Capoeira incorporates insane kicks when used in combat, everyone judges it on the " show off ability " and " how unrealistic it is compared to other martial arts ", if used in combat capoeira can be effective and also keeps the opponent guessing since the footwork and overall style is made to keep your opponent guessing
@DIEGOFNU I agree but if the roda has really high energy and you should be able to show of a bit but still have a game going so I get what your saying
Don't get mad. Just saying. I mean look at the evidence yourself with the beginning match of this video. That wasn't straight capoeira. In fact, that was nothing but straight muay thai with knees and clinches and even a takedown. Like I said, not doggin' capoeira, just saying that people who are for capoeira are putting it on a pedestal and I just want to confirm that the art is as they say it is. Any fighting art can be lethal and that is just that.
SHOW ME A CAPOEIRISTA THAT ACTUALLY IS USING IT IN HIS FIGHTS! That's all I'm saying. Because from what I've been seeing, they're just standing up doing nothing but either boxing or muay thai with a little bit of capoeira thrown in there very infrequently. Show me one who does nothing but capoeira thats able to handle people left and right. I'm not downing capoeira. I believe its a great art. But from what I've seen it hasn't been proven to be as effective as basic standup arts.
@malikanbar That's why I'm asking you to show me one. I WANT to see one. I don't want anyone downing capoeira just because they deem it as a dance. I think every martial art should have its time in the limelight. Unfortunately capoeira seems to put itself in the limelight as either a dance or a great exercise regiment. My own opinion but its practically degrading itself by how capoeristas are protraying their art. SHOW ME ONE WHO IS STILL TRUE TO THE CAPOEIRA MARTIAL ART AND NOT THE DANCE.
@malikanbar I just don't want to see this great being run-down to be known as nothing but a dance from way back when when clearly its roots are in martial arts. That's all I'm saying. Not just for me, but for everyone who bad mouths this great fighting art. I'm sick and tired of people saying that its shit. But every time someone puts up a vid.... its always a demonstration or a dance, which is great.... but its not portraying its fighting nature. Show that!
@popcornr35 I agree on that "it hasnt been proven" because its fighting has been alienated to fighting other -rival school- capoeristas in rhodas. I used to train in "AXE capoeira" wich encouraged fighting, and i could tell, the instructors where looking forward to explore it's fighting logic above looking cool on the air. I think capoeira needs to be developed and AXE capoeira is (watch?v=bwQWQ4w4Kxo&feature=related) is very serious about testing it.
@diegofnu Thanks for the clip! First time I've ever actually seen it being used in actual combat against another martial art instead of its own. Great technique all around, although I have to admit the punching is a bit lack luster. But the movement and grace adds well to his feints. Awesome use of capoeira! I sure hope they do test it, not to generally kick ass for fun but to show everyone up that capoeira isn't JUST a dance routine, but that its roots are from a martial arts background.
@popcornr35 I guess it will never be the ultimate deadly style, but it sure has a lot more to offer on the way. The guy on this video is a lousy capoerista. Look at his lack of dialog on the rhoda. Looking good and showing off is important to set a game pace, but there should also be some strategic cheekiness between the capoeristas to keep an interesting flow. That may be the reason a lot of capoeristas are not comfortable with using their techniques in fight situations: Alienation.
@diegofnu Are we referring to the clip you offered? I thought it was rather good. Certainly looks like a battle form instead of just pure representation. Any martial art, in my opinion, can be deadly. Most were invented to subdue, in essence defend, but even then they still have techniques that are meant to end someone's life. Capoeira should be no different. After all the most effective way to stop an enemy trying to take you out would be to take him out first.

