it's spooky how sad this scene is - i mean he's a computer yet you feel sympathy for him, it goes to show how kubrick wanted us too see how dangerously attached we're becoming to our technology
It's strange, when watching only this scene, you feel symphathetic towards HAL. However, when watching the whole movie you don't feel as sorry for HAL.
wow, a computer A.I. showing some sort of emotion (fear at least). Did anyone else feel kind of symphathetic for HAL? Never seen the movie all the way through, but thats got to be one of the best computer voices ever. Original, monotone, near perfection.
Clearly you know nothing of films... This film is one of stan's greatest works.. There is so much that is not fully understood that true film fans can watch it over and over looking for an answer
4:25 good afternoon, how are you gentlemen. all your base are belong to us. you are on the way to destruction. you have no chance to survive make your time.
It's interesting. HAL is almost more human than the astronauts he kills. Even his murder and deceit - there's nothing more human than that, isn't there? And near the end, where he's pleading for his life, begging Dave to stop - there's a real desire to live behind it - he doesn't want to die. "I'm afraid, Dave."
The expressionless voice mated to the "motivated" crap about "enthusiastic for the mission" and the false regret and passive aggressive maneuvering-- is both frightening and reminiscent so much of "this is for your own good" bullshitting.

Best scene is the trop through the stargate. The whole movie is salient, sentient, and sublime.

At 1:27, there seems to be a human finger on the far right of the screen that doesn't fit with the whole scene. What can it be?
