  • i always viewed this in my head as william rushing in, and he and the rake duel (the guitar riffs at the beginning). the rake bests william, is moving in for the kill, and suddenly the room gets all foggy and the specters of his dead children (and wife, maybe) appear and start haunting the hell out of him. whether they kill him or drive him insane, i don't know, but it's always an amazing image. the children vocals in this are perfectly done.

  • @salmonblox I always viewed the Rake as just another side of William. After his lust is sated he realizes this wasn't the life he wanted and he kinda goes dipshit.

  • This song is genius. There is one or two children in this chorus that is just ever so slightly off key, creating a creepy, offputting sound, but it seems intentionally sung that way. Brilliant.

  • i heard this song in school. its good.need the albums

  • I don't think the Rake is killed, but driven off and pursued by his dead children's ghosts, while William comes in and rescues Margaret.

  • You know.. I think the creepiest part of the whole song... Is the cheery fucking music in the background lol. Just sayin...

  • I'm in this song. 3rd verse. No biggie

  • @969joseph If that's true, that's pretty bad ass. :)

  • @969joseph If that really is you that is awesome, this is one of my favorite songs from the album

  • why am i listening to this at night? Dx

  • So, so beautiful... Like... seriously, oh my god.

    /sounds like an amazed teenager/

  • The kids singing remind me of Coraline for some reason...

  • william actually kills the rake when he finds him w/ margaret. this is him with his children in the afterlife.

  • @Trizm11Trap890 Interesting interpretation. I suppose the lack of lyrics lends itself to multiple possible meanings

  • @Trizm11Trap890 I personally disagree with this interpretation becasue the 2nd child sings that she has "regained" her breath, suggesting life in the traditional sense.

  • @jacobthelioneater

I see your point and shouldn't have written my comment in a factual manner, but why choose then to "reanimate" and torment your father? It's a particularly opportune time, and is slightly questionable in that matter. Also, another interpretation of your exemplary lyric, "Father here in death, i have regained my breath", is that she IS in fact dead and moved on, and wherever she is now, she's able to breathe and speak.

  • @Trizm11Trap890 my interpretation is that the events occur such that the children torment the father BEFORE William arrives and kills the Rake. This makes the most logical sense because there is no mention of William until AFTER this song- and it seems like too much of a stretch for me to believe William somehow killed him, we get this scene, THEN we hear about william- usually characters are introduced before their actions occur, as in the Rake song.

  • @Trizm11Trap890 I also think that, as alluded to in the Rake's song, haunting implies that the one being haunted is alive

  • Oh,jeez.I have a mental image of a creepy zombie girl singing as I listen to this *shiver* Thats the reason I love this album though! It manages to bring you into the world of the story so easily :D

  • Why the hell is there an ad on song 15 of the album? I lost the groove I had going.

  • There's something about children singing that has always creeped me out. But there's something different here. Everything sounds just SLIGHTLY, MINUTELY out of tune, and it adds to the creepy/dead-ness of it all. It gives me the creeps. And yet I'm happy that The Rake finally got what he deserved.

  • Goosebumps a LOT EVERYtime! I love it sooo much. haha The Decemberists are brilliant!

  • so very chilling... i love it!

  • This is absolutely chilling.

  • Isaiah's part is my favorite, mostly because of that.. beat.. not sure what it is, but it sounds powerful and amazing <3

  • @pinkllama16 i know exactly what you're talking about, my fave part too

  • intro like a song of MGMT

  • @Itsbeavis yeah, "It's Working"!!!! Totally!

  • such a big difference between listening to this on speakers and on headphones!

i definitely get the chills on speakers.

  • this songs give me the chills! LOVE IT!

Specially how the kids sing on slightly different time.... gives such a spooky effect!! THE HAZARDS OF LOVE PEOPLE!

  • For some reason I could see The Decemberists doing the soundtrack to a Legend of Zelda video game or something.

  • @Npowell01 I could see my life being complete if they did that. My favorite musicians mixed with my favorite games? Yeah, my life would be great. (:

  • @Npowell01

'Cause it sounds a fair bit like the Song of Storms? ^_-

  • a very very cool but creepy song - you've got to love them.

  • i love the decemberists but this song kind of gave me nightmares.... but its all good

  • Pardon my ignorance, but who are the Rakes children?

  • @LostHeroXIII Listen to the earlier song on this album, titled...well "The Rake's Song". The Rake married a woman simply due to his lust and was horrified as soon as she produced his children so he systematically murdered them. "The Hazards Of Love 3 (Revenge!)" is what this is known as.

