  • Her voice haunts me,

  • She's a good musician

  • NO ONE could like that scum

  • She is my beloved princess of Darkness

  • ugggh! This song hurts my ears. Can't stand that screeching part...This is the only PJ Harvey song I HATE

  • I think that we should give all these comments 666 thumbs up

  • oohhh oohhhhh oooo ooooo

  • Wow, this is so great...and all the while this fantastic piece of music is in the air there are the pigeonholers down below there bickering about who the best singer is! Can ya believe it? What a waste of time. Anyway, there is no best singer!

  • holy fuck that was amazing

  • I love how she wails the introduction, as if crying out with the force of the emotion that the song portrays..and I want that dress!!

  • I am gonna puke about this "who is the better singer" posts... Its not about being better.. everyone is differient.. the little imperferctions and the thousand little improvisations make it really special. Make it unqiue. Make it really perfekt. And its for everyone different. Just enjoy the few great artists that are left.

  • This is like Radiohead's Reckoner x15. This is the best thing I have ever seen/heard on You Tube.

  • Love her, she can move the dead!

  • i absolutely love this,it's easy to see how Nick Cave had his heart broken by this wonderful lady,Polly you're a heartbreaker!!

  • She is great indeed but not the greatest singer of the last 20yrs.. the Portishead singer, the Massy Star singer, Bjork, Eva Cassidy are all super great singers! Very unique voices!

  • So is Polly I guess.

  • BJjork and Sinead are better singers by far. Now, Hope Sandoval Is awesome in her own right. She can`t hold a candlde to PJ. PJ does everything. She`s the boss!

  • she's amazing

    a really inspiring artist

  • The best singer of the last twenty years in my view. xx

  • Holly Jean Harvey I love u I love u ! U r my Queen forever !

  • very cool. sweet dress and hair. great sound too.

  • Methinks the lady(jun7per)doth protest too much!!!

  • Err.. What manipulation ??? you should vomit and take a deep breath at the same time, hey that's rocknroll.

  • INCREIBLEEEEEEE

  • has anyone read leo tolstoy's "the devil"? this song is written word to word to that book

  • I've heard that it's based on several different stories, all of which I have yet to check out. I definitely need to because this is probably my favorite PJ Harvey song and the origin of it would be greatly appreciated.

  • sheer perfection

  • I will see her this monday!!!

  • for me only pj harvey and björk have such good voices that its unbelievable :)

  • de TUS oidos...

  • she is divine devil.

pure, playfull and one just loves her!

  • És la millor. El rock té un futur i es diu p.j. harvey

  • tu forma de componer y cantar es extraodinaria

tu sentimiento y melancolía es maravillosa

  • I was there, and its the first time I've experienced chills at a gig.

    She's so striking, so pure.

  • jeez, it says she is 38 on wikipedia, but she lloks like she is in her twenties. i love her.

  • PJ is either an elf or some divine being :)

  • pj harvey and bjork are the best singer ever (I can't compare them)

  • she's a goddess. Unvelievable..

  • pj harvey espectacularmente melancolica,lo mejor de ella es este disco...gracias pj

  • SIMPLY: She's fucking awesome!

  • eargasm

  • Perfect, perfect, perfect !!!!!!

  • You probably are better than her, you just don't know it yet.

  • are you talking to me?

  • Man, she should really sing that intro an octave lower, the register that comes through on the recording. that high one is rough. otherwise, everything's awesome.

  • I get what you're saying, but then again, she might have done this on purpose. She has a long history of being purposefully discordant, vocally. In other words, sometimes she intends to sound "ugly" or stretched beyond her limits, to create an emotional response from the listener, i.e., shock, surprise, confusion, irritation, etc. After all, this is a woman who grew up listening to Trout Mask Replica at the dinner table! She's not always aspiring to sound "pretty",i.e., Taut, City of No Sun.

  • I think youre both overanalyzing. Chill. It sounds awesome I think. You like it or you dont. Sometimes its great to defy traditions or expectations of what is..acceptable, digestable, etc.

  • all hail the goddess innanna

  • I envy her writing abilities. Her talent cannot be described with words. Her poetry, her music, and her genuine emotion that exists in all of her songs are touching. Her talent is what defines her beauty...5* Sigh.

  • it's true! I find her genious!

  • i feel the same way :D

  • Amen to that, she's on a different level to just about everyone else. Thom York is about the only other British artist I feel is on her level. Polly is a living legend!

  • White Chalk drags me back to the dark side...Polly, what are you doing to us?

  • i remember popping in her tapes 2 Drive my mother crazy..hehe childlike laughs rfun...luvPJ, musical versatility galore

  • I wish I was her... Her talent, the way she looks, that voice...

  • y not wish to be better than her hahahhaa

  • why not wish to find the beauty in yourself

  • God bless you PJ, you have changed my life once again, a birth, a death, another of your albums.

