geetin away from the whole arguement above ..... i think i will focus on the PERFROMANCES!!!! i thought the luitent was brilliant !!!! not an easy song and this guy (darnell isnt it) demonstrated this song lovingly .... and mate u made those high notes seem so effortless when so many amateurs make them sound sooooooooooo strained! congrats ! i love this vid!
Thank you Jules. The point of the video was just to show a clip of myself singing for others to see it and hear it. There were white people at the audition. Both of them. That's it. They did the best they could and I think they did a damn good job considering, so please, take your politically correct speeches elsewhere, this is simply just a singing video, that's it. Relax.
It is easy to be a critic on youTube and make assumptions as to such and such and this and that and why and wherefore! The fact that the girl is not Asian is not the point of the clip. It just shows a production number from the musical and for whatever reason Liat is not Asian. I would venture a wild guess that no Asians nor Indians, Latinos and Blacks auditioned and if they did they were not suitable?!
The whole point of this musical by the way is how Westerners view Southeast Asians and how they've been taught all their lives to see "Orientals" as inferior.
Fine. If I ever meet you, I will call you as you prefer. That doesn't mean that everyone agrees with you. I would hope, however, that you are American first and "Asian" a distant second. Feel free to call me Occidental in the meantime. I find that moniker perfectly acceptable and it doesn't raise my hackles.
Thank you for that. I would just like to simply say that I am not an American but a Filipino in the Philippines. I apologize for my, perhaps, over-sensitivity on this issue but we've had 300 years of Spanish Oppression and 50 years of American reeducation... So please understand when I and many of my fellow Asians take words like Oriental as subvervient and degredating. It would not offend you to be called Occidental because it does not have a belittling and objectifying undertones.
Your handle identifier indicated you were American. Perhaps you should change the flag to the Philippines about which I'm sure you're proud. By the way, don't forget about your country's most horrific occupation, that of the Japanese devils (circa 1941-1945) and how the Americans suffered their atrocities along with your parents, grandparents and fellow countrymen and women. Selamat po for the education.
The boy's got a cherubic face, he's quite a hottie and he has a great voice. Bravo! But, uh, besides not being Asian, isn't Liat a bit more, ummm, voluptuous than a poor skinny native should be? ;)
Vatonorteno...you've said this on several videos. Maybe an Asian girl didn't audition for the role. Does this little 'thing' really take away the beauty of the song?
I haven't said this regarding any other video. The fact is that ethnic roles should be played by those of that ethnicity. You're probably not old enough to remember films or stage works where European-Americans routinely played Indians, Orientals, Mexicans, blacks etc. Fortunately, we've gotten away from that. I would have encouraged a broader audition.
Oriental is a perfectly acceptable moniker with no derogatory implication in the same manner that those from the west are Occidentals. I don't think that all those from Asia demand to be called Asian, i.e., Russians, Indians, Turks, etc. The definition is far too broad. Oriental refers specifically to those from Eastern Asia. This is rooted in history and fact.
He's very good looking
