"On August 26 1974, Rush played at the Agora Theatre and Ballroom in Cleveland, Ohio. The performance was the band's first recorded with drummer Neil Peart, who had joined the band on July 29, 1974, approximately one month prior to this recording. The concert was recorded live for the local FM station, WMMS, and was later released unofficially as The Fifth Order of Angels." -and later as "ABC 1974".
It's not Neil on the drums. They didn't know him then. They met a couple of weeks before a tour for their first album which was released in 1974. Fly By Night was their second album, first with Neil, and was released in 1975. The drummer is the original, the late John Rutsey. He too, was a damn good drummer.
That is without a doubt Neil on the kit...rutsey never showed any kind of hand speed like what's played on this recording. Listen to the rolls as the song progresses along with the combination double base with triplet floor time...signature Neil...not sure anyone on li.e can prove recording date...all just speculation.
Oh my GOODNESS. Thank you so much for posting this song. I saw "Rush: Beyond The Lighted Stage" and was ready to break numerous laws in order to get this song, but it's right here! Thank you!
It's definitely Neil. They played this a bunch of times on their first tour w. Neil and The Fifth Order of Angels boot is from 8/26/74 like ditoliaferro said. Trust me.
This is Neil on drums. It's the 8/26/74 show at the Agora Ballroom, Cleveland, OH show that was broadcast on the radio. They included this song in their setlist.
@guppypup ur retarded, this was played before their first album came out and they got neil shortly after their opening of their first album. this john rutsey.
@RubixTutorial01 Just by listening to it I think it is John. Neil is so much smoother and john was not as refined. This is apparent on this sound track. My opinion
@RubixTutorial01 As guppypup said, Neil is definitely on drums here. The Agora Ballroom show was Neil's first recording with the band. If you examine the history of Rush you'd see that John left the band on July 25th, 1974, and this performance was recorded on August 26th of the same year. Neil only joined the band 4 days after John left (on July 29th). Thusly, it could only have been Neil here. The bootleg of this show was unofficially released as "The Fifth Order of Angels", look it up kid.
K but if U listen to the Cool drum fills at 2:30 and 3:15, it sounds like they can only be done with double kick, which I don't think JOhn played, so I think it has to be Neil cause he did some cool double kick stuff
It would be great to hear Rush play this live again, but nobody would really know this song. Well, unless that is you were hanging around with Rush in High School.
God I miss Ged's power vocals. The aggression is still there in their music but his voice is wayyy too mellow anymore. Too many years of the roof raising screams does it to ya I guess :P

Yeah this is before the first album, so definitely not Neil. Though I do have to say this is some of the best Rutsey drumming ever. Good stuff.

Neil all the way...classic snare fills...double bass fills...Riyadh wasn't as fast with the hands as this recording.
