@yubringbeef Lol!! All my valves were fine. It ran great for a year until one exhaust valve, in the number one cylinder, got stuck open, lol. I'm about to finish my build now. Rebuilt from the bottom up and will be pushing 20psi when I'm done :D
I just bought the mechanical myself. They sell it on Modern performance. Made by PC I. Way better than that hydraulic piece of crap. My welds look worse than that. What size turbo is that? 20g?
@dtoll2002 Nice man. I got shitty welds cause home depot doesn't sell good welding materials :P That turbo is a T3/T4 hybrid .50 trim compressor with a .63 A/R turbine. Seals are blown on it. Getting another Garrett.
@gump54 Yuppers. Always go OEM if you get a hydraulic tensioner. But I'm switching to a mechanical tensioner because it responds a lot better to a heavier load at higher RPM's.
@gdog00187 I thought the same thing when I first took the stock ones out, lol. Then again when you look up the dimensions you think it's shorter since it's measured from the ring land to the center of the rod journal.
@underling17 Cool man. I'm rebuilding mine again due to rod knock. Whole new setup. I've got HKS, TiAL, Garrett, Fidanza, Treadstone, Megan Racing, South Bend, Hahn Racecraft, and a whole grocery list of stuff. Looking to be pushing around 20lbs of boost once I'm done ^L^
@underling17 what i didnt like is how i had a timing belt snap on me an i did the head rebuild and then the motor spun a bearing so i said screw the car and then decided tha it was my first car and i had fun with it and figured i would bring it back from the grave. the only issues i dont like about the 420a's is that they wear down so easily, the 4g63 motor lasts so much longer
@underling17 Damn, that sucks. I'm switching from hydraulic to mechanical timing tensioner. A lot more stable under load compared to the hydraulic and I'm also getting Gates performance timing belt kit. Want to do it right the first time around so I don't have to go through hell snapping a belt.
@underling17 i know the feeling lol. i have a gs and an rs model, the rs is getting the engine rebuild. the gs is gonna get a 6 cylinder from a sebring and its gonna be a drag car.
@PaulRSTEclipse my friends uncle gave the the idea at his garage lol. he drag races in texas and he said it would be a big hit with the import guys ou there. and he even gae me the ideo to convert it to rwd and run a chevy 327 motor in it lol
@underling17 Chevy small blocks have been done before on 2g's. It's a great idea! Get the lightweight Japanese frame, throw American Muscle in it, some fatties on the rear and you're set to go!
Oh I am a pro at timing. I should've taken a photo of the cams themselves. Then you'd understand. The exhaust cam dowel pin snapped, and I was lucky to not slap the pistons to valves. Dowel pin snapped, and flipped about 165degrees.
hey my 420a engine just went out now i need a new one i c u have illinois plates do you know any were i can get one for cheap or can i rebuild the one i have
What went out in the engine? Did you throw a rod, blow some piston rings, spun a bearing? As long as you didn't put a hole in the block, it's fixable. If you want to get a used block I'd say find a pick'n pull, or an auto wreckers junk yard and get yourself a used block.
i bought a rebuild kit for 420a for around 370 with new pistons on ebay, another 60 to have the new pistons installed on the rods, the junkyard wanted between 600-1200 for a engine. so it depends on how much u r willing to spend and if u can rebuild the engine yourself. but i cant get the car to stay running for some reason, runs for around 5 min than stalls and has no spark to 1 & 4 something keeps tripping my asd and i have to wait for the engine to cool down before it will start again
Ding ding ding! You win..... A cookie..... lol. The exhaust cam is 180 degrees off so both intake and exhaust valves were opening at the same time, which pretty says no compression phase, lol. All fixed though and runs great :D
so im guessing you just rebuilt the whole thing? actually i was thinking about doing the same thing but starting off with a 420A block and putting in my own cylinders and cams and heads and what not. Oh and how the hell did you install the turbo? I dont quite understand. Uhm do you think you can answer a few of my questions for me?
I rebuilt the block, not the valvetrain, or cams. By cylinders you mean pistons, right? lol.
I bought what I needed to turbo the 420a (plenty of people have done it); bought oil lines, fuel components, etc etc. There's a whole list of stuff I have done to it. It's a challenge, and a great learning experience as well. If you want a more full explanation just shoot me a message and I'll explain further for you, no problem :)
you get the award for completely fucking up all 16 valves! i only managed to destroy 12 of mine haha

You need to replace the sproket cover, those sprokets should look just like the day they left the lot, great vid!!

Never herd of a sproket cover .... There isnt one a 420a ...

yeah...it's called a timing cover...but true, it's not called a sprocket cover.
