  • i'm crazy about her but I'd never seen a video of her before. she looks so pretty! Her playing and singing is just perfect. My only regret is that I never got to tell her how wonderful I think her songs are.

  • I believe The Fifth Dimension did a short-lived version of this song around 1970.

  • me too! she was a major part of my life's journey.

  • She wrote music and lyrics with the wisdom of a 40 or 50 year old. She was so young to be so deep. I miss her.

  • @stagehand113 I still miss her, too.

  • I am so happy she is going to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!!

  • I love this woman and her music! Laura was one of a kind!

  • Before Joni, there was Laura: She plays piano and cries, and sings . . .

  • @26CFR61 David Geffen wanted SO badly to sign up Laura when he started Asylum Records--he went to Joni on the rebound after Laura rejected him ;)

  • And as before.....the remarks about age, perceived intelligence etc only belittle yourself. I'm done with this conversation about how "talentless" Hip Hop is....bring me back the real RandB groups that actually played and wrote music that didnt include "samples" and third grade rhymes... keep on playing.

  • @chronikkondition I didn't intend to belittle myself or you, you just smacked of a guy who thinks they know everything about music because they play guitar and lived in the 70's. I see now that you are not. I don't really like Mr. West's lines either, but I find that when sampling is done right, it is a stimulating and interesting musical tool. Thanks for keeping the discussion composed when I didn't. And of course you should give the original artist due credit it is common sense. Au revoir

  • @chronikkondition if you think making a good sample and a good rhyme is so easy, then why aren't you making millions like Kanye is? Put your money where your mouth is the next time you wanna talk about what R&B became. we're just in another movement dude.

  • @skateconnor Do you usually comment on other peoples discussion even after they are through? "We're just in another movement"...are you a recording artist? I didnt think so........I applaud you standing up for what is basically a low level of talent perception.

  • @skateconnor I don't wanna hear about another movement...r&b has basically sucked since the late 90s.

  • 17 idiots need to leave this country

  • She's no Ke$ha...

  • Thrilled to hear of Ms. Nyro's posthumous induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She has always been an inspiration. Pure genius.

  • Congrats on being inducted into the Hall of Fame Laura!!!

  • She should have fronted Blood Sweat & Tears. They would have been in the HOF a lot sooner. Chicago Transit What?

  • She's so beautiful in this video.

Hall of Fame YES! Can you surry?! Take that Lady Gag!

  • AT LAST!!!!!! The Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame announces LAURA IS IN!!!!!!!!!! Finally!

  • Finally! Laura Nyro is being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. This is long overdue. I rediscovered Laura a few years ago and now have most of her albums. She was one of the best singer-songwriters of the 60's and 70's. Her songs became hits for the 5th dimension(Wedding Bell Blues, Stoned Soul Picnic, Save the Country), Three Dog Night (Eli's Coming). Unfortunately, it's a posthumous award. Laura died in 1997 from ovarian cancer. But her music will live forever!

  • @JimKF How few are more deserving? Back in the day, when Rolling Stone reviewed recordings, reviews named album & artist; then were devoted to discussion of Nyro songs. Her songs & name were everywhere, but you never heard her voice on the poppy music stations.

I got The Essential Nyro several years ago: never mind Jimmy Webb, Rod McKuen; hers are the songs that clock that time.

  • Finally - Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!!

  • A genious gone too soon. Underappreciated. A gift from god to the world of music. Observe how possessed she appears in this live performance. Mesmerizng.

  • "we can build the dream with love"---boy do we need to re-hear this message now.

  • Incredibly moving. One of the best on YT. And boy does this country need to hear this message of hope---its for humanity not corporations.

  • skip to Kanye West "The Glory" Sample 1:53

  • does anybody know which album this song is on?

  • I find it funny that I see remarks that the Hip Hop world "samples" previous hits and music because its "part of hip-hop". Lets be real.....if they could write the material themselves and do it sucsessfully they would. A lack of talent should'nt be explained as....."its just part of the hip hop" culture.

