He has worked since he was 16 and always liked working, but today he has taken on a give up attitude, the FIRST in his life. My white-haired father was out of work from 2003 until 2006. In his case, it completely demolished his confidence. Eventually, he just quite trying to get jobs and tried to make due working part-time at a tuxedo rental shop and doing handy-man work with severe arthritis and a bad back. It was literally only the nagging of my mother that had him putting in for any jobs, and eventually he actually got a job that he was least qualified for, something completely out of his field.

Losing my job showed me just who my wife exactly is. After providing for her for years and suddenly not being able to she became intolerable to be around. She had no clue what was going on in the country (she is a foreigner) and refused to look for work herself when I said I would watch the kids. When I started playing basketball with a friend to keep my morale up, she went apeshit and became abusive physically and mentally. I didn't want to sit inside all day watching her on the computer.

yeah joblessnesss definitely affects people, my uncle lost his coal minin' job, he went on unemployment insurance until he found a new job, well my aunt instead of supportin' him and standin' by him, divorced him,....my uncle's not lazy, he soon got a job as a ranch foreman and after some odd years at that, he got a job as a gardener,...so losin' your job isn't really down in the dumps, it depends on how you view your life and existin' opportunities. I married into a family of Home Builders. They became very successful in the 90's and after 2008 were all broke in 2 years. My wife's father and uncles have lost everything just as they're reaching retirement age. One of them shot himself a couple months ago. Unemployment affects people in different ways....it depends on the person.....I know people who were unemployed and they were always going "woe is me I have no job, take pity on me, etc, etc" where as there were people who I knew were unemployed and said stuff like "I'm going out and getting a job." It all depneds on the person and how much drive or determination they have.

I remember the recession of 91-92. My dad was laid off for well over a year. Well, maybe more. For kids seeing their father laid off is alright. Especially if your dad was such a workaholic that he never really came home. Home was just a place to have your beer and your bed.

But when my dad was laid off for those years, it was really the happiest in my life. He was home.
