in a million years mate.
If i had to pick one man to teach me guitar, Id pick Jeff Loomis. Because the way he explains his riffs and what hes playing makes it so shit easy to understand. the second guy id pick would probably be John Petrucci -- and im bigger fan of Patucci then Loomis. but Loomis is still the daddy
it sounds the same? every player has there favourite musical qualitys.
Loomis likes Diminished and whole tone licks, and mixes them up frequently. He also likes going up in Minor thirds for alot of his riffs like the verse riff in "Born"
@BaphometStudios I use the Jazz III's which I think are 1.3mm which I usually don't like, but they are so small, that if they weren't thick, they wouldn't move the string at all. I wish they made a XL Jazz III that was thinner. But hey we can't all get what we want...
you can express some feelings through playing blues or ballads, but you can also express anger and evilness through this kind of song. So the discussion about feeling is pointless. as long as you play it right and honestly there is always a feeling being expressed. This guy is awesome
too many players now copy this technical style, and it gets really boring. that's why i love listening to alexi and roope of COB. they have style and don't overdue the technical things
I like how some of you folks say negative comments, yet im sure most of you aren't musicians and not touring. Instead your probably at home living with your parents and try to play guitar. When I see out on the road & actually have been in the business for a decade like Jeff then you can say something. Till then practice and write some decent music
@Nameless164 I just hate to see the hundreds of kids on here who spend years running scales and at the end realize they forgot to learn how to compose a piece of music, if you dont get it thats fine, im not here to argue with people
@TheWeedbullet i wasn't trying to be disrespectful, i can play some neo-classical stuff but i haven't been practicing it for ten years so the quick answer is no..not that it has anything to do with me..i'm just commenting on the lack of variety, jeff is one of the best in the business, he'll go down in history as a great player and rightly so but he'll be remembered for his speed not his songs...music isn't about technical facility, its not a physical exercise..music is art
@Niallphillips Indeed it is and every artist has his or her own style. None of which are right nor are they wrong. Look at all the great painters. you can tell a their work apart because of the style they use just like you can identify a song Loomis has written compared to any other artist. When someone says that a composers compositions sound the same then that tells me that that composer has achieved mastery over what he does.
@TheWeedbullet mastery of one style yes but is the goal not to master the instrument?? also its not like its an inivitive original style, Malmsteen and countless others did it to death in the 80's and they copied the style from classical composers, the only difference is the drummer has a double bass pedal. wheres the creativity? wheres the experimentation? to me it just sounds like the same thing over and over, you listen to DT, you know what i mean, THATS how you write music
If you got the impression that I think im better than Jeff Loomis you need to re-read my comments. I don't he's a fucking guitar god...Dream theater?! Hahaha, I was talking about devin townsend moron. as for the personal stuff, you've never heard any of my songs and you play like a 10 year old girl with no sense of time and no pinky...your argument is invalid
@Niallphillips I kind of agree. He's a good guitarist, but his leads are pretty uncreative and his riffs (at least his older ones) are generic metal/nu-metal. "This Godless Endeavor" is among one of my favorite songs of the past decade though.

@martijnvanloffelt It's awesome, no question, but it really does sound the same as everything else he does.

@Niallphillips Can you do what he does?

@Niallphillips Sorry but Dream Theater are a terrible band. Great musicians, but they can't write music to save their lives.
And I'm sorry that you're so butthurt that Jeff Loomis is a greater musician and a greater songwriter than you.

@metalwillhatecrew