  • @chronikkondition using a motif well is an art technique well documented in music and visaul arts. Would you criticize a photographer for not creating the thing he photographs or a collage artist for not drawing every element in his collage? no. Even classical music uses musical elements from older songs. Rock, country, and jazz all do it. Get off your high horse of and face reality. Music is art. Artists create in different ways

  • @AcebeatGroup I can only assume you didnt understand what I posted. You realize when songs are sampled thay have to pay the owners of the copywrighted material? I am a working musician who has written published music so I understand the business. Its simply a LACK of talent that justifies the need to "sample".

  • @chronikkondition Strange, I am also a musician and I see sampling occur in many types of music. How is the use of a single vocal line different than Coltrane using the melody of So What by Miles Davis to make the song impressions? Oh, sorry you are probably some ignorant middle aged rock fan who thinks they know everything because they play guitar.

  • @AcebeatGroup . As the genre became a recorded form centred around rapping in the 1980s and subsequently went mainstream, it became necessary to pay to obtain legal clearance for samples, which was difficult for all but the most successful DJs, producers and rappers. As a result, a number of recording artists ran into legal trouble for uncredited samples, while the restrictiveness of current US copyright laws and their global impact on creativity also came under increased scrutiny. Peace>

  • @AcebeatGroup Your Photography reference is irelevant. My only point initially was that when you use a recorded and copywrighted song to "sample" into your own with third grade rhymes then you have to pay the piper. Welcome to reality tool.

  • I always keep giving what ever I find myself not liking a chance. I never judge and dismiss, so I have been checking out ALL his stuff with open mind and I conclude hands down that he is sub par as a rapper, beat maker and artist He should never call himself a musician, Nyro caliber HE'S NOT!!!!! What I am trying to say in a nice way is that he really sucks even with the help of stealing other people's creations and calling it his own!!!!! Not meant to offend anybody, just keeping it real

  • kanye west sampling brought me here. im now a fan. thank you kanye.

  • @jesseclifton same here lol

  • @jesseclifton same here!!!

  • @jesseclifton He speeded up her voice to make her sound like a damn chipmunk. Its like he's making fun of her,I doubt he's a fan. The fact that Kanye West is so popular,is only more proof of how silly the masses are.He is the perfect soundtrack for people who have more designer bags than books, for people who watch crap like the Real Housewives, for people who'd rather "hook up" than have deep, loving relationships, for people who post/send pics of their PRIVATE parts.

  • @catperson73 Wow, those are some big time lies.

  • @catperson73 NO YOU SILLY GOOSE. You think the pitch of the original song would have worked for Kanye's song???

  • Well poo poo, I was cut short. What I meant was the original orchestrated theme song for the film Laura. Anyway, many versions of it fit her well. Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, and Gary Bartz are just a few who do exceptional versions.

  • So brilliant, damn, she was so authentic, a true artist. Just incredibly unique in every possible way. I think here father named her after the 1940's film named Laura. What a beautiful song to be named after..suited her well. I'm talking about the intermen

  • @shellybellysf You said it most eloquently!!! Where are spirits/voices like hers nowadays??

  • The Glory

  • I know people say Kanye is stealing, but if he never would have sampled this song, I would have never heard it and enjoyed it.

  • smile..

  • Happy Birthday Laura! We miss you!

  • Sung with such intensity as she always did with every song...

  • red hot chili peppers is gonna kick your ass

  • Thanks explosivekenny! I really do love her. I'm not usually the obsessive fanboy type, but Laura really touches my heart. I wish there were more footage of her performing. I read an interview where she said she wanted to do a TV special, sadly, it was not to be, but this clip kinda gives a little hint of what it might have been like. Thanks again for helping to keep her great music alive. =))))

  • Before Lady Gaga and Amy Winehouse, there was Laura Nyro. She still captivates. I do miss her so.

  • @DDuncan223 No No NO, please do not compare the GREAT LAURA NYRO with those women.. ....

  • @DDuncan223 Why is it that every musician with a vagina has to be compared to Lady Gaga now

  • Well lets settle the score... Laura is a true artist/musician who studied her ass off and is versed in Jazz, Classical, Rock, Blues, art and poetry. She wrote smash hit after smash hit without stealing (oops, "borrowing") from anyone. Kanye on the other hand not only has little to no talent (he really sucks, common admit it!!!!!)... he's a schmuck to boot!!!!