@popcornr35 no i was now talking about this guy andre gusmao... As a capoerista, look at 4:12 and so... Niether of both cares much about what the other is doing. Its very comfortable when you get used to not have your space invaded by your opponent, so when sombody does (like in a real fight), you may know the moves but you wont be able to adapt them coherently.
@diegofnu Yeah, I see what you're saying. Looks very lackluster and completely incoherent towards one another. They were basically doing their own thing there. I'd like to see someone utilize this art in actual combat. I'm not expecting flips in the air and like five thousand back flips, no. I want to see an intelligent battle using capoiera. Capoiera is just like any other fighting/self-defense arts out there and I want to see it for why it was created and not for whats left of its "legacy."
i got 1 technique to get the upper hand while fighting this style.. hahaa just make the ground as dirty and discussing as you can... spit.. piss hell even take a shit...
I thought this was a break-dance battle. WTF. So you just keep moving around and confuse your opponent, hoping you connect or something? Someone explain please. Also, Royce Gracie and his grappling BS is gay, effective, but gay.
its only gay if fagots like you look at it in a homosexually desirable fashion. If you're secure about your sexuality then you shouldn't have a problem grappling. It's more effective than you think boy.
Didn't I say it was effective? Try reading. And what I meant was... If I ever get into a fight, I'm not gonna grab your waist and wrestle you to the ground until you give up. It' just guy code.
@OO00l It's called a jogo (game) and this particular jogo, they've chosen to show off rather than actually fight, so it has the *spirit* of a bboy/breakdance competition vs a kill anything with a pulse type competition. You can hurt someone (I took a meia lua de compasso to the face -- that move where you bend down and rotate and kick -- and the pain is real) but it generally goes against the spirit of the jogo.
Yeah, it's a demo, so not really fighting, I get that. I'm just baffled by all the acrobatics... It's very pretty, it looks dope... but I don't know if I'd do that in a fight. Stability, strength and balance is what I was taught. Looks tiring, too, heh heh heh.
@OO00l capoeira has more history than a simple crappy fight. It is based on a history of oppression, they hid a very deady fighting style with something that looked like a dance (they were known to kill people with this art.). This was due to slave oppression. I have a feeling your balance is nothing comapered to his (since you think you know what your talking about), and the fact you say its tiring is mockery to there ability to keep that activity up for long periods of time.
@AntiTrollable Like they say its the fighter not the art. I'd love to see a freak fighting style capoeira fighter with training in all other styles of fighting, because he has the ability to kick effectively from any postion. To say he doesnt is your ignorance bonding with your arrogance.
Capoeira is very highly under-appreciated... i train in Muay-Thai kickboxing and Capoeira. they are both very good workouts and incredible forms of self-defense. But my point is, Capoeira is looked down upon because its self-defense, but through dance. Most critics of Capoeira underestimate the skill, speed, and to the people who have mastered it, the unbelievable endurance and stamina it takes to participate...
@McMasonSauce Hi mate I agree with you that capoira takes great skill and speed, which is ironically one of the reasons that it usualy is a terrible art for self defence, becuse it takes skill and speed. Good self protection should be easy to perform.
Capoeira is a great art, great work out and I loved it when I did it, but I went elsewhere for my self protection
@McMasonSauce YES, THANK YOU! What I've been trying to say all along! Unfortunately people aren't portraying it very well to the public and that too is a key factor. Capoeira is more than a dance and its high time people start to appreciate it not only for its incredible acrobatic skillset and endurance, but rather for its martial art!
@ChadC919 It's a martial art disguised as a dance. I've seen people get hit with those spinning kicks. Much more powerfull than a punch. This art was born out of slavery. Those kicks are intended to kill.
@6batistabomb yeah let me tell yah bitches hurt!!!! omg it was awesome. me and another student where usuing our fav style so i go legit karate he sarted into a jogo and i thought jst gata keep eye contact nxt thing i kno my mouths busted up.
86niisan bro dont even come at me with that mma shit aint like these niga going to face mma is hard most of the master respect their art so they dont go around showing off on ufc on mma it great ufc+mma but to tell you the through a true master dont go around showing his skills jose aldo came to my academy to lern some skills and he was great but a true fighter dont go messing around with the art of capoeira specily when he doest know how to do it BRAZIL E NOIS
@ho0liganz you're an idiot, Anderson Silva trains Capoeira, Shogun Rua trains Capoeira, Jose Aldo does Capoeira, no, they're not going to go there and start doing flips, that's part of the DANCE of Capoeira, the FIGHT of Capoeira is different, you pick your shots if you're smart. Capoeira gives you great balance too, it's good to have it as part of your arsenal (of course you can't go in MMA with ONLY capoeira and do good, no MA can do that anymore). want to see it working? watch?v=QoyTy-VU9is
wtf?? might be the best in usa cuz he aint brazil and will never get close to a capoeira in brazil cuz we got kids who are 15 and it better then this dude
how do you know those kids are better...... did u see him do his BEST?
besides his capoeira wasnt the TOPIC... the fact that he uses capoeira in MMA and that he performs so well... thats the topic.. not how good his capoeira is cuz a kid at 15 yrs old would be knocked out in mma in 1 hit...
capoeira is not a form of martial arts... its dancing. NOBODY uses it in MMA because you would lose. Even this guy who is supposedly Capoeira influenced, do you see him flippping and doing all that frilly shit in his fight?
Well, it certainly looks ineffective, ridiculous with it's huge motions, and more like a dance than a fighting style, but I have little doubts it is extremely effective. Don't judge a book by its cover I suppose.
why do people get so pissed and defensive about their particular discipline? my only training was tkd and i have no problem admitting that there are more effective forms for an actual fight. just look around, most of this over the top stuff is useless against a good ground guy. as soon as you're on one leg (or one arm in this ridiculous case) they will rush you and take you down, at which point people like me with no ground traing are going to lose quickly. sucks but true
@whatsthebigfndeal I disagree. My training was primarily in Taekwondo and I've never had issues with people from different backgrounds, ground or stand up. It's the person, not the art
In the first fight, it looked like neither of them knew how to fight in general. Kinda reminds me of how young teenagers fight... But the other parts look pretty awesome.
The time and distance to kick someone's knee or leg out (or someone dumb enough to use their arm as a support, like in Capoeira) is shorter than the time and distance it takes someone to spin around and do cartwheel kicks. Please go back to reading about what Bruce Lee has to say about economy of motion and understand that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.
