Okay, my bad. You have sharp eyes. Perhaps the film was originally shot for both full Cinemascope ratio (2.35:1) and masked widescreen (possibly 2:1) with slightly different frame cropping. Anyway, thanks for pointing that out.

The top and bottom of the image in this version are NOT cropped. This is the original full widescreen frame in its correct aspect ratio. In the French version, the picture is stretched vertically to fill the HDTV frame.

Even if the French version is stretched vertically, it contains more information that's not on the US version. Compare image of version 1 at 0:34 sec to same image at O:18 sec in version 2, you can see the top and the bottom were cropped. The eyes of the man at the far right are missing in version 1 as compared to version 2. You can also see the hand of the Barbarian resting on the pillow in version 2. In version 1, it's cropped. The US version is missing visual information.