  • Yep, excellent again. It's getting almost predictably boring now Polly ;-)

  • oh brilliant as usual

  • Magnifique !

  • I like your sleeves...

  • I love it!

Reminds me of music from the Peter Greenaway film, 'The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover'

  • anyway, she will become the mother of my children; PJ I LOVE YOU!! WILL YOU MARRIE ME SOME DAY?!!

  • Well, just for the sake of research I've just gone and listened to Amy W singing Love is a Losing Game. Not my cup of tea, that jazzy singing, and I really can't think why anyone would even come up with the idea of comparing her to Polly???

  • Well thank god she's back to her old ways i don't like her safer albums stories from the city and uh huh her, this is what she does best and leave Amy whinehouse alone guys!!

  • this entire album is sublime . . . to the core she delves expressing the real truth.

  • oh - my - god. what a voice!!! i love her! i love her at the piano!

  • her on a bass, her on a guitar, her on a piano... i'm not sure how i love her more :D

  • She sounds like a Banshee,in a good entoxicating way.

  • the lyrics of this new album really hum hit a chord, it's so sad and depressing

  • oh my god. this album is pj´s best ever. I only hear once every song and i loved each of them. polly you are amazing

  • Wow! Her voice is astonishing. The way she sings it at the very beginning of the song gives me shivers. It's even better than the album version. Viva PJH!!!

  • the thing about her is that everything she performs live sounds better than the studio versions. <3

  • This song is haunting

  • PJ is the Goddess of Rock N Roll!

She is the definition of what Girl Power is.

&PLZSTFU about Amy Wino-2dollar~cock-whore... that sold out cunt couldn't play a f***ing whole concert by her mono toned self anyways.

  • You go Polly!

  • i have no idea how she hits those notes. amazing.

  • By the way, the Back to Black riff is just a standard motown riff. The piano on this song has a chugging beat to it sure, but this song cannot be called motown lol.

  • Wow, definity, PJ is amazing!!

  • Since we are on the trite subject of comparing artists, check out Diamanda Galas. You may feel differently about Amy Winehouse after you do.

PJ Harvey id amazing and beyond comparison.

  • Wouldn't it be the funniest thing to hear Diamanda sing Rehab?? XD

  • I bought a Diamanda Galas album once.Wot a load of tripe! I played it one time but not two time.

  • anyone know the lyrics?

  • PJ surprises, always evolves and again brings us new sounds... these are hard to describe you need to listen with all your senses open... and take her voice and the music into you.

  • PJ Harvey > Amy Winehouse

Anyways, "The Devil" shits all over "Back To Black".

  • PJ is awesome, and her body of work is large and consistently excellent. But I'm sorry to say, Winehouse DEFINITELY has a better voice. I love PJ's voice too, but Amy is a freak.

  • Sure, Amy Winehouse has a nice bluesy-throwback voice, but it's certainly not unique. Not much range either. Jesus, this is like comparing a pond to the ocean. PJ is a one-woman tsunami of brilliance.

  • Good comment, saves me the trouble of responding to NOMIND (mmm, wonder if that means something?

  • sometimes I forget that morons listen to Polly Jean, too.

  • You bucket of... well, I would guess that the "morons" that listen to Polly are more sophisticated than the morons that listen to winehouse, avril latrine, britney,j.simpson, etc. Any "moron" can be famous today, but Polly deserves more fame and recognition than any of the aforementioned "morons", yet she still shuns it. That's because she "keeps it real" and is in it for the art, not to be some fuckin' sound bite.

  • Are you out of your fucking mind? How can you compare Winehouse to Avril, Brittney, Jessica...!?!?! If you think there is ANY relationship between Amy and those bubblegum-pop botched abortion cases, you obviously have shit in your ears. Do you know ANYTHING about music? Listen to the YouTube clips of Amy doing "Teach Me Tonight" and the version of "Love Is A Losing Game" where it is just her in a dark studio with a leather jacket on... If you can't recognize the talent there I pity you.

  • pj harvey is so much better than amy winehouse that it's laughable. seriously, pj can play like any instrument ever while amy smokes crack and beats up her husband. please, get over yourself and be a musician not a tabloid star, amy.

pj harvey is beautiful. amy winehouse is worthless. plus, she has the weirdest looking face in the world.

all of winehouse's songs sound the exact same and pj is one of the most diverse musicians, she has played like every genre.

  • did someone seriously fucking compare amy winehouse to pj harvey? they don't even breathe the same oxygen.

  • Who is Amy Winehouse?

  • right on

  • thx for making this clear. pj and amy arent even near enough to be compared, its like comparing a stone to the kreml

  • Why people keep always trying to compare Polly with something all the time, she's unique and White Chalk is one o'her best records, so diferent than everything she's ever done. Which other artist after that make a garage rock record comes out with a folksy piano album?