the guy in the red shorts could just have well been a kickboxer or muay thai fighter. im sure in capoeira they teach similar strikes but in that clip there was nothing that came out and screamed im going to kick your ass with my traditional capoeira
The movement is so graceful and beautiful... In my opinion hearing the people in the moment would have been better then the tracks playing. I love Ball and G and literally listen to them everyday but the songs dont fit the video.
@bhbharris898 Lateef Crowder isnt an MMA fighter. Um at least know what Lateef is all about before you sound like you have no idea what you are talking about.
Capoeira was brought to Brazil by the slaves. It was disguised as a dance because it would be forbidden for them to practice a self defense art. The dance part is used for show.
This guy may practice Capoeira (which looks like a great workout!), but in the ring he's using more Muay Thai technique. He's throwing knees out of the clinch and throwing ordinary punches.
I'm not sure what this video is trying to prove, but if it's that Capoeira technique is practical in the ring, I'm not convinced. You may as well suggest breakdancing is a great fighting technique.
@ganitywaltz it depends how serious it gets, but its usually a palm to the nose or a slap or 2 in the face / ears. A ground n pound in capoeira could mean punches, slaps, forearms and elbows!! Usually none of this would happen... you would just show the opponent that you could do it to them if you wanted to but you don't actually make it connect!
as a fighter (mma) i will use this as a cardio and flexibility work out and a few kicks but as everything else i will use just what works in the cage not the whole style
any 1 knows the name of this famous capoeria fighter he comes out in undisputed 3 and other movies dread locks and he from brazil tan color skin i wanna see his real fights. HMU THNKZ
@RUBENBRITOS Anybody who talks in simpleton absolutes shows his own ignorance. Your argument is like when 5 yr olds argue about whos dad can beat up whos dad.
@rickames yeah that's my question for this style too. it's very athletic, but in close quarter it might not be as useful as wing chun and certainly wastes a lot of energy that would pose problems for a fighter as he ages.
A capoeira tem golpes interessantes, e é boa para o desenvolvimento acrobático, como qualquer arte marcial tem golpes mortais, mas creio sozinha ser pouco efetiva contra demais artes.
@womanstanding Capoeira is different when you're actually fighting someone. You do less of La Ginga (the swaying dance stance) in the ring. La Ginga is only for what we call "Capoeira games," where we spar, but we rarely come into contact with each other. The goal of the game is to catch your opponent not guarding himself. But when you're actually in the ring, you rarely bring out La Ginga.
@ZFLOthePrince gusmao is a capoeira practitioner who cannot use capoeira in his fights beause it cant be used outside a few lucky kicks youll see on useless opponents. If you dont strike and wrestle full force in training, you arent training for fighting.
let me share my experience as an older guy (mid 30s) who's trailed for about 23 years. I spent years training in muay thai, brazilian jiu jitsu and krav maga, as if for some big brawl that NEVER CAME. I've not been in a real fight in my life (not counting stupid schoolyard and high school scraps). I'm grateful for the health and fitness benefits of martial arts, for what it's done for me as a lifestyle, the friends I've made, and the self discipline. But you guys who go on and on about
the efficacy of styles - it's pointless guys. How many of you are body guards, police officers or military? Those are pretty much all the non-thugs who need martial arts. We're in the 21st century. Be real. Most of us SHOULD be looking for which style is most fun and we'll stick with so that we can stay healthy and happy, not arguing over which fighting style will actually work best, because the chances of you ACTUALLY being in a fight is low, unless you go look for a fight.
Capoeira looks like dancing and it is partially but if u no wat ur doin it can be lethal alot of dose moves come from angles most people don't expect and can guarentee ko somebody especially da heel kicks
@mmagooabada Yeah I know silva uses Mui Tia alot of people do in mma Im talking about Capoeira which want in mma that why guy isn't using Capoeira he basicly using Mui Tia
@TheImabeast187 capoeira aint no dancing you just have to know how to put it together im proud to say that ive trained capoeira with this guy watch?v=l6oiADjOdFg
@MARASALVATRUCHA199 Im just saying it won't work in the mma theres no way the guys not using it during the match obviously he knows it work I mean Im just sayin
Just a few probs I see with Capoera if they used it in a real street fight or a cage fight with a trained fighter...
1. You waste to much energy looking fancy
2. Looks like you get dizzy with all those spins
3. They're to easy to time with all those looping kicks. All you gotta do is wait for them to throw one of those kicks duck and get under there leg and slam their ass on the ground..and if you're good at wrestling or jiu jitsu, It's game over for them.
@DangerousDan2 just a few probs you dont understand about capoeira (which is the real threat of capoeira: ppl dont understand)
1. yes u waste nrg, but you also charge yourself up. in a serious fight you dont do all fancy acrobatics, thats stuff to have fun with. when capoeira rodas get serious, you see alot less flipping around.
2.training removes weakness to inertia
3.capoeira is about trickery. "malandragem". time it right - and we lure you into a trap and slam YOUR ass into the ground.
@effep just to throw it out there, i agree with you that capoeira is about being tricky and luring people in, and is devastating towards some one who doesn't understand the rhythm of it, but on the other hand i've spent almost a year sparring with a couple capoeira guys who i'm told are good and once i picked up they rhythm of it i haven't lost a fight; I use muay thai and BJJ, and some high school wrestling, i do applaud it's style and difficulty all in all, i couldn't do it
@effep But still the way you practice is the way you preform and it seems that most of the fighters spend a lot of their time so far away from each other they would never be able to hit each other. Also I understand charging yourself up but after a certain point it does become just a huge waste of energy. I just don't understand the practicality of it. If you could explain it to me I'm more than open to new ideas. I just don't see how capoeria could be an effective fighting style.
@effep I laugh at you bro. I've yet to find a video of capoeira wining a single fight against another style. There may or may not be a few but not enough, this fighting style is a joke.
@MrArrogoth Have you ever fought/sparred with anyone who does Capoeira?? If your answer is no then you will never know how effective Capoeira is, please keep thinking its not effective for the day you think that it is not a serious fighting style and challenge someone who does Capoeira and Im not talking about a beginner.
@DangerousDan2 another falter about this art is the fact that it relies on the arms to kick....they never really go air born unless they use momentum from thir common position which is with one or two hands on the floor
Capoeira incorporates insane kicks when used in combat, everyone judges it on the " show off ability " and " how unrealistic it is compared to other martial arts ", if used in combat capoeira can be effective and also keeps the opponent guessing since the footwork and overall style is made to keep your opponent guessing