    I'm just sayin'

  • @Mr1drumlover No talent must be the reason why he's the best rated hip-hop artist of the last decade. Say 'thanks' to his music taste, it is the main reason why people are still reminded of such musicians. Kanye is a nice beatmaker and can be a very decent lyricist. There are enough good songs by him. Just listen to All Falls Down, Jesus Walks, Heard em Say, Roses, Diamonds from Sierra Leone (remix), Flashing Lights, Welcome to Heartbreak, Love Lockdown, So Appalled, Runaway, Lost in the World.

  • @Mr1drumlover And then tell me what's really bad about them (except for the "stealing" part - I won't discuss that with someone who doesn't understand that sampling is a part of hip-hop). There's close to no mainstream rapper out there who can offer songs and topics like that, he's the only one who's got the guts to do it, to risk his popularity by changing musical style, he's the only one who's got the ambition to change and progresses with every album.

  • @Mr1drumlover Gtfo

  • A voice full of passion and power....and the lyrics are still relevant today.

  • @misssnaredrum - Even if we accept your claim that Kanye has 5% of Laura's talent etc it certainly can't be a bad thing that he sampled her music;... mainly because its opened up a channel to introduce her music to LOADS of younger people that might otherwise have never heard this song (and many others). That's surely a good thing right? As for the other part of your argument Kanye (particularly as a beatmaker) is amazingly talented and certainly obsessed with being a serious musician.

  • @misssnaredrum, thanks for the info. Being curious I checked out a few songs of Mr. West. Well, it is definitely not the type of music I would listen to. I do think it's a travesty to intertwine Ms. Nyro's music with his. She was a free spirt that truly expressed herself through her music. There will never be another Laura Nyro. Take care.

  • @misssnaredrum, I was reading your last comment concerning Kanye West. I agree with you. Laura Nyro was an artist in the true sense of the word. I have nothing against Mr. West. But, he doesn't match the artistic integrity of Laura Nyro. I wasen't aware of him using this song in some capacity. Can you give me some info on it. Thanks.

  • @misssnaredrum see the thing is - mostly all of that is completely opinionated. Chances are, you do not know Kanye and have no idea what his IQ is or why he is a musician. Sorry if you don't like Kanye West, but i love him and the way that he samples music and takes great songs (opinion) like these and turns them into something like The Glory. And i find it really ignorant for people to judge what a real musician is... music is an art. I believe there are just different types. no real/fake

  • I <3 Nyro!!!

  • lOVE THIS THIS IS AN AMAZING PERFORMANCE SHE WAS A CANDLE IN THE WIND SUCH A SHAME SHE DIED SO YOUNG AND WHATS UP WITH THE rOCK AND ROLL HALK.L OF FAME? THEY ARE BRAIN DEAD NOT TO INCLUDE SUCH A TALENT AS LAURA!

  • I absolutely love this song, and it was great to hear this alternative version. What a powerful song. The version by The 5th Dimension has the most powerful orchestration, but both Laura Nero versions I've heard are also very good.

  • We can build a dream with love, I know :)

  • Brilliant style, beautiful voice, deep beautiful songs, heartfelt, original, beautiful playing, musical poetry, discreet set-pieces of art, a fine artist not a commercial artist with all the idiosyncracies and eccentricities characteristic of a true artist, a mountain of soul, a chasm of depth, she opens me up like a can opener

  • This song was also done by (Paul Revere and) The Raiders in 1969/70. It's the opening song on their "Collage" album.

  • Her intensity always filled the air..I miss her still. Thanks for sharing a wonderful performance..

  • @maspots

According to Michelle Kort's bio of Nyro she was of Russian-Jewish and Italian extraction. Also, I believe Miles was invited to the New York Tendaberry sessions, but he didn't play on the album. Nyro did however play on the same bill with Miles Davis at the Fillmore East.

  • Anyone know what year this was recorded?

  • @Sodnal January 1969

  • @NewWaver80014 thanks!

