I remember this drive so well too. The last few times I stayed at Morro Bay, I drove up to Paso Robles, then went East across the desert, ultimately winding up at I-40 at Barstow somehow (would have to look at my map to say exactly) and headed East from there.
101 used to have long stretches that felt like my very own. LOL That was back in the 1960s when I used to drive up to SF and home to Long Beach.