i think taekwondo is the most disrespected and made fun of form of martial arts... capoeira is a very close second.

@ho0liganz In my opinion I think aikido takes first.
wally2296 2 months ago
@jmh218 yea... youre right. all the best fighters use capoeira. EVERY single champ who was won a belt used it. wait a minute...
ho0liganz 2 months ago
@ho0liganz you're an idiot, Anderson Silva trains Capoeira, Shogun Rua trains Capoeira, Jose Aldo does Capoeira, no, they're not going to go there and start doing flips, that's part of the DANCE of Capoeira, the FIGHT of Capoeira is different, you pick your shots if you're smart. Capoeira gives you great balance too, it's good to have it as part of your arsenal (of course you can't go in MMA with ONLY capoeira and do good, no MA can do that anymore). want to see it working? watch?v=QoyTy-VU9is

wtf?? might be the best in usa cuz he aint brazil and will never get close to a capoeira in brazil cuz we got kids who are 15 and it better then this dude
felipede0107 2 months ago
@felipede0107
how do you know those kids are better...... did u see him do his BEST?
besides his capoeira wasnt the TOPIC... the fact that he uses capoeira in MMA and that he performs so well... thats the topic.. not how good his capoeira is cuz a kid at 15 yrs old would be knocked out in mma in 1 hit...
86niisan8686 2 months ago
capoeira is not a form of martial arts... its dancing. NOBODY uses it in MMA because you would lose. Even this guy who is supposedly Capoeira influenced, do you see him flippping and doing all that frilly shit in his fight?
ho0liganz 2 months ago
Well, it certainly looks ineffective, ridiculous with it's huge motions, and more like a dance than a fighting style, but I have little doubts it is extremely effective. Don't judge a book by its cover I suppose.
thunderstorm997 2 months ago
@thunderstorm997
indeed, because the opponent cant keep eyecontact, and you flip your entire body in different directions...

