Ascoltando questo capolavoro mi riesce proprio difficile dire che i Genesis non sono stati più loro dopo l'abbandono di Peter Gabriel . Molti la pensano così ma sbagliano alla grande!
i am 54 now and have loved Genesis since i was about 17. This particular track always makes me emotional, don't know why but it has always stuck in my mind. Just brilliant. A masterpiece.
phil just sings this (very very well) but the lyrics were written by mike and the music by tony, the only 2 to perform on every genesis song, all of the band past and present have agreed that (tongue in cheek) Genesis was tony's solo project.

I dedicate this song to my beautiful mom. She was the most generous, gorgeous, classy, gentle, giving, strong & kind person I've EVER had the pleasure of knowing, and not because she was my mom. Everyone who met her, called her "mom". How I miss that beautiful face, and as she got older, she disliked her wrinkles, but laughed, and I hope I can only be as strong & wonderful as her. Thank you Genesis for creating this beautiful song. We had tickets, but she's gone in flesh, and I miss her.
@MiKriya God Bless You, I Love My Mother the Same and was very touched by your post... Your mother was an amazing person and blessing to this earth I am sure who touched many hearts... Christ's Love To You,,,
I have nothing against Phil's voice. In fact i think it's brilliant. It's just that, over time, he's added all these "you know the"s and "yes, and now"s and that sort of becomes a little too cheesy for me... Nevertheless, great performance!
I love this song. One on my many Fav's. But I have to say, Phil's voice is getting better w/ age. He sang this song w/ passion and depth. I had tickets, but couldn't go, and I'm so glad you posted this. I just don't believe there is another band better. Close of course, but not better. JMO

Damn , that's good . Spent this evening looking through the years of Genesis , Phils voice has altered with age but not in a bad way he still carries tone passion and world uniting quality , at last an English export to be proud of .
Sounds cheesy but .. We all owe the guys thanks for a song for each emotion we have be it joy sorrow or when we need inspiration . If you get chance have a look at " carpet crawler s" the early live version and hear the clarity and sensitivity of a truly beau
Outstanding! Listened to this song in the early 80's when no one heard of it... Great job boys keeping it alive. Goosebumps still, after almost 30 years!
Softly spoken, carefully guarded secrets are herein told... but there's hope.
Flowers push forth from the garden... Glistening in morning dew, bursting with beauty... Slowly the petals unfold, and bloom so bright... and finally they fall to the ground...
But Mad Man Moon always rises, and overnight the Garden takes back her daughters to be born anew... This is the cycle of life. THE RIPPLES DO COME BACK.
I'll never forgive myself for not seeing them during their reunion tour!
I was only a student and thought the tickets too expensive. I've regretted my decision ever since, especially when watching fantastic performances like this.
greg rolie leaving santana to start journey, frank zappa auditioning drummers to replace chester thompson, darrell stuermer finishing his work with jean-luc-ponty to begin a career with genesis, and then peter standing still thinking, "now what"...
I was so disappointed this tour except for this. They should have a show for all the Genesis pre 1980 music & a show for Genesis post 1980 music then you'd (I'D HEAR!!!) hear more of that amazing old stuff & No "In the Cage" retire that one boys!
this just shows how professional they still are. even after all these years and after phil's voice has changed, they still can make this song beautiful!

I once touched Collins' left shoulder blade at a gig in Cornwall. There was a boil on it, which I burst, and it stained his shirt. Mike Rutherford mopped it with a handy-andy, which Banks then pocketed.
Talking about the arrangements of the song, I think it's great team work. Phils voice is touching, and the music is wonderful, this is the kind of son that can take a tear out of me and although it was written by Tony and Mike, it always sounded to me like a "Steve Hackett" song, reminds me of "The Lovers" or "Hands of the Priestess"
I completely disagree.. That fantastic guitar solo you are hearing wouldn't sound quite the same without the synth harmonies. I also think the volumes accompanying the instrumentation are perfect. A masterpeice and nothing less.
Besides Daryl respected Steve's solo this time. Not that he "disrespects" Hackett's work, what I mean that it really sounds like good old Steve were there.
It was arranged that way. Open your ears & mind, the guitar can be heard just fine. There are many songs that feature just Daryl or Steve. I real Genesis fan would not have such a silly complaint. "Shut up Tony"? Try - SHUT UP ELUSIVEBIRDMAN! That would help us all. Just say you don't care for the complete instrumentation of the tune.
When I was 15 years old, I had this song played as the last song at Summer Camp, rather than the old stand by 'Stairway to Heaven'. I am almost 45 now and STILL this remains the most hauntingly beautiful, meaningful, touching song. I cry every time I hear it. 30 Years later, much has changed yet much remains the same.
I want to cry every time I hear this song... It's painfully beautiful. Genesis was on some other spiritual plane when they made 'The Tail'. Peace. Ben

Marching to the promised land
Where the honey flows and takes you by the hand,
Pulls you down on your knees,
While youre down a pool appears.
The face in the water looks up,
And she shakes her head as if to say
That its the last time youll look like today.
Pure lyrical genius. Is there another band out there that gives such a complete live experience as Genesis? Probably not. Simply brilliant
