If you want to hear Karen do a solo, you have over 200 songs to choose from... It is so wonderful to hear Richard and Karen sing a duet together. They had an amazing chemistry, and produced so many great songs together. What a great team they were, with a great, and loyal band of terrific musicians. Carpenters Forever!! Love you Richard and Karen.
Karen is/was the only singer who could crescendo into a lower key. She just had that incredible voice that was an angel's. I do believe that she had one of the most distinctive voices of the century. She so generously left us with her music. We, as those who loved her, wish she was still with us. She is probably the most evocative singer that the world has ever known. She painted pictures with her voice.
@damone77 I agree with you absolutely!! Well put!! I always wondered how Karen could ease from high notes to low, or from low notes to high, in a the same line. Amazing.
Yes, I remember this old Irving Berlin tune, on my parent's old records. I don't remember who was singing it at the time. I think it was Doris Day, or someone like that, but it's a catchy nice tune, and with Richards eclectic musical taste and variety of songs to chose from, it isn't surprising that he recorded it, as well. Even being out of fashionable date, so to speak, it's still a great song. Karen sounds great and of course Richard did a great job producing it.
the few notes of this sound *exactly* like "those good old dreams"
karen should have kept her voice up. when she's singing up against richard his voice overpowers hers (in this piece). i wonder if this is when karen was really weak from her anorexia.
Okay, that's the end of my criticism. i am a big carpenters' fan and usually praise karen's singing to the high heavens....lol and this is a cute song.
I consider myself quite a big Carpenters fan and I have never actually got round to getting this album. Boy do I regret not trying now. I love this song. This song plus the Carpenters smooth vocals! It simply cries superb!
Gosh! I'm no country and western fan, but Karen has a way to make anything appreciated! Her talent and voice is truly a treasure. Thank you for posting
I think that Richard Carpenter was underrated as a singer. Too bad he was so overshadowed by his sister. Except for the first album, Offering/Ticket to Ride, he did very few lead vocals. His solo album unfortunately was not commercially successful.
Too bad Karen got wasted by Anorexia nervosa. They would be a great team today probably with their own theater in Branson, MO. Humm... I wonder if I can book The Captain & Tennelle?
Thank you for another gem Howard. Such a beautiful song "sighs" . She was so beautiful and listen to that angelic voice just wow. Bes wishes and keep the vids coming =). -Joel-
This is one song you don't hear often, but nonetheless a wonderful song, with a western twang to it and the Carpenters singing a duet in it is really terrific.
I "favorited" this one. I think this song may be from the '30s. I like the way Karen sings a couple of the words, especially "sleep". It's a bit weird for siblings to be singing this together, but Rich probably added his part many years later. The happy part of the Carpenters' story is Richard marrying and having 5 kids.
Actually, this is an Irving Berlin song, published in 1950, so I wouldn't be surprised if Rich and Karen played a record of it when they were kids. Maybe they even sang it together then....
@no1cfielder You're right. Karen originally sang this as a duet/dance with John Davidson in the "Music Music Music" special, but for some reason (rights issues, perhaps?) Richard replaced John's vocals on the CD.
love this song too. Richard did a great job. I saw the special where the other guy was singing with Karen but I like Richard and Karen together better. Thank you for this song. I love Karen and Richard's version very much. The Carpenters are the best!!! Thanks for posting.
me too. They harmonize very well together and I think Richard should have sung more with Karen, dont you? He did have a good voice also. I like this version a lot. I did favorite this video it is awesome!!! Thanks for posting.

I only wished Karen would have sang the entire song. As much as I like Richard, I think he kind of spoils the song.

Excellent example highlighting Karen's rich lower register with her clear, pristine higher register!

A superb version of this song. Karen's voice, in my opinion, was perfectly suited to this genre: in tune, perfect pitch, strong but not overpowering.

Yes, the guitar at the beginning is actually the same used in "Those Good Old Dreams", so it might have been finished in the same way.

I don't know. I actually like hearing Karen singing with her brother.

Richard is fine doing back-up as he always does. But he doesn't have the voice to be a lead singer, especially when compared side by side to Karen's.
