Nice video, back in the day ports were a lot more interesting. Frustrating sometimes if you were on a platform with a bad one but they were much more distinct from each other and it would be fun playing other versions at your friends' houses. I was always pleased that C64 Donkey Kong had all 4 screens, funny to think there was a time when 4 screens could be a challenge to program lol.
6:28 Looks like the robots are blowing raspberries! XD
7:19 Those "graphical problems" are inherent to the Apple II line, they had no hardware sprite control, and a really screwy method of generating colors, which was totally dependent on the position of the pixels on the screen.
The goal of the keyboard room isn't to play back the notes in reverse order, it's to play them back from low to high. Each time you use it, it adds another note up to around 5-7. If you have patience and use a paper diagram to keep track of the notes, you can get unlimited passcodes.
The CPC room looks do-able. The robot freezes when you step on the platform. Wait for it to go to the right end, then use the lift in the lower left. It should stay on the far end, allowing you to search in peace.
@lurkerrekrul Go ahead and try it on an emulator. I tried it for about 10-15 times and could not do it! Jeez, this is the FIRST ROOM and it is impossible or extremly difficult to pull off. Makes you think they were in an extrem rush to get this out on the market in good time. All the other versions were fun to play, but that version was pure frustration.
You're right, it's a lot harder than the C64 version. You have to be standing in the exact center of the lifts for them to work, you need a lot more space to jump over the robots and they seem to put fast moving ones on short platforms.
I guess the designers expected you to rely on the robot snoozes.
@TheCommodore64Player I think he means the "WII" version, not the VC C64 download. There's a commercial release/remake of IM for the Wii. I don't know if it was even released in the US - I got it off eBay. May be just euro. I think it's the same as the DS and PSP versions - modernized version + classic retro version. AWESOME game, and yes, C64 version is King! :-)
No they are not, they are even there in the right order as i wrote in description. Spetrum version is between 5-6minutes and Apple between 7-8 minutes. Or do you mean they are not the "correct" versions? If so, perhaps you did not remember there was also Impossible Mission 2 for these platforms and this is not the same game as that. I uploaded in a different video the gameplay for a few versions of that game too.
Gameplaywise all these versions are pretty the same. Even the levels are the same! If you played the C64 version, then don't expect to find anything new in these other 8-bit versions.
The pitch board mini-game isn't Simon Says, nor, as this video suggests, Reverse Simon Says. The objective is to play the notes in ascending order based on pitch. You'll notice he doesn't get the confirmation of success until after hitting the highest pitch note, even though he'd already played Reverse Simon Says beforehand.
This, I think, is one of the more ingenious game mechanics (among many).
If you like such games, play Saboteur 2 on C64 and ZX128. I don't know if it was released on other platforms, but in these two there's amazing music by Rob Hubbard.
The C64 and SMS versions are superior conversions in the 8-bit class, but you have to give credit for the people that converted it to BBC Micro 32k who did an outstanding job and making it the 3rd most enjoyable 8-bit conversion. I now added my comments in the video on each version...

Ironic that the Master System version is so good as US gold based all their Master System ports on the Amstrad versions of the games.

I forgot about the "Pause" key (paws key) on this game. I wish that caught on as the standard icon for pause instead of the double-bar thing.

@lurkerrekrul I have not tried in other Amstrad emulator than WinAPE, since that one seems to do its job very well.

Is the SMS version the same as the C64 version? Or what's the difference between them?
vinheimk 2 years ago
No, there is a very big difference in sound and graphics. Just look and compare yourself: C64 version at 0.00-1.00 and SMS at 3.00-4.00.
TheCommodore64Player 2 years ago
But gameplay-wise? Is it the same version of the game, despite being differences in sound and graphics?
