I think, for me, it's because they don't actually end up getting married or even reconciling until almost the end of season 7, where of course another tragedy occurs. They asked Emma Caufield about it, too; she said thought it was perfect for Anya because it was like her -- quick and to the point.

They actually weren't sure if Season 7 would be the last season (hence the slight cliffhanger). Emma Caulfield (Anya) didn't want to return if Buffy continue with season 8 and so they killed off her character.

I love Anya she was so funny and she was my favorite. I think that they should have killed Andrew or Faith insted of Anya she was the best on the show! It was so sad that her and Xander didn't get their happy ending. I cried so much when she died and when Xander left her at their wedding i think she was the best for him.
