The dowels should be slightly flexible. The horizontal dowel should also be curved.

Franklin never claimed to discover electricity. His experiment proved that lightning was an electrical charge. Based on that he invented the lightning rod. BTW, the kite was attached to a primative battery, nobody was holding it obviously.

Ben Franklin did not discover electricity, they proved it on Mythbusters. They made the exact kite with the lightning rod and the key, and they shot 50,000 volts at the kite, and took a jell model and touched it to the key, and the model burned up. so if ben franklin actually did that with a kite, he would be dead. and the model burned up with only half of a lightning. not a full bolt.

"Good 'ol Ben's kite" didn't actually catch a lightning, it's line just conducted some static electricity, if it had done so, he would had probabily burn like a candle.
