I remember this episode and they should have kept this scene. Without it, it's implied that Big sort of figured out for himself that he was being distant and insensitive to Carrie during this wedding reception they were all attending.

The writers would eventually let Sam use that line, less aggressively, on Big a few seasons later (this time to tell Big to back off from Carrie), but instead of heeding Sam's warning, he snidely replies "Can't we all just get along" and Sam ends up backing down.
