  • even 27 years after this video was recorded, it has amazing sound quality.

  • The only song missing from an incredible Greatest Hits set when i saw Billy in Manchester in summer 2006...a bit gutted but hey...

  • @spalf73 that russian concert of 1987 has been released on cd 'kohuept'

  • I'd like to shake Billy Joel's hand for writing this song.

  • Way back in the day I saw him do this as a live TV concert (for some reason I am addicted to Vietnam films, stories, documentary's etc) and I was hooked for life. Innocent man is still my all time fav album (sorry cd!) ever. I play it in my car every day. Spent many a memorable time (with one extraordinary weekend in mind when I was 17) to those particular theme tunes - just please don't tell my mother as she thought I was a good girl!!! x

  • Ich glaube, Köhlers Entscheidung habe ich eben ... .

  • God bless all of those who lost their lives. While you are out celebrating this Memorial Day weekend. Please remember to what this day is all about. Remembing those who are brave tha had passed on or survived and still survives of current war.

  • This is tremendous. What an awesome and intense song...Bravo Billy Joel!

  • yeah, yeah, yeah - he sang this for his friend. Any Marine that has been on the Island knows....1sBbtn...

  • think I was there

  • I think I wasn't

  • For anyone interested, there are two songs about the Vietnam war by Australian bands that are worth a listen. Khe Sanh, by Cold Chisel and I Was Only Nineteen, by Red Gum. Both great songs.

  • @nagaslrac check out "listening wind" by the TalkingHeads

  • is that fanfare for a common man they play at the beginning?

  • It was also my first thought. Sounds very similar.

  • Fanfare for the common man, yes it is.

  • mightily for the rest of the show. After a song or two, we were being crushed by a mob of people at the stage. I guess they were waiting for someone to get things started, I dunno. I see myself and my wife in the video from time to time. There was also a guy that gives billy a flag and salutes him, he was with us. I thought it was after this song, but didnt see it on this video. This brings back a lot of good memories....thanks.

  • i was stationed in England at the time, and we made the trip down to Wembley to see this show. I wasn't a big Billy Joel fan, but he tore the place up that night. We had seats in the middle of the main floor. After every song, we'd get up and jump around and cheer. About halfway through the show, an usher came and got me and a friend. He led us up to the barrier in front of the stage. We were the only ones standing up, which was weird for me, cause we didn't do that in Detroit. We cheered

  • fabulous just fabulous. Gave my 3 year old the money to put in the box for a poppy today and spent some time trying to explain to her why! By the time we got home all she had left was the stalk and hopefully an understanding that will stay wit her forever! I am not particularly patriotic (actually not patriotic at all) but feel we should give thanks & support to those who do what we don't! - regardless of our political views.

  • kawaidonjin,

Actually the song is from his 1982 album "The Nylon Curtain". It's the last song on the A side.

In my opinion that's his best album, but it is not as famous as "The Stranger", "Innocent Man", etc.

  • What is the horn intro from?

  • That's an excerpt from a Symphony by Aaron Copeland commonly referred to as "Fanfare for the Common Man"

  • I believe it is from one of the war movies. platoon maybe full metal jacket

  • i don't think so,

  • This is a sad and reflective song. His new anti-war tune is very angry. I don't remember the name. He played it in Adelaide last week.

    Lots of heavy guitar.

  • It's not an anti-war song. Billy Joel wrote Christmas in Fallujah for all the troops in Iraq.

  • @ESB1138

No, it is a description about the service.

starts with the high hopes as Paris islands and eds up in combat, when they find out that they otehr were sharp as knives as well,

and yes, they all go DOWN together, ie they lost their illusions of a war being a walk in the park.

So, not an anti-war song, but a song that does not hide the setbacks of a soldier's life.

  • i was there 2 rows from the front and it was a great night

  • Very good. What performer he is.

  • if you can't tell from the title of the vid then i will tell you he is Billy Joel, everyone needs to know

  • I think i know its billy joel. It was a typing error i did. Cant you tell by my name that i know and love billy joel.
