Hydrogen can be obtained simply from water.

sure, you can easily get hydrogen from water, but it takes a somewhat complex apparatus to contain it once you've separated it out. I like the drain cleaner method because it's quick, easy, and yields alot of hydrogen.

or alkali metals with water (preferably lithium, gives lithium hydroxide and tons of hydrogen, then add aluminum.

The last one in the fireplace was a balloon filled with hydrogen. Hydrogen can be made by mixing aluminum foil and certain drain cleaners.
