Best to keep the latch closed as to not allow enemy munitions to enter the tank. If you engage an enemy of superior intellect and wit you could end up like this tank crew.

One who wants to be able to actually SEE the enemy infantry getting near you. Soviet tanks had really crap visibility, particularly the T-34., and they lost a lot of them to this sort of thing. Eventually they started mounting little squads of infantry on the backs of the tanks to stop it.
@harlequin2262 Lotta good being able to see the enemy infantry does if you let em crawl up on your tank and drop a bomb down your hatch, right? Kinda defeats the purpose of having it open in the first place...
If you see them beforehand? The alternative is is that you DON'T see them, and they happily run up and stick a panzerknacker against your engine, or vision port, or tracks. Remember the commander's got a bunch of other stuff he has to do as well. Remember they're russians. The commander might just have been the guy that survived the last mission.
@harlequin2262 right, and thats why you dont sent tanks into combat individually without infantry support. Many times tanks would hose each other off with coaxil fire if there where infantry trying to get close. Said commander is easy target for a sniper or rifleman while riding around with his head out the hatch. A much easier target then having to run up to a tank with an AT grenade. Anyway you look at it, hatch closed is the smarter of the two options.
And yet a significant amount of Soviet tanks were killed due to Infantry action. It was clearly happening, one way or another. Lack of cooridination, fog of war, etc, I expect. Tankers live on their situational awareness. Don't have it, you're dead either way.
@harlequin2262 True. Which brings us back to why I made the first comment. Most tankers observe the enemy from a distance, but button up as they are assaulting. Vision may not be the best but they are not completely blind. and they would be rotating turrets and watching each others blind spots...no roll in driving miss daisy hatch open not paying attention.
@harlequin2262 besides even if you did spot the enemy running up on you, then what? Chances are he's shoot you, and still be able to run up and drop a AT grenade in the open turret and kill the rest of your crew before they could do anything about it.
Reverse? Alert the turret gunner. Shoot him with the cupola gun, or your service pistol? A lot of the Soviet tanks had rear-turret machine guns for just this sort of thing. Or you alert another tank in your formation to shoot him.
Any he may not have realised how close he was, or that the enemy had enough morale to mount a counter-attack.
Alternatively, his other vision options might have been damage. Periscope, optics, etc.
@harlequin2262 A machine gunners life expectancy is about 30 seconds give or take once he opens fire in those days. The turret machine guns on tanks at that time where used primarily for anti aircraft defense. Damaged optics, ect yes I could see that as a valid reason to advance unbuttoned but there is no reason to drive into combat unbuttoned if your crew is sitting in the turret. It takes what, two seconds to unbutton the hatch? Why drive into combat with it open if your not even using it?
@craigmatik Well it can work, as the tank crew has really limited sight. Also the Russians had the tendency of "throwing" their tanks against the enemy, maybe for the shock they caused. That of course is why Tanks and Infantry want to work together rather closely.

Exposed ammo, zero optical view beyond 500 meters on the 76.2 variant, half the AP of the 75 with the 76.2 and nearly half the American 76's velocity in the 85mm. Transmission problems were worsened with the gigantic 85mm turret. Disaster. Even the Sherman was much better.

@RayVal53 Actually his generals interfered TOO much - its not well known but according to notes of his personal doctor Hitler fell ill during Barbarossa and his Generals took over for a few days/weeks, apparently this was the greatest errors (David Irving spoke about docs notes). Add to this bad luck with the weather or MORE so Mussolini attacking Greece & Germany having to rescue him (postponing Barbarossa) & this was more the failing rather than "madness". He was VERY ill though.

One who wants to be able to actually SEE the enemy infantry getting near you. Soviet tanks had really crap visibility, particularly the T-34., and they lost a lot of them to this sort of thing. Eventually they started mounting little squads of infantry on the backs of the tanks to stop it.

If you see them beforehand? The alternative is is that you DON'T see them, and they happily run up and stick a panzerknacker against your engine, or vision port, or tracks. Remember the commander's got a bunch of other stuff he has to do as well. Remember they're russians. The commander might just have been the guy that survived the last mission.

