Streetcars are a great way of public transportation, my favourite in cities. They can take much more people per lane than it would be possible by cars. (the capacity of 10 car lanes in one streetcar lane). In Budapest lines 4 and 6 take more than 200000 passengers a day. That would be completely impossible by cars and less comfortable, much more expensive and polluting by buses.

You should consider Toronto lucky. They still have streetcars. Most of the other cities in America like LA that had the largest streetcar system in the world need their's back. It's the same in Australia where I'm from, most cities had excellant tram systems until the 50s when the councils destroyed them and built bus lines except for Melbourne.

Nice video, but I dislike it anyway. This video outlines a rather quaint and obsolete argument reminiscent of 1950s and 1960s NIMBYism and anti-trolley sentiment anyhow. Moreover, buses have accidents, too, and so do automobiles. Autos cause most traffic, anyhow, and the new streetcars are articulated, so there's less opportunity to "take up both lanes" as you put it. Toronto should keep its streetcars.

Scrapping the streetcars never works. Here in Australia, Melbourne has the best traffic situation, less pollution and easy travel for all commutors. Why? Melbourne, like Toronto, retained its streetcars. Up in Sydney, where streetcars were scrapped back in 1961, their traffic jams trippled, pollution went out of control and the buses couldn't handle the amount of passengers, causing long delays and eventually an increase in cars blocking more of the roads.

Most accidents involving street cars were caused by numb nuts who weren't paying attention. People traveling next to street car tracks expect more noise to the point where if there isn't much noise, they assume there's nothing there. if you ask me, i am the son of a TTC employee, streetcars are the best things in the world. they remove the vehicles from all lanes of traffic by allowing them to run in only one lane. as a result, it frees up other lanes for other traffic. buses are actually the waste of time here because they take up all lanes of traffic and cause more accidents then streetcars do.

Wow this video is not entirely correct. The accidents were street cars and other vehicles the street are 99% of the time the driver of the vehicle that's pined under the street car. It's a privilege to drive in Canada yet most of the Toronto drivers don't feel that way. So education and stiffer fines is key. There all kinds of cities all over the world who use a form of street car system in their cities.

I agree and also disagree with this video,most streets are only accessible by street car that's why we have them some roads use the buses because they have no tracks on the road,ttc buses are mainly used to transfer to another st or used during road work,emergencies etc. And yes some time st cars are annoying when they lose power as they only run on electricity which causes big traffic jams. But on the other hand it's good for the environment as they use no gas so zero emissions

But the only reason why I love Toronto are the streetcars. They are quite the novelty, like a bus on rails. The streetcars are very pleasent compared to buses; they are quieter and relatively a smoother ride. It is also a smart move to upgrade some of the lines to LRT, as that is the trend in North American and European cities. I was happy for Toronto about the ambitious Transit City Project, but I became really disapointed that Ford cancelled it.

@pinkyd77: first of all, it is a pleasure being able to talk civally. The newer TTC buses still burn diesel to supply electric current to traction wheels and battery banks. If service improved to the point more people could get out of cars, then people like yourself can enjoy a more peaceful drive to/from work. The city councellers have a tough job to figure how to make transit riders and drivers co-exist. I just would hesitate to write-off street cars too quickly.

What the creator of this picture video fails to report are the number of Bus/Auto accidents, Auto/Auto accidents, and auto/pedestrian accidents. There are numerous other combinations that can also occur. Obviously this opinion was written by someone who was impacted by the street car route or routes, likely the St. Clair one. You get the cars off of the downtown streets, and street cars are more free to run quickly to move more Torontonians and Tourists alike. Air Quality improves too.

If they could move around traffic and pull over to the right when stopping it would emliminate a good majority of downtown traffic. As far as air quality, we have newer, better busses!!!
