This song brings me back memories. The first time that I heard this song was when I recorded it in an 8 track tape from a radio station in 1977. I was 14 years old and I started to listen to rock music. I like it.
The old proto-recording had much more depth, warmth and essentially the drums didn't sound programmed and over produced and the guitars didn't have that digitised
chorus - What happened? You wouldn't remaster Cream or Hendrix to this extent so why over polish the beauty of the original? I still have my 1972 cassette and despite the magnetic phasing on Snappy Kakki, still sounds better.
This was one of three 8 tracks I took with me on a road trip in 1977 out west. It brings back memories of driving through the deserts of west Texas and New Mexico. Incredible!! Perfect sound track for the landscape. The other 2 tapes were Charlie Daniels "Fire on the Mountain" and "Waiting for Columbus" by Little Feat. Best 2 weeks of my life so far.
I will always associate this album with my brother. He was the greatest musical influence on me. He got me into ZZ Top. He's been dead for decades now, but hearing this makes me miss him and remember when I was a kid...
i agree with tacosandpussy. as soon as it was released,i bought the lp (yes vinyl) and loved it. unfortunately zz went commercial after that with eliminator, and i wasn't so impressed.
@digschopper I can't pretend to dislike their commercial work; it's not bad and is certainly fun to jam to while shooting the breeze with buddies. But it just wasn't the same, wasn't the badass raw blues rock we'd seen in the 70's. But think of it this way; it got the band a wider audience who then went back to the back catalog and got the old records even more attention. Going commercial isn't always selling out in that sense. And at least Gibbons' solos were still legit at that
@drquesadilla well put,and i totally agree. i just hope the younger fans find out that these guys are more than spinning guitars and beards. they're so much more.
wtf!!! they ruined one of the best albums of all time with this fucking 80's sounding shit remix!!!! this is the rock and roll equivalent of the george lucas/star wars nightmare!!!
@tippimail1 I agree. Can't stand the sound of these triggered drums that were added to the original mix xO. I really need to get my own copy of this on vinyl...
I heard the story, thought I was the man they singin' bout back in the day. This is , in my humble opinion, the best 3 man band that ever pushed a pick and a set of sticks. Timeless Texas Blues Rock Rocks ON.
there was good music on eliminator, and I like it, theres nothing wrong with it, you just dont like it rofl... so immature... It must be shitty and something wrong with it if you dont like it... OMG like i havent heard that line of crap before
this is one of zz best tunes, makes you understand why hendrix had said be careful about this guy,he is going to be one of the best blues guitarist out there.!
Man..love this song but this is the SHITTY re-mastered version. Some Exec must have gotten ahold of all their early stuff and put that echo on the drums and all the vocals to try and make them all sound like Eliminator, lame. Listen to the original vinyl version of this and you'll be blown away at how much better it is!
@tacosandpussy Tejas, while an excellent album, is not ZZ Tops 1st album; it's the 5th. The four preceding albums, in reverse order, are: Fandango! (1975), Tres Hombres (1973), Rio Grande Mud (1972), and ZZ Top's First Album (1971). Tejas was released in 1977.
How have I never heard this song before, what a classic, the tone is just perfect!

Funny how the older version sounds better than the remaster. I know it's just personal opinion but this version just doesn't sound right to me.

Classic ZZ. One of my favorites from Tejas. Most definitely. The Rev. Willy G. KEEPS A ROLLIN' ALONG. As it should be.... I do believe. : )

remarkable guitar by gibbons sounds like 3 different layers
always thought this track was about the texas prison hostage siege
the drug kingpin who died in a shootout trying to make a break for it
11 day standoff in '74 used women - who'd volunteered to walk out w/ him - as human shields
him & his accomplices shot the women hostages dead before rangers
took them down
nightmare story haunting song
