@HappyHag thank you for that piece of advice, but will the method work? My eye doctor said that I will have to get glasses in order to keep my license. The thing is that I don't want to wear glasses because that will just hurt my eyes even more.
@MrJoka58 Well, the thing to do is to try it. Do lots of palming, swinging and convergence practice, focusing all the time on relaxing so everything you do, you do it in a laid-back sort of way. And take note of any changes in vision, so you can get an idea if it's having any effect. Small effects are as valid as large ones.
@HappyHag Well that comment just created 2 more questions. What is convergence practice? And, in the Bates Method, it says to sun your eyes. Doesn't sunlight hurt your eyes because of the UV Rays? I wanted to make sure of that before I started today.
@MrJoka58 Sunning would be done keeping your eyes closed and constantly moving your head so that the light comes from different angles all the time, and palming afterwards. Convergence could be done using Magic Eye pictures, or a Brock string, or simply holding up two pens in line with your nose with one nearer and one further away, and practising how when you look at the tip of one, you get two images of the tip of the other. Bweing very relaxed of course. And palming before you feel strain.
i just want to say thanks for your videos, ive heard of the bates method but didnt quite understand how it worked. You make it so simple and already i'm seeing some improvment on my vision. I have 20/200 but now can see things i could never have seen long ago!
people with presbyopia (farsightedness) see bad in the distance as well, not only up close.
this rings a bell. as myopes we can just make our reading vison perfect and will benefit in the distance. this is the indirect way and works great for me.
think of it, wether you can see up clos or up far, it goes toward overall relaxation anyway.
I just recently got glasses because of nearsightedness, and my prescription is around 0.5. can the bates method help me restore my eyesight completely ? I am aware that my eyesight has fallen by a small number, so can I hope for full recovery ?
@goldenevdo You have the best hope of anyone! Just give it a try and see what happens. Remember you're looking for relaxation in your eyes, and movement in your visual field. Swing, close your eyes and imagine, swing, close your eyes and imagine. Get a mental impression of a moving world.
@iammdeepak1 I know of people who have reduced their prescription from that kind of strength. I don't know about to 20/20. It is harder, the stronger your prescription. B ut still worth doing. You may find you can actually manage without glasses in some situations even with blur. Not while driving, of course.
@HappyHag - Will I need to keep my glasses aside for most activities while doing the procedure? Is it right that the method is not effective until you try and not use glasses as far as possible?
@iammdeepak1 If your glasses give you the best possible correction, then all the time you are wearing them, you have to maintain the poor vision in order to see most clearly. If you see what I mean.
I have read Bate's book, and I pretty much know all the techniques and stuff, I'm wondering how long I would have to practice every day, and how long it would take until I had approximately a normal 20/20 vision if my eyesight is currently -1.7
Well, it's not about how long. It's about getting a feel for movement in the visual field. Practise different kinds of swing etc until you notice a change in focus. Whatever you did that caused that change, keep doing it. Minus 1.7 is not a strong prescription and should not be too difficult to change.
i was wondering, like if im in the car and as the car drives down the street, will it also improve my vison by looking at something as we drive by it and then something else and someting else, ect. ect.?
Hmmm, I would just like to ask - when were children or babies, our eyesight was perfect.
When we do the Bates Method, we relax our eyes and can see clearer at times.
But anyway my point is, do young children have perfect eyesight because they are relaxed and used properly?
Because the Bates Method sort of, in my opinion, promotes that should we get back to 20/20, we get back to the sort of eyes sight we had when we were younger, to its original state.
I think I've gained the tiniest of improvement in my vision with palming, but I'm not gonna be happy yet. How long do you think it would be to notice a difference in my vision.
Plus I feel more aware to relax my eyes when I look at things, i.e. a photo with words on it or the clock. Is this showing a positive progress?
And what about swinging??? Imagining that a printed letter is vibrating gently, both with your eyes closed and when you are looking at it. Palming is not everything.
Thank you for info. I don't have glasses, but I have a weaker right eye than left. I can still see things, but I have a touch of blur in my eyes. I would like to correct it before it becomes worse. I have tried the Bates Method for the last few days now, I want to build on it as well. In terms of improving my vision, after I palm or something, for like 2 seconds I have relaxation in my eyes, and clearer eyesight I think, plus I'm more aware.
What should I do to improve on my vision? Carry on?
Does it make a difference if you practise swinging? Really it's about finding ways to shift, swing and engage your imagination. If one way doesn't seem to work, try another.
Hey I just want to know something HappyHag, I put cold, cold, water on my eyes, then I let go of my eyes and relax, is this a form of Bates Method by any chance?
imo it's mainly acting as a signal to your brain - 'hey, I'm doing something nice to my eyes' - like having your shoulders massaged. It tells you to relax. Cold water gives you a refreshed feeling, good in the morning, and warm water gives you a soft sleepy feeling, good before bed!
Could someone please help me. When I swing why do I see two images, and then it returns to one single (fusion) when I stop swinging. I read in "Relearning To See" by Thomas Q, that it's perfectly normal but they never explain why.
If you see two images it's because your eyes are not both pointing in the same direction. They go like that if you aren't looking at anything in particular. But I think, when you swing, it is possible to get a fused image. It helps to point with your finger and watch just above where your finger is pointing.
It sounds hard, but during swinging you are not supposed to be worrying about what your eyes are doing at all! Pretend your eyes are TV cameras and focus on the control centre inside your head and the images you are getting there. Don't try to recognise or interpret objects, just clock them as they move across your screen.
Thank u for replying. I find your videos very different from the rest. Anyway, I've another ques. What's the difference btw long and short swing? Which one do i apply when, say, practising swinging with prints?
this is weirD! anyhow i have a question im long sighted and short sighted and its very very little! to the extend my friend said ur glasses are light glass lol! what can i do to focus in on Distant things such as signs and faces!
You could just try swinging for a few minutes, shading one eye, and with the other one, looking at something tht is slightly out of focus. With your eyes closed, imagine it swinging gently from side to side, then regard it softly for a moment, then repeat.
and i can see the difference but only 5-10 minutes after training then my vision is abck to normal...but i can see the changes in my vision on near looking...it's better than before
I am still working on my vision but it's a lot better than it was. Relaxing your eyes, yes, but it's also about relaxing your mind if you really want to improve your vision, and that's not so easy in today's world!
You don't have to have a visual image of the room like a movie. It's more of a sense, a feeling that movement is happening, mostly an awareness of which direction it's going in.
Should I do swinging and all these eye excercises with or without my glasses? My vision is a bit blurry without glasses, though. By the way, I love your videos.
Thanks, Furyofnasa. Yes, the idea is to do them without glasses so as to give your vision a chance to change. Glasses make it perfect already, so why would it change? The thing about paying attention to movement is that no matter how blurred your vision is, it can still pick up movement, and that is what helps it to refocus.
i have astigmatism with +-0.5 in the left eye and +0.75 in the right eye. was wondering if the swinign tech is gonna provide me with some relief. i cant wear glasses owing to some ear problems and contact are not avaiable for mild astigmatism.but my eyes burn everytime. what would you suggest?
I would suggest, try swinging and see if it helps! Also try palming (see other video). Draw a straight black line on paper and play with it (looking with separate eyes, various distances, different orientations) until you discover the angle of greatest distortion, and then while palming, imagine that line being drawn again crisp and black.
Thank you so much for all of this. I can feel my eyes more relaxed than ever and I've been doing this for a few days. BTW is that your husband at the computer?

It's often easier to get the swing by closing your eyes and imagining the room swinging round you. Imagine that the object that catches your attention is moving smoothly past at the same speed as everything else.