  • Yeah, why is everyone always comparing PJH to this, that, or the other? Polly is beyond comparison, she is a true original and there aren't many of those left. So don't even bother with comparing PJ to all those vapid and insipid (let's not forget shallow) "STARS" of today because "it ain't never gonna happen". There's no comparison.

  • Pjs far more talented than that drunken mess

  • i noticed it too, it's obvious in the beginning of the song. I guess PJ didn't do it on purpose and she maybe wrote the song before amy released her Back To Black

  • Did any of you ever consider the fact that Windhouse could've ripped off PJ? I've been listening to PJ since she started way back in '92 and I've heard her sing this way before.(Listen to the end of "The Whores Hustle..."-and others). How long has that windhouse been at it? Maybe windhouse has been influenced by Miss Polly? Just a thought (if she has, would she admit it?).

  • Sure Amy probably was influenced by PJ. But they are in totally different genres. Amy is a soul/jazz/R&B singer, while PJ is rock/folk/experimental. If Amy ripped off anyone it is Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, maybe a hint of Janis Joplin... Again, I'd like to reiterate that I love PJ, she's great. But in terms of her technical singing abilities, she can't touch Amy. Amy is a virtuoso, a prodigy. Not to hard to see if you know the first thing about music.

  • You called Amy a prodigy after you gave a list of artists she has ripped off? I believe that PJ's range and ability far exceeds Amy's, especially live. Her voice can soar in so many directions and styles. She can sing like an angel, she can sing like a whore. She can sing with humour and she can sing with beautiful fragility.

Amy sounds the same on every song I've heard her do. She is too much of a throwback, theres no originality about her and shes never really stretched her voice.

  • Difficult to disagree with a single point there. Facts I think theyre called. Come back in 10 years guys and ask how Amy Wino is doing.

  • Amy also ripped off Beth Gibbons (Portishead) - that's who I thought of anyhow, when I heard "You Know That I'm No Good" for the first time. My girlfriend actually listened to the song and said, "If I hadn't heard Portishead I would have thought she was amazing."

Comparing PJ to Amy is like comparing The Beatles to Justin Timberlake.

  • Actually, I wish I could edit that to say "Comparing PJ to Amy is like comparing The Beatles to Madonna." Madonna is someone who has truly ripped off anything and everything under the sun and wouldn't know an original thought if it fell out of the sky and slapped her around for half an hour.

  • but in her defense, what HASNT droped out of the sky and smacked madonna around for at least a half hour?

  • I've been listening to portishead since'94 and I like Amy Winehouse. Point being I see no similarities between the two artist. Did you hear them both in the same day? Are you cramming?

  • I agree.

  • it is not the same! clear your ears dudes and girls. sure it has the same rhythm, but the chords are different.

  • Yeah, it's just you.

  • Oh my God, no it's not just you!

It took me a while, but I hear it now! :-|

  • This song was before back To Black my friend. At your name I can see that you're a fan of Björk. *shes my hero* Hope you saw or will see her live!! :)

  • there's no falsetto wailing on the album version :/

  • OMG PJ YOU FUCKING ROCK!!!

  • dont expect any rock n roll on this album. if you like this (as i do) you will love it. No "Who he Fuck" and very deep songs.

  • sent chills up my spine

  • fucking hell, thats fuckin ethereal, didnt expect that at all. beautiful falsetto.

  • unbelievably beautiful... can't wait for white chalk...

  • oh, we've got some high notes here.

  • Polly is a fucking angel!

I love this song very much. I can't wait to see her and listen to the new album!

  • my loveeeeeeeeee

  • September, everybody! I'm expecting a lot from this new album, it'll be spectacular!

  • Polly is one of the few artists who makes me afraid for them when they sing- especially live- only Tori really springs to mind

  • How so?

  • wow wow wow i CANT WAIT FOR THE NEW ALBUM amazing song..... it really does send shivers down the spine.... it posseses so much tension in it, fabulous.

  • That falsetto sends shivers down your spine-her voice was, absolutely,on top form.

  • Wow that was amazing!

  • Love!

  • holey fuck!

  • I'm still nervous of how it's going to be (next album), but this one gives me hope. The other new songs I'm not totally convinced of yet.

ps: her cute turn back to the crowd smile at the end chuckles me up.

  • Wow!!! I was really affraid how the new stuff was going to sound, but this is just phenomenal!!! PJ constantly keeps surprising me in the best way. I adore her. The new album is going to be brilliant.

  • omg i didn't know Polly could sing that high

    i love it

can't wait for the new album

  • I thought it was an ace song .. =D

  • When she sings "Help! Help!" ... hmmm ..i've got shivers!

  • New stuff sounded great.

  • omg. (in a good way)

  • are you kidding me...? what is she doing with her voice...? whoaaa...

  • That is fucking phenomonal!......Thanks Aqua!
