The throttle is wide open and you lose all vacuum to the power brakes, holy shit that also happens when you turn the key off, damn I'm right for 1. Car manufactures also eliminate power steering assist at high speeds, why? Because you don't make tight turning maneuvers at speed and you don't need any to make a lane change because you only move the steering wheel a couple degrees.

Many of these models don't have a key to start. They have a push button. In order to shut them off you have to hold the button in for a few seconds which is near impossible while in the panic mode!

@truehunter There is a mechanical element to steering systems. Its called "rack and pinion" because that is what the gears are inside if that magical aluminum box that makes it work. The hydraulics are there for the power assist but I'm not sure that Toyota uses hydraulics for their power steering it could be electric power assist. in any event there is always a mechanical link from the steering wheel to the front wheels. Turn the key to the on position on your dads car and turn the wheels.
