@kenshin9518 I'm not sure if he was a lefty. He kept on switching hands. Sometimes I fight like that. But my left is too weak that I'd probably get disarmed.
@Lee94503 I am unfortunately the one in black. Actually I wasn't knocked down. I just misplaced my foot and landed on my ankle. Good thing I didn't break it.
@BABBYlonian You were to offensive and not enough defense, you need to counter more! Your swings were too big, try being more compact and fighting in quick spirts.
Counter...hit...counter...hit, hit...counter...hit, hit,hit...counter. Treat it like a real fight, don't let him hit you. Treat it like a boxing match...stick and move. But your doing great, keep up the good work! Represent Filipino Martial Arts!!
Now on the other hand, you can find place on the body that are not covered by padding, usually the forearm or bicep that you can take advantage of.
I fought a guy who didn't have forearm pads and every time he swung I blasted him in that same spot and it affected him big time. It hurt him, he was hesitant and slower, it was hard for him to keep swinging after awhile.
Big shots are a waste of time and energy. You can't hurt or knock the other guy out, so stop trying. You can get about 3 to 4 more quick, flicky strikes in on the other opponents big shots. You waste a lot of energy loading up on every hit. Your never going to win by KO its always going to be about who got the most hits in. Focus on hitting more, not harder.
@Lee94503 I agree with you but I am trained to fight with full power, as if it was a fight to the death. And that's how I'll fight in a tournament. But I always get that note too from my masters: "Focus on speed". Unfortunately, I was so much of an idiot that I didn't train enough for this event so I gained about 20-30 pounds and I couldn't lose it fast enough. That's why I was slow and after fast combos I would get tired so easily. Thanks for the advice though.
@BABBYlonian Power punishes, speed kills bro ;) Great fight, keep your empty hand up as it will help with trapping and stopping a strike before it reaches max speed, just don't use it to block the stick!!
Are there tournaments in which there isn't body protection? When we do laban laro in my system we wear only gloves and head gear and I feel like it makes you respect the stick more, do you know of any competitions like that?
@PlagueInfestedCheese Best of the Best = you only fight with head gear , cup/groin protector and gloves. I think elbow pads and knee pads are allowed too. You are also allowed to take down the opponent and use the stick for grappling and submission. That's the only one I know of. It's hosted my Grandmaster Felix Roiles of the Pakamut system. I've seen the masters and grandmasters fight without any gear too.
@PlagueInfestedCheese I don't know if it happens every year. I haven't been doing eskrima coz I'm busy with college so I haven't been in contact with GM Felix Roiles. But you should be able to find his name and contact somewhere in the internet. Just call him and ask, he's a nice guy. And yes, the tournament does move around. The first time I fought it was in Stanton, CA.
its really hard to fight lefties.