  • @noahstfuboi

What a ridiculous comment! Her voice cried from her soul, bled from her heart; a songwriter, an original. She didn't define her music as blues or gospel -she could not BE defined. Your comments show your ignorance & prejudicial view of music & the world. Her faith? Don't know, don't care, She was 1/2 Jewish & 1/2 Puerto Rican & ALL NY - a blend of ALL styles of music. Miles Davis played on her 1st album because he was an admirer! No one ever sang with more heart or soul.

  • @maspots

While I agree with your sentiments concerning Laura's greatness, I must correct you on a couple of points. Her mother, Gilda Mirsky was the daughter of Russian Jews and her father Louis Nigro was the son of an Italian Catholic and Russian(Ukrainian) Jew. There's no Puerto Rican in her Laura's lineage. Miles Davis did not play on any of Laura's albums. They admired one another's music but they never collaborated.

  • I was one of the few that got to see this when it was broadcast.

It does my heart so good to see it again.

    Thank you explosivekenny.

This is the most beautiful vid.

  • gosh!!! such a treat to see true music. omg its really refreshing to see an actual live performance like this to remember a time when singers didn't need to be backed up by dancers and special effects. This is pure beauty

  • Wow! I wish I could have seen her perform. So beautiful and talented. She sings with great passion. Wonderful eyes.

  • heard this in the glory thought it was young michael jackson but w/e

  • Ahhh. She's wan't Jewish.

  • Ahhh. She's not Jewish.

  • @noahstfuboi This sounds like one of those insightful comments about white people not being able to sing the blues etc. Lauras' friend Patti Labelle used to say to her that she was a black woman inside a white womans' body. Then again, what does Patti Labelle know, right?

  • Comment removed

  • One of the best performances on Youtube hands down.

  • God i am still in love

  • We lost a legend when Laura passed. She was extremely gifted, and will be missed. R.I.P sweet Laura.

  • Kanye west was here.....

  • @syko79 what the hell are you talking about?>

  • Save this country and everything in it from Millionaire Murdoch and his press gang who have fixed the election in advance, as they did in 1979 and 1997.

  • I find it so encouraging that I can look at these lovely complements to Laura today 4/27/11 and see that she is still inspiring and making people smile today (or even tomorrow...) Thanks everyone, I guess that's what it is all about. Thanks.

  • can't study war, NO MORE!

  • yeezy tought me this Song by his Song the glory

  • Comment removed

  • who taught me about Laura?

    Yeezy taught me!

  • Thanks for posting the video. I saw her perform twice. A great singer/songwriter. Have followed her music since about 1969. Her music lives on and am forever grateful for that. :-)

  • has the rnrhof ever given a reason (none would be valid) why she's not there?

  • We don't need Conservatives or Republicans. Save the United Kingdom from the one and the United States from the other.

  • thanks for the great clip..great artist .. great writer..

  • she just blows all these "singers" today AWAY! that voice is natural , original. always wished to see her with todd rundgren on stage together. that would have been pure magic. miss her!

  • I will always love her music; she was a great writer and singer.

  • How prophetic this song is and relevant to today. Save the country!

  • Can I talk my shit again, even if I don't hit again. Dawg are you fucking kidding?

  • Never liked the big frantic, brassy, Vegasy gospel ending to this song on the recorded version (but everything before it is mesmerizing) so I like this rendition here. What a talent she was.

  • I had never heard of Laura Nyro until I watched an interview with Elton John and he mentioned how her piano playing had influenced him. He was referring to how her change ups in tempo had influenced his style. From there I googled Laura Nyro and found this video. This is brilliant...it's like she transcends to a different place when she plays....at the end when her eyes are closed ...just before she opens them...you can sense her coming back...does this make sense?? Anyways-this is great!

  • Kanye strikes again!

  • My favorite Laura Nyro song. "Keep the dream of the two young brothers"(JFK and RFK) "We can build the dream with love." The lyrics are brilliant and the song is just as relevant today as it was over 40 years ago.

  • can i talk my shit again?

  • She use to play every year at the Bottom Line in New York City. I really wanted to see her but every time she played something was going on I would say to myself I'll catch her next year. Then all of a sudden it was too late. I'll never forgive myself for not making a big effort to go. It just always seemed like there will be next year. From then on I try to make a big effort to see someone I really want to see because you never know how life will turn out.

