@medcsu Cole is an odd college pick. You assume most college pitchers are going to be more developed than Cole, but I assume they picked him for what he potentially could do rather than what he can do right now.
@medcsu You have no idea what you are talking about. The guy has one of the best fastball I have ever seen and it sticks in the late innings - go away.
@TommyC503 We'll see in a few years. Having a great fastball that he has moderate control of means absolutely nothing at the major league level as every single one of those guys in the system can throw hard. Stop pretending your little league experience grants you knowledge of baseball at that level. It is fairly obvious from your comment that is as far as you went.
@TommyC503 I do know. I know by the simple fact that you base your facts on 1 pitch that he cant even control most of the time. That just reaks of 'guy who has never played past - probably high school ball". I never said he sucked, I said he was a bad pick when his teammate will prove to be a better all around PITCHER.
And as to why the Pirates would take Cole over his team mate is that his team mate has maxed out. The Pirates don't need a #4 starter they need an Ace and Cole has the "Stuff" that could make him one some day.
From what I've read from these last two posts is that you two have no idea what this kid may turn into. 98-102mph Fastball, a slider at 90-92 and a change up @89. Apparntly in 2011 he had some issues with his mechanics and was opening up to early so the pitch type was known immediatly. It also caused his Change-up and slider to come in flat. Even if you throw 102mph on every pitch, if there's little change in speed and no movement you will get hit. It just timing it up.
opponents hit .242 this year against Cole and he had a 3.5 ERA and was outpitched by his teammate Bauer and the Pirates are going to take him number one? Seriously don't get it at all.
@steelerspensdominate I was thinking that same exact thing. I've been reading about Cole though, and I guess his arsenal has been compared to Strasburg's (even though his numbers don't compare). I guess his poise is really good and they think he has the highest ceiling as far as pitchers go.
Cole's problem this season has been locating his pitches. He doesn't miss the zone that often, but he has been leaving a lot of pitches up in the zone, resulting in his less than stellar numbers.
@wb403n I hope you are right. I prefer Rendon if he wasn't hurt because my Bucs have no hitting. I'm okay with Cole I'm just confused why he's struggled so much this year.

The next Brad Penny. Bad pick by the Pirates. Should have taken Bauer as he will be better.

@lfarina21 Penny threw in the upper 90s man. When he was with Florida he was hitting 97-99 on a regular basis. He had nothing else though

In 3-4 years when the Pirates have jameson taillon and gerrit cole at the top of the rotation they're gonna be good.
