Remember the purist's back in Europe and south America panicking over the USA getting to host the 94 WC, the yanks where going to ruin the sport and make the goal posts wider and have cheerleaders on the touchlines etc, it was all knee jerk anti American paranoia. It turned out to be one of the best world cups ever(well apart from the final)
@ToTheGallowsTree Yeah, i like Chelsea best but as a yank i like a lot of your teams as i didn't grow up with the rivalries so i like Tottenham and Everton too.
@pinegrove33 well, the experts agree that you can only properly support one club in every league. but thats not to say you can't like a few more and cheer for them, and love to watch them win and whatnot... so besides chelsea, i have soft spot for leeds, the wolves, and oldham...
Hi Pinegrove, I would've thought the high point for the USA, in soccer would've been when they beat England, in 1950, sadly though, that event did nothing to advance soccer in the USA. It was good to see them in the last world cup tho.
Forgive my ignorance, I am sure it is explained in you profile but why do you have the old, unofficial Ulster/Northern Ireland Flag draped over the wall behind you in many of your videos?
Just in case anybody takes exception to this flag let me clear: I'll fly whatever flag I want whenever I want and you can F off. I'll fight you until I'd dead. I'm glad we understand one another.
I have been a soccer fan since the 70s, but I truly believe that it should be legal to shoot any player who does a drama flop (you know, when Player B runs by within a foot of Player A, and Player A falls on the ground and grabs his leg, pretending that somebody just threw a vial of acid on him). It doesn't make me hate soccer, just soccer players.
i was taught that soccer was the only sport worth while as a child..my entire family is from europe and they believed American sports (baseball and football) were complete nonsense. that's probably why i can't identify with my fellow Americans when it comes to sports some times.
Hey Uncle Bern, it's funny-cidental that you mentioned a couple of things like Sweden in the 94 Cup as I & my cuz were at the Rose Bowl for the semi final in which Brazil defeated Sweden
I can remember the great plays in which bra-less, white T-shirted Brazilianette's were standing at the back side of the grand stands under the fine misters & exquisitely displaying their appetite whetting, "mammiferously magnificent, monumental soccer talents
ball control. Otherwise, we would have ended up as wet as they!
Once again, this time on a seat of the pants, last moments notice, we found ourselves at the Cup. This time at Germany's amazing 06 hosting. Screw the rest of the world, every Cup ought to be hosted by insanely fanatical, European countries. They go the full 9 yards & a few more in hosting the Cup. Even installing huge monitors in the middle of rivers facing both banks where the temporarily erected outdoor bars flowed the brew
& the people gathered by the hundreds of thousands for the spectacle. We attended Brazil's 1/4 final defeat by France at Frankfurt & were abducted into the Allianz Arena UFO for the semi final Portuguese loss to France in beautiful Munchen on Stuck Fisch
As we had come to expect, "magnificence" was witnessed once again at the humungous "Naked Lady" park err, excuse my Deutch, I meant the "Englischer" park with surfers on river waves??? (foreigners) Deutch is easy.... when its in Englisch!
there are no leagues here in the US to really take soccer to a high level. other countries live and breath it but we barely have any fields. Forget the mass unemployed we would be better off if a few smart people designed our technological infrastructure and the rest that slow the process down, were given a beach lounge chair.
Hell Yes on all counts. Congrats on the Lions finally winning. High Fidelity and Fever Pitch are two of the most enjoyable books I've ever read, so I can forgive Hornby for the rest. NASL did it for me, I remember seeing the Rochester Lancers playing the NY Cosmos back in the 70's, great memories.
Yes, living in Ireland for so long, I can sympathise with that 'sunday morning feeling'....and I didn't even drink when I lived there!!! I was the 'chaufer'....LOL!
well said Big Bern. to us brits football is a sacred cow. marriages have failed because of it. and quite rightly too! actually i also quite enjoy watching American football but even now i still can;t understand the bloody rules! (i put this down to senility on my part. )
I love living in sweden, It is a very exciting time to be a swede, evryone are starting to understand that the state PC programs are bullshit and I look forward to the future.
Hi Rafen, no that was 1994--post-Soviet Union. I was kidding though. I'm glad Sweden's turning it around. I realize that normal Swedes are no more to blame for Feminist political atrocities than I am for Gloria Steinem or Andrea Dworkin.
Yea I understand that you made a comment about the leadership in sweden but i felt like standing up for sweden, it is a old habit I have from my 13 years at the white guilt "school" we have. But I do feel that swedes are to blame since we voted for them.
It is like they said in south park, 25% of the population is retarded so socialism will never die in sweden, but if we unf*ck our sovjet indokrination camps that we call schools we should be abel to marginalise them, couse socialism depens on ignorans.
I have heard, about Sweden, that the majority of the population is more than happy to pay a high rate of taxation (somewhere around 40%?) and that the system actually works very well.
I think it is down to around 32-35% but yea the system is shit ofcourse, last time i needed to go to the hospital i had to wait for 7 hours a old lady in the wating room had been there for even longer. no one is happy to pay tax but people seem to have forgotten about the economic stagnation we had last time the social demokrats were in power so who knows mabye they will rule us again.
Recently I was rushed to hospital with a suspected heart-attack and I was left waiting in a room for hours, only to be told that there was nothing wrong with me. All the time I was sat around people who were suffering genuine heart-attacks.
Would this have happened in a private hospital, in which I was covered by an insurance policy; in a system in which I was free to choose who provides my future care?