  • This is the shit right here

  • I just love her , come back to her again and again what soul!!! thanx for posting love on ya'!

  • love her expression at 1:07-1:11

  • i idolized Laura and knew every word, every inflection, of every song. I spent countless hours playing her albums and singing along. Friends thought Joni Mitchell was the greatest female singer/song writer, but not for me. A dream come true when I saw her perform in London. I never understood why she never made it big - must have been the politics of the recording industry. My all time favourite song of Laura's... Stoney End.

  • @MANYWAYS2BE But how many brilliant covers by other people . . .

  • @manthasagittarius True, but IMO did not even come close to being as good as Laura. I used to cringe hearing them - probably still would!

  • @MANYWAYS2BE Did you see Laura at the Festival Hall or at the Union Chapel?

  • @candelise I saw her at the Festival Hall. She was visibly nervous when she came out, but her performance was brilliant. I was in heaven hearing her live with only her piano for accompaniment. I went backstage after and was lucky enough to give her a kiss and thank her for all the pleasure she had given me. She was my idol. I have never felt about any other artist the way I felt about her. We lost an amazing talent and a beautiful soul.

  • @MANYWAYS2BE Now THAT'S a show I would've loved to have seen. I read a review about that gig and they said that she was great. Her rendition of 'Map To The Treasure' was quite something, apparently. Was that the show that Jackson Browne played on as well?

  • @candelise Laura played solo. She was nervous and seemed so alone on the stage at first, but when she started to play her presence and wonderful music filled the hall and she took command. The audience received her very well. I thought she was a huge success. Unfortunately, after all this time I don't remember her performance in detail. My memory of meeting her backstage is better.

  • @MANYWAYS2BE The biography on Laura called 'Soul Picnic' should tell you why she never sold in 'Bon Jovi' quantities!

  • It is hard to hear her now without tears.

  • Fuck... she was just to good to have 'hits'. Even if nobody liked her, she'd still be the best :-)

  • I'll never forget her live concert in New Haven in 1970. I was 19, and despite the thousands of people in the concert hall, it felt as if she was singing to me alone. She had that way of connecting with everybody around her, no matter what the venue was.

  • @micktheMaag it isn't disrespectful to speed it up. it is an honor to be used as a sample by kanye. he finds real talent. it made that beat

  • Kanye "The Glory" = reason i came here.

  • @xReallygoodmusiCx well good to see that something good came out of a rapper sampling her music... too bad he disrespected her voice by speeding it up.. dont mess with things that are good already...

  • @xReallygoodmusiCx Me too :D

  • who the FUCK are the 15 people who gave this video a thumbs down?

  • @PhiltrumOz - No, not yet - but a Project is in the Works - Titled 'DECEMBER'S BOUDOIR' which will be about Laura's life. No Date set yet for it's release. It's been an ongoing Project for a while now.

  • Watched it once, twice, three, four........ Not really sure what I was looking at and listening to. Don't really know where talent like this comes from but I am sure glad I found it. Unbelievable talent.

  • Socialist lesbian, nice voice though

  • @RRNYC1998 - Actually, Laura Nyro was a Bi-sexual and NOT a Socialist but a Humanitarian. But what has your label of her have to do with her Super-Brilliance as a Composer/Lyricist & Vocalist Extraordinaire?

    Enough Said.

  • I did it for the Glory

  • In 1976 I had the opportunity to see Laura Nyro perform at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia. It was one of the peak experiences of my life but the most powerful memory of the evening was when she entered the stage. Before the overwhelming applause began, you could hear everyone's intake of breath, just a huge gasp of joy as she floated across the stage to the piano. It was an extraordinary moment.

  • What an incredible artist. After forty plus years of listening to her, I still get goosebumps and am pulled everyway emotionally with her voice and spirit. She was so gifted.

  • I've viewed hundreds of videos on youtube and this is the very best. Not much moves me to tears but I cannot watch this without falling in love with Laura all over again. Breathtaking!

  • YouTube is a cultural cornucopia and this woman's resurgence in our consciousness is one of the great gifts of this site. Her work is an invaluable gift to us, and its spread can only help everyone. Long live Laura Nyro!