@harlequin2262 right, and thats why you dont sent tanks into combat individually without infantry support. Many times tanks would hose each other off with coaxil fire if there where infantry trying to get close. Said commander is easy target for a sniper or rifleman while riding around with his head out the hatch. A much easier target then having to run up to a tank with an AT grenade. Anyway you look at it, hatch closed is the smarter of the two options.

And yet a significant amount of Soviet tanks were killed due to Infantry action. It was clearly happening, one way or another. Lack of cooridination, fog of war, etc, I expect. Tankers live on their situational awareness. Don't have it, you're dead either way.

@harlequin2262 True. Which brings us back to why I made the first comment. Most tankers observe the enemy from a distance, but button up as they are assaulting. Vision may not be the best but they are not completely blind. and they would be rotating turrets and watching each others blind spots...no roll in driving miss daisy hatch open not paying attention.

@harlequin2262 besides even if you did spot the enemy running up on you, then what? Chances are he's shoot you, and still be able to run up and drop a AT grenade in the open turret and kill the rest of your crew before they could do anything about it.

Reverse? Alert the turret gunner. Shoot him with the cupola gun, or your service pistol? A lot of the Soviet tanks had rear-turret machine guns for just this sort of thing. Or you alert another tank in your formation to shoot him.
Any he may not have realised how close he was, or that the enemy had enough morale to mount a counter-attack.
Alternatively, his other vision options might have been damage. Periscope, optics, etc.

@harlequin2262 A machine gunners life expectancy is about 30 seconds give or take once he opens fire in those days. The turret machine guns on tanks at that time where used primarily for anti aircraft defense. Damaged optics, ect yes I could see that as a valid reason to advance unbuttoned but there is no reason to drive into combat unbuttoned if your crew is sitting in the turret. It takes what, two seconds to unbutton the hatch? Why drive into combat with it open if your not even using it?

@craigmatik Well it can work, as the tank crew has really limited sight. Also the Russians had the tendency of "throwing" their tanks against the enemy, maybe for the shock they caused. That of course is why Tanks and Infantry want to work together rather closely.

@montaramike T-34 has terrible optics, and was the worst ever tank until the T-54/55 came out. Exposed ammo, zero optical view beyond 500 meters on the 76.2 variant, half the AP of the 75 with the 76.2 and nearly half the American 76's velocity in the 85mm. Transmission problems were worsened with the gigantic 85mm turret. Disaster. Even the Sherman was much better.

@RayVal53 Actually his generals interfered TOO much - its not well known but according to notes of his personal doctor Hitler fell ill during Barbarossa and his Generals took over for a few days/weeks, apparently this was the greatest errors (David Irving spoke about docs notes). Add to this bad luck with the weather or MORE so Mussolini attacking Greece & Germany having to rescue him (postponing Barbarossa) & this was more the failing rather than "madness". He was VERY ill though.

Had Hitler simply left him, at the very least, to his own devices, Germany would likely still have lost, however, the amount of destruction it endured would have been different.

And when it comes to Himmler, he assigned him with the Holocaust and the actions of the SS. Himmler only took part at the Whermacht's meetings with Hitler, but didn't have much to say as he couldn't even hold a gun right. And Hitler realised way before Rommel and Guderian that the war was lost, in 1943. The genera;s still thought they could win.

Even in the final days of the Reich a delusional Hitler was ordering his generals to muster up non-existent armies and even held an "awards ceremony" for Hitler youth, believing to the bitter end Germany would prevail. In 1944 it was King Michael who's german, by the way, who turned us against Germany by getting stubborn and removing Antonescu and throwing him into the jail. Then the communit party fooled him to give them Antonescu. They also contacted Moscow which assigned them to take charge of Romania after the war. Nonsense! The tank also goes to attack with the battened down hatches (read the Charter) is time. The tank in attack without infantry goes on full speed are two. Т-34 on video in the present state of affairs could go from 50 km/h and above, "gallant German" the asshole not only wouldn't catch up, and and even at a jump on the reservation wouldn't be kept are three. Брехня! Танк и идет в атаку с задраенными люками(сморти Устав) - это раз. Танк в атаке без сопровождения пехоты вваливает на всю катушку - это два. Т-34 на видео в данной ситуации мог идти от 50 км/ч и выше, "бравый германский" засранец не только бы не догнал, а и даже при прыжке на броню не удержался бы - это три. Достаточно, или продолжить специально для тех у кого данная муть вызывает щенячий восторг?
