Wasn't the Romulan commander a security officer on the Enterprise during the first season? She died while teleporting and Jordy was haunted by her for a time.
What Hobson did was just one inch from mutiny. I understand that he's a junior officer, but what he did was so far over the line that I don't see how it could be kept out of his service record.
@snaplesugar Though he doesnt feel emotion, Data CAN emulate it. Data through his own experiences (26 yrs in Starfleet) knows how to emulate and detect emotion. He also knows Humans respond well to emotion.
He knows that even Picard would have gotten pissed at the situation. So Data emulated the emotion needed to make Hobson comply with his orders.
Like Spock, he is an observer of Human emotion, and understands it more than humans themselves most likely.
@scvengeance I can understand Hobsons reluctance. Data and Hobson are of equal rank. It is a breach of military etiquette to send a officer of the same rank as one avalible to another ship.
@BrommaHerman — you're forgetting the issue of seniority. Data's commission predates Hobson's, making him the superior officer by dint of his being senior-in-grade. In any case, the appointment was by the order of the Fleet Captain —Picard— and Hobson was obligated to keep his fool mouth shut and obey the orders of his captain. Military etiquette can be and has been overridden when the situation demanded it. Data's seniority renders that whole issue moot, though.
no see one thing ive learned from TNG is how sometimes when im boiling with anger at situations and want to take rash decisions..in the end it is the wrong thing to do...always try to reason with the person you're in conflict with and do it with patience.
Hobson spends 3/4 of this episode acting out of borderline insubordination, then when things get hot, he goes to full-on gross insubordination. This should pretty much end his career.
@Maupin001 Data understands that it would be difficult for someone unfamiliar with him to treat him like a person and not a machine, but I bet he made a note to Picard or Starfleet about the guy's behavior.
that officer should know data would NOT be wearing a uniform if he was not worthy. a captain can take command of another starship say in time of war . with the prefix code . theres no time for a working relationship. that officer is just being a androidist turd
This is a fun compilation! Thanks for posting. Of course, it works best within the pacing of the complete episode... One of Data's finest moments, no doubt. Also one of the highlights of the Redemption two-parter.
Incidentally, among the lowest is the whole 'Tasha's daughter' story arc. I used to think it was cool, but I've come around on that. It was tolerable in Redemption, but went nowhere afterward. Sela was bland, two-dimesional, and poorly handled beyond this episde.
@sajakram1 because Data probably analyzed a human crew of a different ship would not take to kindly to following orders of an android captain and needed to establish a working relationship with the human first officer.
@NuclearFist it why a doctor who ep, when there was a Sontaran medic. They are mostly like a warrior race, so i thing i to would love to see a Klingon counselor.
@KunKun85 Granted. He had preconceptions about androids. But otherwise he raised valid concerns about Data's orders, and despite that, he followed them. He even acknowledged that he was wrong.
He's by no means a hero from what we've seen, but I don't think he's derserving of death.
@Calriec He's not worthy of the brig or demotion. Four dozen with the lash on the observation deck would have straighted him out. Flogging, according to several of the books is still a technically legal Starfleet punishment though almost never used due to it being more expedient to simply reprimand, stunt and/or outright end careers to the point of outright discharge or halting advancement to the point they want to leave.
Unfortunately, friend, where humans are and will be, their qualities and shortcomings will follow. Sadly not everyone in this world has the desire to improve themselves.
@ZeroPermission I'm still on the fence as to whether his reasoning could be called "racism." In a cold hard light, racism is simply the belief that one person is "superior" to another due to their race. But, obviously, this is specious because "better" is hardly defined. I think that the point that the officer was making is that in this specific context that an android would perform "inferior" to a human captain. In conclusion, yes, a klingon might perform less empathetic.
@FERViolin2010 That's just a reflection from the light. If you look closely you can see it's a darker colour than the other two, and the same thing happens to Hobson's pips.
Wasn't the Romulan commander a security officer on the Enterprise during the first season? She died while teleporting and Jordy was haunted by her for a time.