  • @LostHeroXIII The three children he had in "The Rake's Song" He killed them, now they came back to haunt him.

  • This is the ghosts of the Rakes children saving Margaret. It's chilling and amazing.

  • @sk8er7455 'attempting' to save would be the right way to say it. D:

  • @OMNOMMOUSE haha good point

  • The harpsichord in this ROCKS. Awesome!

  • 0:00-0:32 my favorite part, I absolutely love that part. Sounds so cool and good. The ghostly effect on their voices is great too.

  • The beginning theme makes me think of running across a dark rocky surface in the mist, don't ask why...

  • because your high?

  • NO!

  • I am. :D

  • I think that's intended to be william's leitmotif, up tempo, to indicate that he's on route

  • They should have kids sing this at their concerts :D

  • @xplodRegenerate they had a recording, I believe, at the philly folk festival they did this at

  • @xplodRegenerate i did sing this at north shore middle school

  • ummm. so i dont have this version on my hazards of love why is that. could it be because i downloaded it??

  • everytime i hear eziah's revenge part i imagine him slwoly walking towards the Rake with like his bones snapping and popping and that that's what the drum parts are in his scene 2:14 - 3:18

  • But he's "turned to ash", as he says, 'cause he got burned. :|

  • This is my favorite simply because it is so eerie.

  • does anyone know who sings the childrens parts? when they preform i dont think they kids come out.

  • its the 2 (or 3...pretty sure its two) new girl singers along with the original...cant think of there names off the top of my head for some reason, but they make the song sweet xD

  • a recording

  • @DillyDally22 Natalie Briare, Clara Ell, and Joseph Ell

  • creepy song!but its so good, i hate the dad character and i love how this album could be a play<3

  • The effects of the instruments for Dawn's part (the one that was drowned) is incredible.

    It's from 1:23 to 1:31

    Gives me chills.

  • I love this song! Its kinda creepy but thats why I like it. Good for the kids man, they deserve some revenge.

  • So the little tikes got to one up dad good for them. :)

  • This is probably my favorite song on the Hazards of Love for the sheer value of creepy music. The scratching of the strings just pulls it together.

  • yesss! i totally agree.

  • I heard them play this in concert, I love the beginning but the rest scared me so much! My friend was laughing at me...lol

  • this song live is so intense and so damn good!

  • If only the rake's children could take on the evil forest queen...

  • The Decemberists is easily one of the greatest bands to ever write music.....EVER. The lyrics in all of their songs just blow my mind.

  • Agreed, but this song is just a touch to creepy. I never really cared for haunting childrens vocals, but it's kinda growing on me.

  • WOW I was sent here by Frank Iero (MCR) and I am just floored! Why havent I ever heard of these guys before????? Im totally putting this on my to-get list!

  • yea he wrote something bout the 3rd track? lol

  • This is my favorite song in the album. I don't know why, but I love the creepiness!

  • I saw this live and the kids were just a recording.. would have been awesome if they had brought a bunch of kids on stage!

    haha

  • I thought so too, but they are ghost kids, so disembodied kid voices worked

  • i love this song, it freaks my out though

  • This whole ablam is a story look om profile for it this conneted to the rake

  • I usually can't stand the sound of children singing but this is intentionally creepy and the effect is amazing!

  • OH GOD I LOVE THIS SONG. <3

  • This is my favorite song from the album hands down! I love the childrens choir.

  • DAMN! they really need to make a 6th star...

    =\

  • This has to be my favorite from the album. Hands down. Good that the kids got revenge on the rake.

  • I can't help but feel glad that that Rake got what he deserved.

... Sympathise with his self-resolved plight, though I do.

  • this song reminds of the movie "Coraline".

near the end of the movie where she traped in the other world and the others and trying to make her stay.

    anyone agree?

  • Oh I agree!

    My brother just said that!

  • OMG!!!!! Yes that is EXACTLY what I thought when I heard this. So creepy, and yet, amazing.

  • haha yah.

when i frist herd the song im like

    omg!

    coraline...

    xD

  • the simplicity of this one with the baroque style with children singing then how it escalates to complex sounds is just so cool and fits so well.

  • Probably the best song on the new record. The children haunting their father is a very cool approach, especially with the kids singing.

  • @SiN3MATIC The last track is easily better than this...one of the most beautiful songs I've heard
