The suits are not airtight at all. These suits are used to test various configurations of the suit. The backpacks are filled with comm equipment. This size is required for suit port docking. The astronauts flip the pack out of the way once sealed with LER and then climb inside.
Those suits don't look very airtight. I guess they don't need to be if they're just for the moon/mars, It's a nice break from the usual bulk, I guess. Why do they have the huge containers on their backs, though?
The rover reminds me of Buffalo/Bison, which in my opinion would be a badass name for it.
