There is a romantic underlining and several hints at sexual feelings between them, especially during the beginning. I do not think that was unintentional. Homoerotic or not, it is a beautiful movie.

i think middle eastern men are more affectionate to each other compared to men of other parts of the world, cuz i notice they greet with kiss on the cheek, and on the streets they walk holding hands. fortunately not all of us are affected by the narrow minded idea of how men should behave~
