a class alone forever known never grown to the point of no return. let the music ring so we can sing us back from time to time. who today could play free bird as rossington and collins did? who can light up a stage in his bare feet like ronnie? in all my seventies memories of friends and family many now gone, they as well as lynyrd skynyrd are as close as a song and a recollection. enjoy the music
When I listen to music I try and block out the lyrics, I just listen to the guitar, bass, drums, and piano. But Ronnie had some of the greatst lyrics, he was way ahead of his time. One of the greatest singers of all time, so underated. It is unreal to think of all the good songs they wrote in 4 years, and to have their their careers end at their peak, is in my opnion, the sadest thing on Gods green earth. Fly on Freebirds you are free at last
SAW THE ORIGINAL BAND TWICE THE FIRST TIME IN THE BOSTON GARDEN AS A BACK UP BAND TO TEN YEARS AFTER...THE BOYS BLEW ALVIN LEE AND COMPANY OFF THE FUCKING STAGE.....THE SECOND TIME WAS A GREAT SHOW SKYNYRD...OUTLAWS.....INCREDIBLE...

This incredible song just rips my heart out and reduces me to tears everytime I hear it. Truely such a beautiful and very dear heartfelt melody ! Just knowing the history and trajedy deeply affects me , but us southern bells are so sensitive anyway ! Love you Skynyrd !
A concrete jungle surrounded me , Many nights I slept out in the streets. I miss old friends that I once had , Times aint changed and I'll be glad when I go Home !
if this tune cant jerk at you i dont know what can i worked away from home for years and i would drive 6--8 hrs straight to this song made my trip so much shorter thinking of my wife and boys af home-- but it did cost me a few speedind tix haha
Everytime I hear this song I hear crackles from the album.....spent time overseas for my beloved Corps and always played this on my way HOME. North or South...doesnt matter...Lynyrd Skynyrd always touched a cord with people. me.
There are so many solo artists; you don't see many bands at all these days, and the ones you do see have fewer members. It's all part of the psycological shift towards selfishness and individualism; same reason so many kids these days have messed up "unique" names. Wish I grew up in the 70s.
this is the song i will play for my son when he gets home from dployment oversea's! I want to say thank you to Freebird for dedicating this song to my son when they played at P.I.R. Long live Lynrd Skynyrd

@kas1283 it makes me evious being young, I wish i grew up in the 50's/60's, things like music were so much more pure, sad to say that ole fasioned is dead :(
@kas1283 I know its been months since you commented, but I had to say this. My son is now 17 and plays guitars...just like me. He loves Skynyrd. It was his first live show in 2005. He comments ALL the time how lucky we were to grow up in the 70's and 80's and what a more simple time it was then. God Bless all of you out there that keep the Free Bird flying and the dream alive......The 1% band.

@1961slam i snuck this song in on a freeplay friday at the radio station i work at and the phones lit up asking me who it was and where they could find it. I was shocked at the number of people that had no clue.

The tears start to roll when I hear "I miss old friends that I once had , times ain't changed and I'll be glad when I go home:........ R.I.P Jack
@stonelake1 probably a "lady gaga fan"! so AWESOME that these guys really DID sing & play music without having their voices autotuned....just reminds me why today's "music" SUCKS.
Ronnie wasn't racist at all. The whole reason he was mad about the Neil Young thing was because Young was saying that all people in the south were racist and Ronnie took offense to that because he wasn't racist. Ronnie also said publically he didn't like George Wallace because Wallace was for segregation.
"In Birmingham that love the govenor BOO BOO BOO!"- Ronnie Van Zant
People need to get there facts straight befor they start saying someone is a racist.. esspecially a dead man.
Ronnie was not a racist.....!!!! He was a genuine, loving, giving, compassionate, and excellent song writer... never have i seen a man come up with such beautiful lyrics... what a great man!!!!!
The Eagles, Kansas, Areosmith, Boston, The Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Van Halen, KISS, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Cars, The Beach Boys, Grand Funk Railroad, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Crosby Stills and Nash, The Allman Brothers Band, Journey, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Alice Cooper, The Jimi Hendrix Experience,Styx,ZZTop,The Stooges,The New York Dolls,The Ramones,Red Hot Chili Peppers,Kings of Leon,Metallica, Bon Jovi,Pearl Jam,Guns N Roses,Nirvana

I believe LS Ronnie for sure would party with you. My 2 oldest sisters said they all partied at a local hotel. Wasnt a girlfriend kinda thing just a big party everytime they came thru town. I was thinking ya right you partied with Ronnie. Come to find out most people here there age did.The hotal was closed a good many nights cause thing got out of control. Had to be some wild times i missed. lol
There are very few individuals who "opened up" for the Who... Ronnie was one of them... life's too short to be in such a "narrow" state of mind. I'm sure that Ronnie would agree. He left a huge "gap" to fill... and few will...
Mr porsche- I knew that. I always get it mixed up with when I saw them. I stand corrected.

Don't know why 'MCA' waited til "the best of" was out to release this song , it was a damn good ballad. It was one of their first.

There are very few individuals who "opened up" for the Who... Ronnie was one of them... life's too short to be in such a "narrow" state of mind. I'm sure that Ronnie would agree. He left a huge "gap" to fill... and few will...

Ronnie even said himself he was not a racist he was just an old country boy
