FYI everyone: 2 British citizens were just released by Somali pirates after 388 days of captivity. They were a retired couple that used most of their savings to buy a boat and take a 6 month trip when they were caught. I would like to say that Somali Pirates are actually the nicest possible abductors you can encounter, they have only had two people die, one of a heart attack and another was killed in the capturing. Honnestly John, I am dissapionted (abliet for the first time). Did you not just write a book that had a theme about better understanding individuals by looking at them as we do ourselves, or I did I misinterpret. The problem with the formentioned options you gave for the cause and blame of aformentioned conflict is that it assigns them to uspecific entities.
If the American Civil War taught us anything (which it very well may have not), it taught us that, if we really want to figure out the cause of a violent struggle, we must look past the political histories and cultural relations and look at the individauls fighting the wars. You can call the Civil War a fight over slavery, but anyone with a third grade level history education can tell that the rel reasons (on the Southern side at least) are much more convoluted.
In the end, no one was really quite shure what they were fighting for, beyond that they were fighting for "their honor and their home." I imagine that, in the end, the people of aformentioned African countries are not in conflict because of any long gone disrupted way of life, or because us more wealthy countries are to inattentive in all the wrong areas, or because their just not taking very good care of themselves.
Those things may have set the ball rolling, but, I would imagine, the people fighting now are fighting simply to make a proffet and survive another day.
P.S. I just realized that I kinda sound like I'm blaming the people themselves for their toubles, which John said we shouldn't do in the very beginning of his vidio; I do not mean to. I don't think that these people should be blamed for wanting to survive and/or proffet, that being what any reasonable person would do. I totally understand where you're coming from, but you've got to understand something. When colonization started in Africa, one of the first thing the governments did was divide the people into "ethnic" groups, or tribes. Certainly, when divides are created between people, there begins a mind set that "They're different. LETS FIGHT." And surely enough, examples of this are evident everywhere. I am from Ethiopia. I would know.

FYI everyone: 2 British citizens were just released by Somali pirates after 388 days of captivity. They were a retired couple that used most of their savings to buy a boat and take a 6 month trip when they were caught. The pirates initially wanted 7 million dollars thinking that the couple was rich or part of a larger corporation. It took this long to convince them that the couple had little money and to negotiate a lower ransom which is as of yet undisclosed.

Fortunately, I don't think it is the important question. The people at fault are most likely all dead. So, the question is who can do what to make things better? I would like to say that Somali Pirates are actually the nicest possible abductors you can encounter, they have only had two people die, one of a heart attack and another was killed in the capturing. Two out of more the 500, also whats not known is that piracy in Somali has been happening for decades, since the tribes were established to make sure other tribes don't take areas that belong to them and to because of illegal dumping following the Somali Civil war. Just thought I'd mention that.

Did you not just write a book that had a theme about better understanding individuals by looking at them as we do ourselves, or I did I misinterpret. The problem with the formentioned options you gave for the cause and blame of aformentioned conflict is that it assigns them to uspecific entities.

If the American Civil War taught us anything (which it very well may have not), it taught us that, if we really want to figure out the cause of a violent struggle, we must look past the political histories and cultural relations and look at the individauls fighting the wars. You can call the Civil War a fight over slavery, but anyone with a third grade level history education can tell that the rel reasons (on the Southern side at least) are much more convoluted.

In the end, no one was really quite shure what they were fighting for, beyond that they were fighting for "their honor and their home." I imagine that, in the end, the people of aformentioned African countries are not in conflict because of any long gone disrupted way of life, or because us more wealthy countries are to inattentive in all the wrong areas, or because their just not taking very good care of themselves.

However, being the source of the problems is rather different than being at fault for the wars; I find it rather hard to blame a war CURRENTLY being fought on anyone that's been dead for more than a decade. The people who fight are at fault for that, and the people leading the combatants are the ones most at fault.

Somalia suffers from a national drug problem and until THEY are ready to change there isn't much we are going to be able to do to help them. Drugs, violence and piracy are not the way for a nation to advance. We can see it in our own streets. I have seen it in our own streets. I am working with young men and women in the hopes that they will not follow some of their less fortunate neighbors and end up dead long before their time. Thanks for your videos btw.
