I find most of the songs on this album WONDERFUL parody, but this one to me is VERY poignant. The part at the end about her and the creep she knew being shot reminds me of the Kent State shootings, though I know there really isn't a connection.
I have the original Mothers of Invention WE"RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY Lp and the song in that Reprise issue sounds different than this reissue. This song's commentary spoke volumes to us when we were in our teens. Even though the music sounds different, the lyrics remain and carry the same weight as they have some 42 years ago.
Disc 2 of the 2008 3-disc FZ CD, "Lumpy Money", contains the 1986 reissue of "We're Only In It For The Money" sourced from a digital master tape recorded on the Sony PCM-3324 multitrack recorder, and mastered by Bernie Grundman, 2008. There is also an original 1968 mono mix as part of this fully authorized collection.
The 1986 reissue reinstated all of these edited sections. However, the album's rhythm tracks had been re-recorded by different musicians. The 1995 re-release matches the original US LP with only the "Harry", "Mother People", and "Concentration Moon" edits. However, there are tape issues on some tracks.
@vinzer72frie yes.. the original has dif bass n drums.. and also has harpsichord if I remember correctly. This sounds like its from the early 80's remaster when frank added new drums and bass.
Its the original recording minus the drums and bass. He recorded new drums and bass for this album in the 80s. Personally I think the original is just perfect.
@phlizmo Was wondering what all the fuss was about but yrah, I hear it now. The kick drum has that 4k "snap" - you didn't hear that much in the 60's and before. I am fine with it myself. Wasn't like he changed the whole thing or nothin'.
I think you might like my band's new video "Schadenfreude Suite". We only recently decided to start playing jazz (it wasn't hard).
Zappa got the drums n' bass re recorded for the remastered versions.....bad mistake! Find the original.

The bass and drum tracks from the original were replaced for the reissue. The original is much better.
