Where is it coming from? Are they serious! Hello! It's called Japan! Think about it people. The size of their country vs people living there. Then look at the ocean current and where does that current flow. Bingo. China is no prize either.
Well I'd like to see some photos of this mythical "garbage patch the size of texas". You'd think that would be pretty easy to spot, especially from the air and film... yet I have not seen one picture of it or film. This video, like many others, claim that "scientists find the great pacific garbage patch" but like all the other videos, I don't see any actual film of it. Just a few pieces of garbage off the beach or ocean. Sounds like one big myth to me.
@40colby That's because the plastic photodegrades into tiny pieces that can hardly be seen, and is about 10 m down from the surface. The plastic absorbs the toxins from the ocean, and then fish eat that. It's not a myth, it's a huge problem. Enjoy your fish next time you eat it.
Ocean Voyage Institute is making a HUGE effort to clean up this mess. They are currently raising funds to go the North Pacific Gyre this summer with a team of volunteers to collect the plastic and trash that has accumulated there, as well as researching environmentally friendly ways to dispose of it. Please help save our oceans and the wildlife that live there by googling “dream sail raffle” and visiting our website, as well as posting it on your pages!
I wouldn't freak out about this problem, since it has been around for a while now. I would however; watch this video anyway and make a conscious effort to recycle trash and stop littering. This is our only planet to live on, we really need to learn how to live on it the right way, and get along.
It's obvious how those trash got onto the Pacific Ocean. People litter the ocean as if its land. Now it's stirring up some attention after decades of unnoticed piling clutter. A group of scientists at University of Cali is researching how it all got there? WTF, like as if they are the first to notice about this shit.
Sadly, when everything of any worth, animal vegetable or mineral or combination thereof has been ruined - there will be nothing left for whatever mankind is left to kill or mess up......
i'm just saying that stuff from sunken boats which are usually fishing or shipping boats could explain rubber boots ans stuff there. i didn't say it was all from there ass hole. also if you didn't know on avarage tons of decomissioned boats are sank into the ocaen all the time to make manmade reefs and are filled with stuff from elementry-high schools.
You a re a buffoon. Please do not bring nationality into the discussion, as you are obviously under the mistaken impression that the US educational system is superior to the rest of the world's.
Am I the only one that saw that there was life taking hold on all that junk? Don't get me wrong, I am disgusted by how people litter everywhere, but muscles and crabs were living on that patch. Seems to me life is taking hold.
hmmmm probably from people so consumed in their own lives and not giving a shit about the environment like so many commericals and PSA would have you think lol
What this basically means is that our Governments are deciding to dump
our garbage in the sea because landfills are overflowing. There's no 'mystery'
here. The trick is to catch them in the act. Sad, but this is the legacy we leave
for our generation and generations to follow...that is if we're still here. = [

The patch has been there for a very long time. They didn't discover anything.
There are a few docs on the patch.

Ecologists have known about it since at least the 80s, so yeah, not really a discovery. It got a lot more attention since the late 90s, though.
