What type of tuba is the tuba player using?

@iliketopmoveit I know for a fact that it's an F tuba, but the brand is possibly a Rudolf Meinl.

I vote for Rudolf Meinl because of the paddle shapes, general design, poor lacquer, and fantastic tone. John Fletcher once said Rudys had a "pungent" sound. I owned one for years, and thought that was an interesting, but accurate description.

@buffalobillh When I met Wilfried Brandstotter (tuba guy in the video) last year he had a different F tuba than the one in this video. There were three left-hand keys that moved some tuning slides, but in this video there's a rotor near his left hand. I can tell you that it's a custom-made tuba, and it wouldn't surprise me if he's using a Rudy.

It is not. Kronos has 3 keys on the left side and the keys itself are round like coins. This one has 2 on the left and the knife is just a trigger to the some notes perfect in tune.

i think it's a schagerl kronos tuba... brandstoetter developed it himself, schagerl does that sometimes... the lead trumpet was also developed by gansch, the guy playing it! two trombonists (fuessl and kiss) from mnozil brass have done that too, but they did it later, haven't got them at that concert...

Well I have to give the arranger my full compliment .From sweet to cheeky, every nuance is in there, shades of Stan Kenton and

quincy Jones and the last rockbottom note of the tuba, rubberbands strechted.

What the heck does that mean?

Look at the tuba valves, there is a little sliding gadget tensed with rubberbands,when he pulls the lever down, the slide goes up ,compensates for mistuning, look you will find it.

That "gadget" is known as a tuning slide and has nothing to do with playing a pedal tone.

But you would need it too when using all 3 (normal) valves ,you use the slide on the 3d valve(on a trumpet) when playing low C# or even lower F#. But you are right its helpful up and down the whole range. At least my writing tickeled your couriosity, I streched your elastics a bit.

He uses it cause it's 100% accurate, and goes a specific distance. Most of us tuba players while sitting will use our hands for first, third, and fourth valve tuning.
