Sell, scianfanibagni, that's why the prince was assassinated in the movie - he was more interested in cutting profitable oil deals with the Iranians (which is what Matt Damon's character was suggesting) than in becoming a controlled client of the U.S. oil-arms program. His brother was willing to take the latter deal, so he was installed as prince after a "targeted killing."
This has many relationships to reality, in fact. That's why this is such a good movie.

Oh yea mate, we dig the oil out for you, put in barrels, ship it out for you and wayhay. You wanna trying working in an oil field sometime matey, then your be eating them words you just said.
I like this film - it shows sad and bitter truth in our political life. George Clooney always showed one and the same typical acting but Finally he looked great and not monotonous. But I still think that he didn't deserve the Oscar - just because he showed nice serious acting (for the first time by the way) doesn't mean that they should give him the Oscar. Academics and critics are as corrupted as politicians. Sad, very sad but I still love this film very much
Even though he's great in this scene, Damon's character describes a proposal that is, to put it simply, "easier said than done." The entire movie is really convoluted in order to make the average movie goer believe that what these people are saying is actually the truth. Just because somebody says big words doesn't mean they know what they are talking about.
I gotta agree to an extent. The idea that some young economist/business guy is going to have an idea for an overland oil pipeline, that will double profits but no other oil company or emir has thought of, is ludicras
I don't think the writer/director (Stephen Gaghan) did this because he is stupid, or contriving an unrealistic story. He simplified plot elements like this so that uninitiated viewers can follow/understand the movie. The greater truth of the story remains.
Build a road tunnel from Djibouti on the Horn of Africa (at the intersection of the N15 and the N16) to Mayyun and then Murad in Yemen (say about 10 kilometres). Combine that with a motorway across Yemen and Oman to the end of the peninsula between Bukha and Khasab in the UAE. Then another tunnel to Iran via Khammasi and Qushm Island (another 10 kilometres).
What you would have is a road from Africa to India. Think of the trade potential. My suggestion, lol !!
I agree the movie was convoluted but that was partly because it was showing how different people are motivated by different things. In other words each character had his or her own agenda and the net effect led to the events. For example, the Americans had to choose between the two Arab princes.
That's the real truth, not what anybody in particular says.
@patrickcorliss I didn't have a hard time understanding who was motivated by what, I was most confused by some of the minor details that were included in the film. The briefings given to Bob Barnes were more detailed than the film's identification of Barnes and his career, which made it tough for me to follow. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing, in fact it's possible that doing so was enforcing their message to the listeners by saying that their work is more important than their backgrounds.
@shahrad92122 in historical terms this was done by russia during its tenure in afghanistan between 1979 and 1989. afghanistans value to russia was always that very premise: it was about 600 miles from the straight of hormuz. which puts it practically at russias doorstep. remember: oil costs monmey to ship. afghanistans value is not as a resoource but in its proximity to resources.
@Tommy1977777 Good understanding, Americans exploit the middle east, its easy for them because they aren't drilling or making pipelines in the middle east. They have big houses, million dollar bank accounts and food they can easily get hold of, America needs to wake up to its angry bloody actions.
@shahrad92122 I would classify Iran more as north of the UAE, as opposed to East; in fact, more of Iran is Northwest of the UAE than it it is NorthEast. At the narrowest point of the Gulf, in the Strait of Hormuz, Iran could potentially take oil pipelines to Europe easier than a direct Eastern root through SA, which must deal with several other Middle Eastern countries. I am by no means an expert, however, his plan, just speaking logistically, is more than possible and logical.
issues in the world are linked to economy just look at Sudan.
lol the fact that 7% of it's oil goes to CHINA, AMericas enemy number one biggest USA wishes to starve CHINA of it oil source. First by controlling the CASPIAN (AFGHANISTAN), MIDDLE EAST (IRAQ) currently focussing on INDIA OCEAN (Trouble in PAKISTAN) and AFrica Sudan
The only lender America has is Fed Reserve and ZIonist Banking System AND it has failed. Fed reserve owns the USA Government and loans it money to do it's dirty work. US Government is a Zionist Corporation it's ceo's are a clique of private bankers. Dollars being devalued fast and they cant see another currency to back or will they bring out a NEW currency.
China needs to do alot more to beat the Fed. Reserve and Zionist BAnkers needs to buy a whole lot of oil (tangibe commodity) or gold but guess whose stopping that!!

This -- watch?v=lthLeWJPqOU&list=QL -- is my favorite clip of the director talking about the real economics of war in the middle east.
Such an awesome clip. He is really lucky to have met the people he did in researching for Syriana.

I'm assuming this country is from the UAE (most likely supposed to be something like Dubai).
Iran is to the East of UAE. So what is he talking about running a pipe from UAE through Iran to Europe? geographically doesn't make sense.

a pipeline...one around a hostile country... too expensive to build.
an alternative pipeline, thru the hostile country, cheaper to build.
so therefore, let's take over the hostile country and make lot's of money.