  • Kanye West - The Glory

  • @IAmSoTight1 Kanye sampled another one of her songs for Carl Thomas - The Way That You Do, but I think the song never got released, I have an mp3 of it though

  • She was INCREDIBLE - what else is there to say? This performance melts me every time I watch it.

  • Wow! How could one person have such an awesome singing voice and write such awesome songs? Genius.

Weird how such genius went unnoticed.

  • This person died the exact day I was born.

  • Wahoo...real Laura Nyro! Thanks so much.

  • laura for ever

  • What a wonderful talent. The R&R HOF doesn't deserve her.

  • explosive kenny thank you so much for posting this! Made my day--Laura was/is incredible!

  • This brings tears to my eyes. She was a genius.

  • @windstorm1000 Literally , same here. Always loved her. Cried the day she died. Still do....

  • @windstorm1000 Yes, a musical genius.

Wow, Laura Nyro was so beautiful, so attractive.

So unfair that a Perfect Person like Laura dies young. I don't understand why.

  • @windstorm1000 Exactly-me too

  • the only reason I've heard of Laura Nyro is because Kanye West sampled her. Though as a lover of music, I can see that she is the truth!

  • At some point, anyone who knows anything and loves music has to acknowledge Laura on an individual level at least, as being one of those who's accomplishments are so incredible, that words can't touch possibly do justice to her.

Just listen and appreciate and shed a tear that she's gone... along with those amazing times!!

  • @angelrocket88 - Very well said!

  • How can those voters of the Rock 'n Roll HoF pick Dr. John and Darlene Love over Laura Nyro? Give me a break. The RnR HoF is a joke. They lose more and more credibility each year.

  • @JimKF - I'll tell you why - because she waa a threat to ALL Music Execs - Laura Nyro was a Rebel and she refused to bow down kiss their butts, therefore, she was 'blacklisted' to one degree or another - I think she still is. They (Some Music Execs, want to see her forgotten in the mists of Time), but People like us - we're Loyal and strong, just won't let it happen. The World lost a truly original & Brilliant Musician/Composer/Vocalist. LONG LIVE LAURA NYRO & her Legacy to Music!

  • @JimKF They must have read your comment :)

  • This is one of the few videos of Laura...She gives a great performance of one of her most simple and soulful songs...Contrary to what many think, Laura Nyro was widely recognized, even though she never had a 'hit' single...Her music was all over underground FM radio at it's inception in the late 60s...She was also financially secure through royalties...She was one of a kind, and in the top class of Soul artists...She defined Soul.

  • When i mentioned Todd Rundgren earlier I think my comments were misunderstood: Todd is known to have said that he wanted to be 'the male Laura Nyro.' As a lifetime Rundgren fan (well, since senior HS year in 1973), it was known they admired one another. Tragically, Laura never got the props she deserved, given the music industry of that era. Conversely, Todd had the survival abilities and insight to beat the music industry at its own game and fully bloomed.

  • @oogaachaka Well, as a composer, Nyro got major props and nice little bank account to go along with it (and rightfully so). Similarly, Todd has gotten major props as a producer, and way less than what his mind-melting musical genius deserves. I've never seen a thing alluding to him having been desirous of being anybody else, Nyro included. He did say, with tongue in cheek, that he was going to be the "Elvis" of the 70's. Wacky Rundgren banter ....

  • Makes me young again....

  • love her forever

  • I came her from The Glory by Kanye West!!!!

  • @BrickyBoi

    me too!

  • Man what a voice, she sings so easily, just discovered her. She's like Carole King, Carole Bayer Sayger, Joni all in one. Rather, I can hear Laura in all those singers. Hey, she's even got Emmy's growl. Awesome talent, inspiring!

  • @TRUMPETERO1 - I beg to differ - she is NOTHING like Carole King or Carole Bayer Sager - LAURA NYRO is UNIQUE and DISTINCT and Light Years ahead - Uncategorieable - but I do AGREE with you on your other points. Ironically that you mentioned Carole Bayer Sager - who was at one time, married to Genius Burt Bacharach. Laura & Burt Bacharach - have VERY unusual and complex Music Structure and I Love their Music!

  • I love and miss her. I still have a crush on her.

  • love this song

  • kanye samples her song in the glory