why do people get so pissed and defensive about their particular discipline? my only training was tkd and i have no problem admitting that there are more effective forms for an actual fight. just look around, most of this over the top stuff is useless against a good ground guy. as soon as you're on one leg (or one arm in this ridiculous case) they will rush you and take you down, at which point people like me with no ground traing are going to lose quickly. sucks but true
whatsthebigfndeal 5 months ago
@whatsthebigfndeal I disagree. My training was primarily in Taekwondo and I've never had issues with people from different backgrounds, ground or stand up. It's the person, not the art
Sevv9220 4 months ago
In the first fight, it looked like neither of them knew how to fight in general. Kinda reminds me of how young teenagers fight... But the other parts look pretty awesome.

*sigh*
The time and distance to kick someone's knee or leg out (or someone dumb enough to use their arm as a support, like in Capoeira) is shorter than the time and distance it takes someone to spin around and do cartwheel kicks. Please go back to reading about what Bruce Lee has to say about economy of motion and understand that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.

You may as well suggest breakdancing is a great fighting technique.

dogtato 6 months ago
does copoeira use any hand striking?
ganitywaltz 6 months ago
@ganitywaltz it depends how serious it gets, but its usually a palm to the nose or a slap or 2 in the face / ears. A ground n pound in capoeira could mean punches, slaps, forearms and elbows!! Usually none of this would happen... you would just show the opponent that you could do it to them if you wanted to but you don't actually make it connect!

rickames 6 months ago
@rickames yeah that's my question for this style too. it's very athletic, but in close quarter it might not be as useful as wing chun and certainly wastes a lot of energy that would pose problems for a fighter as he ages.

womanstanding 7 months ago
@womanstanding Capoeira is different when you're actually fighting someone. You do less of La Ginga (the swaying dance stance) in the ring. La Ginga is only for what we call "Capoeira games," where we spar, but we rarely come into contact with each other. The goal of the game is to catch your opponent not guarding himself. But when you're actually in the ring, you rarely bring out La Ginga.
ZFLOthePrince 4 months ago

But you guys who go on and on about
earthwalker7 7 months ago
the efficacy of styles - it's pointless guys.

Fire17y 7 months ago
Just a few probs I see with Capoera if they used it in a real street fight or a cage fight with a trained fighter...
1. You waste to much energy looking fancy
2. Looks like you get dizzy with all those spins
3. They're to easy to time with all those looping kicks. All you gotta do is wait for them to throw one of those kicks duck and get under there leg and slam their ass on the ground..and if you're good at wrestling or jiu jitsu, It's game over for them.
DangerousDan2 7 months ago
@DangerousDan2 just a few probs you dont understand about capoeira (which is the real threat of capoeira: ppl dont understand)
1. yes u waste nrg, but you also charge yourself up. in a serious fight you dont do all fancy acrobatics, thats stuff to have fun with. when capoeira rodas get serious, you see alot less flipping around.
2.training removes weakness to inertia
3.capoeira is about trickery. "malandragem". time it right - and we lure you into a trap and slam YOUR ass into the ground.
effep 7 months ago 44
@effep just to throw it out there, i agree with you that capoeira is about being tricky and luring people in, and is devastating towards some one who doesn't understand the rhythm of it, but on the other hand i've spent almost a year sparring with a couple capoeira guys who i'm told are good and once i picked up they rhythm of it i haven't lost a fight; I use muay thai and BJJ, and some high school wrestling, i do applaud it's style and difficulty all in all, i couldn't do it
Tjwheeler9008 7 months ago
@effep Sure break dancer
syyyyyke 6 months ago
@effep WHY DONT YOU MAKE A FREAKIN' VIDEO THEN TO SPREAD TEH INFLUENCE MORE!?!?
lIxIxIxIl 5 months ago
@effep But still the way you practice is the way you preform and it seems that most of the fighters spend a lot of their time so far away from each other they would never be able to hit each other. Also I understand charging yourself up but after a certain point it does become just a huge waste of energy. I just don't understand the practicality of it. If you could explain it to me I'm more than open to new ideas. I just don't see how capoeria could be an effective fighting style.
ChinkChain 5 months ago
@effep I laugh at you bro. I've yet to find a video of capoeira wining a single fight against another style. There may or may not be a few but not enough, this fighting style is a joke.
MrArrogoth 5 months ago
@MrArrogoth Have you ever fought/sparred with anyone who does Capoeira?? If your answer is no then you will never know how effective Capoeira is, please keep thinking its not effective for the day you think that it is not a serious fighting style and challenge someone who does Capoeira and Im not talking about a beginner.
