A voice of rare refinement and artistic sensibility. One of my favorite sopranos. In this role, she was matchless. She was also the perfect Juliet to Jussi Björling's Romeo, as the Feb. 1, 1947 live recording from the Met will attest. Her voice had a timeless, ethereal quality that will live forever among lovers of great singing.
She, like that other great proponent of French singing Maggie Teyte, studied with Hahn and Debussy (I believe). But she also studied with one of the Reszkés.
When I poo-poo today's "singers", I am accused of having a distorted view of what singing is or can be because apparently I have been unduly influenced by studio recordings and all the editing, splicing and electronic alterations that can be done. Then I listen to live recordings like this one, and I laugh. And then I cry.
She studied with Jean De Rezske in Nice, but before that she had a teacher in Rio called Elena Teodorini, who was a dramatic soprano of Rumanian origin. I was never told she studied with Hahn. Perhaps she only worked with him.
I never heard this live performance from Sayao's Met debut, and did not even realize it existed. What a rare treat! A delicate, beautiful tone and refined technique. My favorite Manon.
Fortunately there is and it's in good sound. she was the most perfect Manon, indeed: not too coquettish, not too deep; not too light, but not too heavy. Just the right measure for the role.
It is always good to remember she had been sung for 11 years in Europe with success, singing in Rome, Paris, Milan etc. I hope there were a recording of her Lakmè or Amina from those years, I bet she was unforgettable ...
