Lane Smith looks exactly like and sounds like Nixion, WOW. When did this movie come out; and is it on DVD. I have got to see this one, I knew there was a reason why I like Lane Smith, he was a great actor; he will be missed but never forgotten.
The original choice to play Nixon in Oliver Stone's movie was Tom Hanks followed by Jack Nicholson. Jack would have been the better choice of the two, and I think he could have pulled it off!
I just looked up "best actors to play Nixon" and even looked through Wikipedia, and nobody even listed this movie! This is the best portrayal of Nixon by far!
After seeing the way over-hyped Nixon/Frost, Lane Smith can act circles around Frank Langella as RN. Langella is a fine actor but the under-appreciated Smith gives a performance that shows Nixon as the complicated, yet very human enigma, that he was. Smith played him as a real person.
This is a very good portrayal. It really is. Hopkins was believable simply because he *became Nixon, and I completely agree about Langella...I hated his performance.
Beau Bridges overdid it in " Kiissinger & Nixon" a 1995 TNT TV movie. Ron Silver played Kissinger and overdid the deep voice so you couldn't understand the lower words. This looks and sounds the most like the real guy, bravo Lane Smith.
I watched this movie in early 2002 it is rarely aired and Lane Smith BECAME Richard Nixon especially his mannerisms and vocal inflect. I especially loved Smith's "Uh...Okay"s.

@alady4justice71 This made-for-TV movie aired in 1989, and I believe a DVD exists.

Nixon talked to President Kennedy's picture and said "Someday everyone's gonna know all that sex you had with women in the white house!"

IMHO, the only other actor who came even marginally close to portraying Nixon was Rip Torn -- and he had only a bit part in a movie about John Dean.
Hopkins did a good job, but the script he had to work with (cinematic, though it was) was rediculously unreal.
I was riveted by Lane Smith's performance.
I've wanted to to see this again for so many years. SteveCan73, if you have the whole movie, POST IT!!! Pleeeeeeeease with a cherry on top?! :-D

hah. screw both of them. Langella completely misfires. This Lane guy is making a nice little teddy bear Nixon.
No one has cut to the heart of Nixon like Anthony Hopkins. And i can't wait to see Philip baker Hall in Robert Altman's Secret Honor one of these days

I have seen SEVERAL great actors try to and ultimate fail at portraying Nixon. Hopkins couldn't do it, Langella over-cartooned it.
Lane Smith NAILED it.

@asianhombre You're absolutely right. He totally nailed it. He WAS Nixon.

@asianhombre i most definitely concur. the movie is quite epic, but i wish oliver stone used Lane Smith. Hopkins is great, but not as Hitler or Nixon
